ik moet dit nu kijken voor Engels, maar hier in het computerlokaal van onze school is er geen geluid. Het is dus best wel saai. De spatiebalk doet het trouwens ook erg slecht.
My youngest is just 2 years old, but the affectionate & nurturing compassion she shows, is the most heartwarming site I have ever been blessed to witness. I hope she keeps these values as she grows and becomes an adult. And becomes involved in a career like Nursing thats there to help people. And that her compassion shown within a career that is there to help others will change lives for the better.
Honestly, I don't think she's that bad of a person. She's just doing her job, a hard one at that. She's dealing with the mentally ill and if she shows any sign of weakness, they'll run all over her.
@angeltosome Not true at all. My family works in mental health and in the 60's and 70's there were tons of manipulative doctors and nurses like this. Stuff still needs to change but it's gotten a lot better.
I think they all get off on abuse. i have seen doctors have orgasm abusing people , and have no interest to help them iwas just saying that about en enconter at Er in Belvue with a gay male. a sick bastard creep..
i have a sister who is the epitimy. she just tried to use the same tactic o n me to get at my mind last year. it took root.. nurse ratchet lives... wretched Ratched ???? she lives.. and must die
The role she portrays in this film is not of someone who is convinced she's helping anyone. Louise Fletcher explained her character being that of someone sadistic who releases her sexual anxiety by causing pain to others. The only thing to symapthize about this type of person is that they are severly emotionally disturbed. In fact Louise Fletcher explain that when you watch her expression after the first group therapy session upset, she is supposed to be having an orgasm.
I wish when McMurphy was chocking her, he could of held on for just 5 more seconds. She would have been dead : ). Evil evil person, great acting for the woman though!!!
Louise Fletcher is great as the evil Nurse Ratched. She kind of reminds me of a girl that i once dated. even though she's not bossy like her but she looks a lot like her.
I love this villain. I absolutely love her. Why? She illustrates a very common and unfortunately empowered kind of evil. People who don't break a single rule, who don't deviate from the law at all. Yet they have no compassion for the people they have total power over. They use policy to control and torture. They will never go to prison. Villains like this show that evil people don't live in volcanic headquarters cackling madly. No, they are everywhere, especially where we are most vulnerable.
"People who don't break a single rule, who don't deviate from the law at all."
It´s a classic temptation. These people idolize a rule or law and hence turn the them into the goal itself. Thats the true madness in this movie, personified by Louise Fletcher as the nurse.
@Wellworm Why villain?I wouldn't say that. She is of all power and of course she wants more control discipline and more power in her hands and kind of person who we all know from schools...you know what I'm telling. But agree with you anyway, she has a such an amazing vibrating presence on screen.
@Wellworm I saw an interview with her and she said after this movie people actually came up to her and tried to hit her because they so associated her with the character. She won an Academy Award for this I think.
She deserved it. And I think that kind of visceral reaction is unfortunate, but further demonstrates the power of the character. Currently, we'll glorify the sheat out of the villains. We praise and admire the person who represents our darker urges by blowing the head off an opponent. We see violence as fantasy fun and titillating. Yet this quiet passive-aggressive woman still provokes such a profound reaction. I think it's because people like her truly run the world.
@Wellworm Who are you? Is this a quote or are you just completely brilliant??? I'm a nurse and it amazes me how many nurses have this mindset. They make the work environment so miserable. I feel it's a big reason for the nursing shortage, hoenstly.
No, I've just worked with kids and I see this type of behavior everywhere. I don't really have much faith in people left, honestly. It's an unfortunate but far too prevalent fact that power corrupts. Or should I say that in many cases; apathy and selfishness cause human compassion to rot.
@cocogrape I totally get why someone would cry at this scene. In spite of everything, MacMurphy is still able to pick up his spirits (along with his peers) and delve right into what makes life worth living. I LOVE R.P. MacMurphy.
I was in the mental ward last week and I can honestly say that there were nice people(for the most part) working the nurse/clean-up crews.
The doctors and social workers never really had enough time to get to know all the patients throughout the hospital, but that's understandable, we're in a recession and they've got to cut corners like the rest of us.
The thing that really got me is how they DESTROYED my confidence when I was in there, which is understandable, but still fucked up.
@4Tiny2 Even now I still feel my confidence waver, and it makes me question the VERY FUNDAMENTALS of the world. If it doesn't cause a high patient return rate immediately, I'm sure it causes mental problems that are just as severe down the line.
But maybe that's why the group therapy lessons afterward are optional, they basically go with the flow of how you feel; and if you feel you're well. By all means, make your attempt at society.
The scene embodies the whole "feel" of the film for me. You try to do things the right way by the book(the vote for the game) and you are still took down for it and then go mad trying to do the right thing.
This movie in my mind is one of the greatest movies ever made, there is SO much under the surface that can be seen after repeated viewings. Actually the themes of control and outright individual strangulation are so rampant-this is fascism in a small setting, but it is happening now.
