There are plenty of soft-roaders mixing it with Cruisers, 4Runners, whatever.
I've seen a Subaru Outback go past a 70 Cruiser stuck in sand.
A good car in the hands of an average (learning) driver is still an average car, though an average car in the hands of a good (experienced) driver is a good car.
Funny you say that, I'm selling my 100 series Landcruiser for an Outback. Not for the 4x4 performance, just the practicality.

get a real 4x4 like a land cruiser or patrol
