Don't think front tire wear was a problem by race end since it spent 1/2 the race in the AIR! This was back when the better Rider won races not won by the Computer Programmer who's sitting on his a.ss in the pits during the race.
I was there and that day sold me on motorcycle road racing forever; I've never forgotten how thrilling it was and I still get excited when thinking about it.
turn the tables...if stoner rode for ducati and rossi with honda....who would win? Ducati get your act together dammit....It is destiny that rossi wins a championship and ends his career on a italian made ducati.....
This is the old "horsepower" layout for Laguna. The added section after turn was for GP compliance, the track wasn't long enough. I think most riders preferred the old layout that road both.
First time I went there in the 70s, we parked about 200 yards from the track. Now it's a zoo.
you know, even to this very day, any time roberts gets a chance to call randy momola crazy during an internview, he does. indy dirt track mile interview, he somehow fit in "crazy like momola" into the interview
@tonupharry Well, Stacey Moaner, with that ugly Duc, was able to stay with Vale with the way superior Yamaha, at Laguna Seca 2008... And poor loser Rossi, now with the same bike, with much more development, is only a mediocre normal rider... Rossi=OVERRATED, Moaner=PURE TALENT...
@MrAlucard222 Dude, Stoner was expected to win that race by a wide margin. He had the superior bike which is why Rossi had to fight so hard to get back in front immediately after Stoner passed him.Had he not been able to do that Stoner would have gapped him quickly. Had it been a wider track with more places to pass Stoner would have walked away with it but since it was a tight track he had to have to skill to get by and then stay in front of Rossi, which he couldn't do.
@ElitePower Ducati 2008 is not a superior bike than the Yamaha 2008... And i think that Rossi hide himself a bit in the free practice in 2008... Remeber that Casey always say that his Ducati is a bike with only a trajectory, in almost every circuit, and is very difficult to engage a melee with that Duc, especially with the most agile bike, the Yamaha... Look at Rossi at the corkscrew in Laguna 2011, he looked like a beginner compared to Stoner and the other top riders, guilt of the ugly Duc...
King Kenny is my personal inspiration, a Man and Machine in almost perfect syncronicity and doesnt need a turbo, those bikes are tought to ride and they take that corkscrew like nothing... MAJOR BRASS BALLS on that era...all hail the kings, I include Mike the bike but he was from different era and engine type
I produced this show for Seals Communications/ESPN. I believe you Japanese re-packagers are guilty of copyright infringement. Audio was completely re-edited from a different show. There is no way they could use the real natural sound because it was mixed with the narration track.
@JestTjube It is called a light switch powerband & in very high performance 2 stroke engines that is before they started designing the big bang engines the power band was either on or off & when it is on all you can do is try & get your weight over the front wheel because all it wants to do is flip over. I have ridden many bikes like this, although never a GP500, but I have ridden a RS250 & RS125 both GP bikes as well as many hopped up 2 strokes in my racing days. Kenny even says it is too fast.
@jeffuryca i hate that they switched to moto gp/ 4 strokes, its coll, but nothing like a 500, and if you remember in the late 70s they were actually running a tz 750 3 cylinder, also the kawi triple, which was modified by erv kanemoto to be liquid cooled, to bad they dont have any videos about erv on ytube
first went to see Roberts at Laguna in 1980 , more pleasant setting than today, more dusty fields over to the corkscrew. Moved closer to Monterey finally went last year
much more modern and more turns added of course. doesnt sem so long ago we left Santa Barbara with about 20 of us riding up the coast on our ducati's to sleep out under the stars in tents to watch the races. Things were so different then, who knew or wanted a Ducati then
incredible!!!! this is the old layout before all the turns in the infield were added, these guys would literally wheelie the WHOLE section after the first turn! and this is kinda light, i saw a race where baldwin and mamola just swapped positions on 1 wheel for the entire race! oh the glory days indeed
nice race -I was 24 and owned then an RZ 500 N - I bought the same Dainese leathers as the king and was in love with that bike - I still have it on my Garage - only a few can understand ....
WOW! aren't those 2 strokes. They were getting mad power from those Strokers. Kenny even said that the bike is much faster than he can ride it. Scary.
Wow wheelie heaven
