  • And the,Indiana Jones arrives and take out his gun

  • 0:55 priceless

  • I am interested are you imagining opponents when you do these performances or are you just "dancing"?

  • @chemclimber Thats a valid question and I would assume that you come from a traditional background. This is an example of an open style weapons form that has been very successful in competition including at the world championship level. There are forms out there that are even more free style compared to this one as they involved gymnastics and more twirling of the bo. These are known as extreme forms. Both open and extreme forms are not well accepted by the purists but they are here to stay.

  • @clintleung Thank you for replying to me. I did gymnastics for over 10years and can appreciate the intricacies of your movements and the skill required! My question was more to work out what's going through your mind whilst you are performing. Since I started martial arts (about 2 years ago) and doing kata/paired kata I've not yet developed the state of mind where I can think less about "this foot there, this hand there" and just "do" as I did in gymnastics. Good luck with your training

  • @chemclimber Believe it or not, each move, at least in my forms even though they are considered open forms, have an application. And if you see where my head is turned, it is an imaginary battle. The judges do look for these things. I've competed since 1985 and just retired a few years ago with a very long track record so I can certainly defend the validity of open free style forms. If you go to the largest tournaments in NA, you will see both traditional and open (plus extreme) forms

  • @clintleung Very interesting, what made you decide to move away from traditional forms and compete in open tournaments? Also how do the "traditionalists" fair in these mixed tournaments?

  • @chemclimber I just like performing and watching open forms more. I can structure the forms to fit my body. The traditionalists do very poorly if in an open division so what has evolved for many years now is that big tournaments will have separate divisions for traditional, open and extreme. This makes things more fair.

  • is it a jo staff

  • i like this video a lot! very impressive speed! but the music... I felt like i was watching JAWS XD

  • @Ihatetechnomusic that's why i like the music a lot :DDD

  • u should change the title because bo means staff in chinese so really your saying staff staff

  • salut super :)

  • THIS IS NOT KARATE!!!

    IS THAT CLEAR!!!??

  • KARATE = Empty Hands ?!

  • @andrezancanaro thats true karate does meen empty hand but karate has four main types of wepons the numchucks the two small bo's i dont no what there called sorry the bo and sai's.........=]]]]]

  • What sort of staff is that, noway its a proper bo staff. looks a lot lighter lol.

  • @Ghost572 Of course it is a lot lighter. It was custom made for me especially for forms competition.

  • this bo staff is made from oak,and was designed to be light

  • @Ghost572 Its a perforance Bo staff get a life! You dont know butt from karate and ballet

  • @vRsBaBy I would caution folks here, especially if they are real martial artists, to show respect. Otherwise, comments are removed.

  • That just makes my Bo Kata look like crud in a cup.

  • good video but terrible music lol

  • everybody was kung fu fighting..para para pa pa paaa!!!!!

  • lol, I would love to get in a match with this person :) It would be fun. And when I got my butt kicked a few times, I could learn from it.

  • soooooo cool!

  • lol jaws music?

  • @ciccarello LOL!

  • hehehe...yep. jaws.

  • I'v always loved staff's over any other weapon for some reason, this style seems really cool. Going to watch more videos on it. Would love to try it some day :P

  • me too! :D

  • good choice in weopon becaus most improvised weopons are either staff or club like wopons

  • great video, nice form :) do you do instructional videos? i was learning bo but my instructor moved countries. thanks

  • Thanks but not teaching at present

  • do you have any advice or know anywhere i can learn? thanks for your time

  • You can learn all the basic form from youtube. that what i've been doing and its good.

  • That's true to a great extent but if you want to win in competition, you will need feedback.

  • Mad skill, but that tiny little thing hardly qualifies as a bo.

  • lol is that the jaws theme?

  • no, similar tho

  • Great form and good job. The music really sucks though.

  • well handled but please audio swap thats the most annoying noise i heard ever

  • thats pretty amazing

  • cool :)

  • good job!

  • i watched again. I like the form. speed is good. that staff must be pretty damn light.

I have worked with staff for ... mmmm... 17 years now with a variety of weights. Lately, I have worked with solid oak so on the heavy end. I play to get my speed from technique as opposed to mere strength.

It funny, recently i picked up an older lighter staff and it was difficult to keep up with the speed, nearly flew out of my hands.

I should make one of these videos someday.

    Good job.

  • Thanks. My updated form is much better. It's just that it's too cold outside up here in Canada to video it now. So I would have to wait until spring. I'll of course change the music since there's been so much flak about it. But it won't be until spring before I can get a new one up.

