lots of cats were doing double bass in the early 70s. Want proof, check out Nick Mason (Pink Floyd) in 72 on the Live at Pompeii video. Plus I doubt Mason was the very first one to do double bass, he just came to mind first. Not sure whern Bill Ward switched to double bass, but for metal shouldn't Bill Ward be? California Jam 74, you see him with double bass. Any examples from the 60s?
