Sovereignty will never happen. What about the billions of dollars in existing infrastructure, are you going to give it back? How you guys going to protect yourselves if n.korea decides to invade? Locals don’t even take care of the land, almost every day I see someone with a sovereignty sticker on their truck fly beer or cigarettes out in the bushes.
@brodell20. If I may say, why would North Korea or any other country invade Hawaii? What would be the point? No matter which one, its still the same as America did. And America was just as bad. And in North Korea's specific case, why would they waste all that time and money to travel 5000 miles accros the Pacifc to go invade a peaceful country when they could've invaded South Korea?
@TheMoncibaiz A lot of people have thought of it. But saying "If America hadn't taken over Hawai`i some other power would have," is like the rapist saying to his victim, "If I hadn't raped you, someone else would have." It's still no excuse.
@koanifoundation i agree, but i just don't understand that how is hawaii to be its own again, what will happen? will the u.s. stop any country from trying to take the land? i just feel that it's sad that from outside eyes, that it cannot go back to the way it once was.
the bottom line is self-determination: people living in hawaii voted for statehood. it was done through a democratic process. if they have another vote today, and if the vote is for independence, then through a process of self-determination they should get their sovereignty ... i just think it's dishonest to say you speak for most hawaiians.
@BoricuaChiTown Aloha, I can understand your point of view, it is incorrect however,if one asks a few questions about the timing and particulars of the "Statehood" vote. Why 1959? Who got to vote? What were the choices on the ballot? Simply put, the US wanted to push statehood through because the post WWII cold war nations were becoming free from colonization. You had to live in Hawai'i one year and many who did vote had migrated here from the States. As to choices: Independence? No Other No!
No they declared sovereignty. So we have 49 states now. The entire State. Dividing ourselves up by race I see. Separatism? Why am I subject to US laws but not them? No taxes? Everybody's a damn victim. First the Native Americans, then the Jews, now Hawaii. Why are we giving them a tax break for a tragedy that no one alive today was a "victim" of? I am sick of America hating liberals rewriting history. Nobody is a victim that is nonsence. Shit happens. Get over it. Another entitlement program.
@ToxicOdiousOne everybody hates america except americans now drink that up along with your other toxins and swallow. rewriting history? ahahahaha u americans covered your mass amount of sin & wrote lies down then called that actual history its pure ego feeding propaganda so u could look like saviors & heros to the world, instead of the scum sucking, lie telling, baby killing, land stealing murdering fucks u r. BULLSHIT! perfect example of u.s. lies IRAQ!! now get over that cause's its the truth
Use to be called the Sandwich Islands many moons ago. I wish the Hawaiian Islands were independant and not part of the US. I love Hawaii, one of my favourite places to visit. Just got back from O'ahu 3 days ago. Free Hawaii!!!!
If Hawaiian natives are overwhelmingly in support of independence, then I say give it to them. Now, since you're a Canadian, I'll also say lets give the Quebecois the independence that they've been clamoring for.
Hawaiianstile...U R totally right. America does so much fucked up shit, they start making up lies and then believing them. The media coupled with republicans who have Bush so far up theirs asses, believing and even reporting false happenings to the general public is why America is screwed up.
What are they gonna say next,Bush didnt have anything to do with 9/11 tragedies? America was built on lies and the slaughter of native people. Thats how they roll.
As with any subject that is new to its hearers, there is some catching up to the deeper particulars. In other words it is impossible to go to great depths about the Illegal Occupation of Hawai'i in 2.46 minutes to everyone's satisfaction. But, is it true in its import and assessment? I for one agree, as a Kanaka Hawai'i of British descent....the Statehood vote under International Law is baseless. It's like the Germans WW2 voting to make France a part of the DR after a continued occupation.
99% of that this man is true, however after 100 + years it cannot be undone. Today the majority of people are part Polynesian and part something else. I doubt the monarchy could have survived. and Hawaii today would look like The Phillippines.