  • nice technique, rhythm. I wonder though, what is the weight of your staff?

  • Light, custom made for me but not nearly as light as the graphite ones these days. I'm going to work on a new form for 2009 and shoot it sometime in the spring.

  • good. karate rocks but change the fucken shitty music! CHANGE DA THE MusCUS MUSIC

  • great job but as everyone else has said, worst song u could possably pick

  • Great job...change the music though.

  • Jaws: The Kung-Fu Shark

  • Wow. Amazing. Except....change the music, its too repetitive and gets annoying

  • rly nice if u have ne advice for me on my videos id appreciate it...

    u look very talented

  • where u get ur bo from??

  • It was custom made. Unfortunately, the maker is no longer with us.

  • Very talented!! I agree with the prior comments: that dreadful music must go.

  • DUDE U R FAST

but the music, fucking hell. change tht shit

  • Nicely done, hated the music tho

  • Funny but I don't consider myself all that fast. But I do train with different weights of bos.

  • That is beautiful, what did you use to practice?

  • Bo staffs of varying weights

  • I wish I could learn from you.

  • Like in the Matrix: Reloaded

  • ..Jaws music?

  • that was pretty tight.

but yeah, the music needs to go.

there are tons of better selections.

    xD

    -izz0-

  • ha i can esily do that, and trust me im not just saying this

  • Well, good for you. Isn't it refreshing to know that there are some people out there with so much humility and respect? Not!!

  • that's not karate.

    kara = empty

    te = hand

    karatekas don't use weapons

    great video nonetheless

  • it may be with a bo staff but in karate you can take optional courses to train with weapons, bo staff, nunchaku etc.

  • hmmmmm, it is karate man, it's not because it's empty hand that you will start fighting people with weapons with your fist! The 3 traditionnal karate weapons are the bo staff, the nunchaku and the Sai, some even have katanas! just depends of the style you are practicing

  • haha.....i agree with fluffywin...the vid was kool...but the song made me feel a little...uh...well.....paranoid

  • amazing staff form man! :)

  • wow ur great but the music is sorta freaking me out sorry im not trying to be mean im just saying the music is scary

  • Cool I like it, I'm doing some freestyle bo staff stuff, however it's self trained, so only do basic strikes. However, slowly getting better. Step, by step. :)

  • :40 Best Twirling Dance move ever, lol

  • im training to be able to use a bo staff i can do a few of those thing as fast as he did but takes alot of practice do all that as fast and with no screw ups like he did so im very impressed.

  • wow maybe he sould have painted the bo orange or something. i could barley see it as it was because he is so fast

  • I sprayed mine with glow-in-the-dark paint spray, and did what he did in the dark. It looks really cool.

  • lol love ur vid 5/5!! i turned off the music and listen to something else when i was watching this lolzzz

  • Wow ur alot better than me! how long have you been practicing I have been doing it for around 3 years, we r done with basic stuff but now we r learning the 42 blocks and strikes

  • Thanks. I've been doing martial arts for over 35 years. I'm nowhere as fancy as most of the younger bo competitors but that's okay since I compete in the senior age divisions.

  • the music sounds like its from JAWS lol like the shark is about to eat the guy any minute kik

  • He could take a shark ANY day.

  • This is more Chinese to me, not Okinawan or Japanese.. Anyway impresive :)

  • Yes, there are certainly Chinese influences in the form. Still gets away with being in hard style weapons divisions though.

  • that was awesome... odd music though

  • LOOSE THE MUSIC!!! Other than that, good job.

  • nice moves, but the song is really getting on my nerves !

  • Looks more like wu shu than karate, but a damned impressive performance none the less, I'm glad I got to see it. What was with the music, though? :s It sounded like something out of a bad 80s slasher flick, sorry to be negative about it. Something more upbeat or something would feel more appropriate, but that music made me feel very uncomfortable. Still, you got a favourites and a subscriber as a result ;)

  • what form of martial arts is that? i train in the bostaff in taekwondo. is that some advanced bostaff form?

  • It's a contemporary open staff form with elements of both Japanese and Chinese styles.

  • awesome, that was great.

  • very cool love the rode think it is amazing 5 stars and in favorties

  • He's awsome!!! I'm trying tp learn XMA, or I haven't started my training, but I'm working hard with my body!! It's so cool!!

  • is this the jaws theme? NYAHAHA j.k. xD

    he's gooodd o.o

  • i really like to watch chris mark and emerson wongs of team ryouko but ur right they really only do tricks and learned katas if they were in a real fight i despute that they would be as good as shown in the vids

  • pretty good

  • he is very skilled, but how the fuck can i watch with concentration whit hat music hahahahahaha, you loved bad suspense movies??

  • "those wushu guys, in their pijamas... you know, they kick you in a head and still spin twice before landing.." FUCKING AMAZING!

  • not 2 be a ass or any thing stances need lil work other than thats awsome job man ^^

  • WHAT A NOOB! I'm joking of course. This was incredible- that's years of training mentally and physically, practicing solo and with a mentor...years. A comment on youtube doesn't matter but I feel that he was excellent. You can say 'keep up the good work' to an amateur, but to a professional, all there is to say is 'amazing' and 'I hope you don't mistake me for the person that just stole your pocketwatch.'

  • nice vid but the music sucks...

  • one of the fastest

  • some movement same as in Wushu Staff routine...

  • i found the bo staff to be really easy...

  • You must not have as exacting a sensei as I do!

  • arts can be karate and still use weapons. it is just that the focus is on unarmed. my style has one kat for the sword, staff, and cane, but it is still karate.

  • Kara means empty, te means fist. There are weapons forms in every culture, but in Japanese, the word used is kobudo, and even Japanese kobudo is different from Okinawan kobudo, since Okinawa didn't historically have swords.

  • my style calls them Kata..whether armed or unarmed.

  • "Kata" is Japanese for "mold" (as in jello mold, not a fungus) and has no connection to any one style. Kata are composed of hojo-undo, the primary moves, so both terms are used in every style - there's even a make-believe "gun kata" in the movie Equilibrium!

  • gun kata is only a movie thing. just cuz they use the word doesnt mean anything. hoolywood soes that. my art is a japanese art. the masters came here from a war and ended up in Hawaii. thanks for trying to correct me yet again. my style calls it a kata so it is a kata. chill

  • My art is Okinawan - both karate and kobudo were introduced to Japan from there in the early 1900's.

  • Goju ryu right. lol yupp id do that to but i much preffer XMA.

  • Kata does not mean mould

  • Japanese words have numerous definitions, based on their use; here's a list from a translation site:

    kata lagoon

    kata many, plentiful

    kata shoulder

kata mold, model, style, shape, data-type

    kata excess, superabundance

    kata person

  • I dont use a dictionary for these. The use of the word Kata to mean mould/mold, is he same word as igata. A Japanese sensei would not admit to encouraging igata.

freedict, which you used to make this list, is very literal, just words, like ball, ball and ball, they all have different meanings, but only one is right at one time. Kata in Budo is not a mould.

  • I only repeat what Shihan Nishiuchi has taught, and since I *know* he has spent his entire life in martial arts, and is a native speaker of Japanese, his definition stands. He has never spoken the word igata. Stop arguing about *my* definition and offer your own - even the work budo can be defined in several ways, including "the way to stop fighting". Also, he may be Japanese, but this example of what he teaches is Okinawan martial arts (he also teaches iaido)

  • I'll tell Tatsuo Suzuki his use of the word Igata is superfluous, because Nishiuchi never uses it. If Kata was a mould, we would all do kata exactly the same, desirable in the realm of technique; shushi/ no kon sho being an example of different interpretations. Nobody could apply the six principles of kata, as 4th & 6th are greatly affected by the stature of the exponent. Nishiuchi's use of a metaphor doesn't make me wrong. Budo is not "defined" that way, ever, put it in freedict, that won,t fly.

  • How do *you* define kata in English terms? The kanji for budo also has the kanji for "stop" inside of it, thus the interpretation, but not something a English (or even British) dictionary would list.

  • deciphering kanji is not the same as defining an english word. Ku No Ichi and onna for example, great case in point. And the kanji is "to stop a spear"

I define kata as a whole state of mind/body/experience, kata is rarely practiced by the majority of martial artists. I became a champion by embodying Ikita Kata and Inen, people believe my kata to be real. Is Nishiuchi Sensei your direct teacher?

  • He fills in for Shihan Bolz when she is away.

  • makes no sense karate means non armed

  • was just about to say that... and bo staff is a martial art of it's own, called bo-jutsu

  • That was amazing, you obviously have great control. Your practices really shows in this kata.

  • pretty good I like to keep moving threw my target do you train with a heavy staff or with the pencil staffs

  • I train with both but I am still improving. I'm planning to shoot my new form soon on video and replace this one.