This was some deep stuff about Hawaii! I know when I read about the overthrow of Queen Leleukalani by the U.S. I was mad because it was just another example in history of humanity using force to kill itself: in this case the U.S. wanted to expand it's territory (again) and overthrew Hawaii's queen. As if it wasn't enough what they did to the natives during westward expansion. Sad!
i always find it interesting how the US likes to fabricate history. omitting many things and skewing the truth so they appear to be just. a teacher of mine who was a Cherokee pointed out to me that they refer to many of their raids on his peoples unprepared peaceful villages as "battles" and when his people got together and won a battle it was writing into US history as "massacre" and here again 'Ehu shows the truth a US history book isn't likely to tell you.
I'm a mainland ha'ole but feel native 'cause I've been there so much & for so long. I agree with the sovereignty movement 100%. White people-starting with Captain Cook and then the missionaries-screwed up ALL of the Polynesian cultures. Too bad they didn't ALL get eaten before they destroyed heiaus & everything else about this spiritual place. That's like a foreign nation invading the U.S. and then saying that we have to worship rocks or go to hell for being heathens. My sincerest apologies.
US are friccin bullies!! I cry almost daily about what is going on back home(i live in the mainland) but if the US didn't take over...someone else would have. What if it were Russia or China? Hawai'i could not have defended itself. At least we are part of the greatest nation. Are free and not communist. So I don't think Hawai'i should be freed. But I do thimk that anyone who has hawaiian blood needs to rise up so that at least we run our own aina. Everyone with the bloodline should be given aina
Sorry, that's a very poor excuse. Someone else would have? That's like a child molester telling the judge, "If I didn't rape that girl, someone else would have." Still doesn't make it right, does it? No one else would have taken over Hawaii because at that time, we remained a NEUTRAL Nation. All the other nations of the time respected Hawaii and her independence.
I see where you're coming from, but the two scenarios aren't the same. Sure Hawaii was neutral, but We are in the middle of the pacific ocean, and as such, make a very strategic spot, so we wouldn't have been left alone. If America hadn't come in, someone else would have, regardless of whether they respected the Hawaiian ways or not, war is war and people generally don't care who's toes they step on because it's all for the greater good.
simply not true. america was the only one who would have done it. taking us over was in breach of international law set fourth by the UN, only 2 nations broke that law and as such only those 2 nations would have taken over. one was france the other america, france wouldn't have done it because they were too busy fucking over Tahit. if america didn't break international law and treaties with us and indeed steel Hawai'i in an act of war nobody would have.
Actually no. We probably would've been a British Colony. If you know some History of Hawai`i you would know that we were influenced by the British. Also we have the British Union Jack in our state flag.
no because we had treaties with over 20 countries INCLUDING the US! so to answer your other question you steal it by violating treaties and forcing a queen to sign her country over by force.
OK really.....um yes hawaii was stolen, BUT first by the french, then the British, THEN U.S You really want to be free now? Now that Hawaiians are practically breeded out by the haoles? My mom is hawaiian and from Makaha side...wainea to be exact..she always said that hawaiians be takin over by SOMEBODy...so dont you think we should just move on...need to work on hawaiian homelessness first b4 the soverignty....
That's just it. We can't take care of any of our problems until we fix the biggest one! There's homeless now because of american system of government. In the old days, Hawaiians took care of everyone. There was no homeless. Everybody still lived together in big ohanas working together for the benefit of everyone, not the american way of looking after yourself and screw everyone else. auwe!
The U.S. Marines may of had occupied the area but just because you decide to live some where does not mean that you are able to over throw that area. Technically you can not overthrow a government that is already there. That indeed is illegal but, in those days who was to say what is illegal and what isn't because everyone has different rules. So much people around the world dislikes like the U.S. because our government thinks that everyone else around the world should be runed the same.
"Now to avoid any collision of armed forces, and perhaps the loss of life, I do this under protest and impelled by said force yield my authority until such time as the Government of the United States shall, upon facts being presented to it, undo the action of its representatives and reinstate me in the authority which I claim as the Constitutional Sovereign of the Hawaiian Islands." Queen Liliuokalani, Jan 17, 1893
That is a very important legal statement. The Queen did not yield her throne unconditionally to the provisional govt. She yielded her throne to the US because of superior military force until it would undo the actions of its representatives.
@Pinkerton1 If they took it illegally I don't see why any of their representatives would give it back. Even if one of them were righteous enough to try, the rest would be against it. One day the tables will be turned and the minority will be viewed as the true righteous people that we are. God bless my Queen.