  • its good to see people still love doing this

  • I do, too, but I only started 2 years ago and I have never been in very good shape, so I don't move very fast! We occasionally do one-handed spinning during warmups, but not in any kata or hojo-undo -- we'd get corrected if we were demonstrating reversing our grip and had the bo in only one hand for more than a fraction of a second. The only time we don't hold the bo in thirds is for big swings like the one towards the end of shushi no kon. Shihan is a true traditionalist!

  • sort the music out. But yeah, pretty darn good!

  • Where do you live in Canada? I have a firend who lives up there and has practiced Wushu for 17 years. You might know him. And what is the form called?

  • lol. damn i spelled Kobudo wrong. Correction its Kobudo not Kobo Do.

  • It's an open bo form with some Chinese wushu influence but it has been reworked over the winter. I'm just waiting for the snow to finally disappear up here in Canada before I reshoot the video.

  • Very nice clint. Love the form. I do Shorin-Ryu Karate and love the Bo Staff. I do Kobo Do as well (nunchuka, Escrima, Bo, Tonfa, Sai) I specializa in Sai and the Katana. What is the form called? I would love to learn it! MA 4 LIFE!!!

  • 35 years! how old are you 40+?

  • Yes, I am 40+ -- in fact the NASKA title I won two years ago was 40-50 yr mens forms.

  • i never knew the bo staff was from Karate... i do karate at the moment, im doing my first grading next month... nice vid!

  • Clint, ignore these guys who say you can only perform for show and its not practical. You have talent, which is rare, and people are jealous =)

  • Thank you. The other thing is that I've been doing martial arts for about 35 years so I think I should be able to train the way I want ;)

  • Agreed, you should post up a vid of you doing a sweet ass practical weapons set. word?

  • the bo staff is highly practical, in the ancients, when enemies fired arrows at you, a bo staff could be used (and has been used) to spin around fast enough so that no arrows hit you, then you go kick their ass when they try to reload and pull back a heavy string weighted long bow

  • seems you're trained it tournament more than anything else. not to say that you can't do a form more practical that would actually work. Spinning a staff around changes a whole lot when you make contact on your target or against another weapon/sheild.

  • That's true. But then again, one of the things I love about martial arts is that there's stuff I can do for show or at tournaments and there's stuff that I do for practical self defense. For me, doing a range of activity keeps martial arts interesting.

  • yea my form is the same way... every form is like tht you have strikes tht r intended to hit a real person but then u will go into kibarachi or a horsestance and in a real fight you would never do tht but XMA has taken all this to a new level where now u can put aerials, flips, jackknifes into ur form...sometimes it looks good but mostly its flashy and poorly done and judges sometimes go for tht which really piss me and others off but i liked ur form nonetheless very strong

    CJE

  • One thing I've always wondered is...how much of that is really effective/efficient for real combat (say staff on staff or sword, etc, -no guns :) and how much is mostly theatrical or, I guess, for intimidation? Because it seems like the behind the back stuff and the body spins and such would just be a good time to get a jab in. Is there much weapons sparing done with this?

  • I'll be the first to say that some of the moves are indeed for the sake of art rather than combat. But I feel that it's okay since it makes things fun and interesting to watch as well as do. Of course, if I was to use a bo for self defense, I would only stick to practical techniques. But I enjoy the art aspect of martial arts too. Nothing wrong with that in my opinion.

    Clint

  • it can easily break bones and do severe damage if used in the right ways... it is one of the most powerful blunt weapons from the past

  • i would kill to be able to do moves like that. i do some self training but i really wouldnt go as far to say that i am really good. i want to learn how to do stuff like that. another problem is that all i have is a broom stick shorter that me that i can use. feels a little wierd. Very nice video.

  • I swear those ain't japanese bo movements- wot Karate style u train then?

  • There are a few traditional Japanese moves, some Chinese wushu staff moves and some modern open style moves. It's the combined style that I prefer now.

  • This bo form is mainly an open hard style form with definite Chinese soft style wushu influence. I can use such a form only in divisions that allow open forms rather than traditional.

  • Which art are you "doing", cause I see you release one of your arms. Great moves btw.

  • cool =] you should watch Chris marka nd his Bo..he is pretty super awsome

  • one thing, it sounds like a shark bite is about to happen other wise good job.

  • Very well done!

  • one recommendation get a darker colored staff i can barely see it

  • The staff is already very dark brown. A new video probably in the spring will have me closer up and there could be a possibility of using one of those shiney bo staffs. We'll see if it makes any differences.

  • you can barely see it because he moves so fast! lol. nice job.

  • Teach me oh gr8 one!

  • I'm not worthy. Actually, I'm going to reshoot this video as I can do a better job now that there's been some slight modifications.

    Clint

  • great moves:D