Perfect and really sad film. This piece you just 'feel' how it is to be in such a institute. And for Jack making that effort just to see a little TV and than to be denied from miss Ratched in that particular way still makes me crzay of anger :-)
Nurse Ratched is the only thing that kind of bothers me about this movie. she just strikes me as unrealistic, she seems to be trying to make sure that the mentally ill stay mentally ill, and unhappy to boot. maybe it is really like that in real mental asylums, but i really doubt it. i can buy her not really trying to help them, but actively making sure that they stay as low as possible is just a little hard to swallow for me. feel free to correct me if i am missing something, it is just my view.

well, that is certainly one way to look at it, i see your point. and believe me, i love her performance, she does get across that she is cold hearted monster perfectly. and no, i missed Shutter Island, but i am planning to see it soon.
@Capstain259 it's defo' worth a viewing, i mentioned it because the end scene reminded me of "Cuckoo's nest" .......whether or not other people feel the same is again down to interpretation. pls Let me know what you think of it. thanks
@DictatorRoB at the beginng i thought danm what a milf!!!but as the movie whent along she went from ball breaker to heartless bitch and got uglier and uglier in my mind
@DictatorRoB well yeah i thought she was sexy AT THE BEGING and she just seemed a bit uppity but at the end shes a cold hearted bitch and that ruined her and every other movie she was in for me
@randomdave30 danm i never realized it but yeah he would make a good hannibal lecter maybe even better than anothy hopkins did in the silince of the lambs you do realize that jack nicohlson wasent in the silince of the lambs right?
@254core Er... Yes, I did know that I have seen the film many times, and I can tell you, quite categorically, that Jack Ncholson does not appear. Still he would have been brilliant as Hannibal the Cannibal - it would easily have been his greatest performance, and his greatest role..
@randomdave30 hmm just checking because you said "who have done justice to the role" and that sounded abit like you were saying that he has acted as lecter
@Nathan920 yeah well 62% of its profits werent for america and it wasent big in mainstream cluture i love it too but the average 17 weed smoking american kid semmed to think it was BS
Top drawer performances all round. Louise Fletcher is superb, and so true to life. Nurse Ratched isn't evil btw, she thinks she is helping all the patients, MacMurphy in particular. She argues for him to stay at the hospital and not be transferred back to prison. She even believes she is helping Billy. The film shows how the whole system of incarceration dehumanises all involved, staff and patients.
@NickOLarse999 i think you have seriously misinterpreted the movie. Nurse Ratched is a cunt, and all that's important to her is her tyrannical hold over the patients. She drives Billy to commit suicide after he had he even lost his nervous stutter. She represents corruption in the system, and is absolutely "evil"
@14ska8ordie14 Clearly the hospital regime was for Kesey and allegory for modern (specifically American) society. I don't think he wanted us to conclude that the problem with the hospital (society) was that it is run by "cunts" but that that the structure of society creates individuals like Nurse Ratched who demand conformity and believe they are helping people in doing so. Kesey's views are very much a part of the 1960's "society is to blame" ethos.
@14ska8ordie14 Even though Ratched drives Billy to suicide she believes she is helping him by demanding "normal" behaviour. I am certainly not alone in this interpretation. Cambridge professor Tony Tanner, for example, said "Big Nurse speaks for the fixed pattern, the unbreakable routine, the submission of individual will to mechanical, humourless control."
@NickOLarse999 It doesn't matter if she THINKS she is helping them. Maybe a man thinks he's helping someone by killing them. That doesn't make it right, and therefore, doesn't make her any less evil or fucked up.
Most of the nurses I know are too busy picking their VD scabs to do anything positive. The doctors step in dog crap and the nurses lick it up. They treat any question from patients as rebellion. These fat cows need to put down their Doritos and cell phones and do their jobs for a change. It amazes me how so many of them are big fat pigs. I would love to snap back at one if they ever tried to lecture me about my beer gut. When you have a tool like mine you need to build a shed over it.
Louise Fletcher is a beautiful evil woman. To all you shrinks out there: you 're no different than police.ALL OF YOU except the antipsychiatrists.Besides them,we should call all of you pigs.
I love this book and movie. Nurse Ratched is completely evil! She takes advantage of all these mental patients with this power trip. And that MONOTONE CALM VOICE!! OH God, you just want to strangle her. I absolutely hate her.
As a villain, Nurse Ratched is SO overrated. 5th place in AFI's villains list? Look at that list and see some of the characters she beat out, ridiculous. What makes her a villain? Not counting Chief's vote? Please, being strict and not letting the wackos do whatever they want hardly makes her a villain.
@deanriam I used to think she was a villian, too. But seeing the movie again on Turner Classics, she is overrated as a villian. Jack Nicholson is looked at as the hero, but he is always putting the others in jeopardy. No wonder I hear other actresses turned down the role as putting women down.
@deanriam what makes Nurse Ratched evil isn't really the fact that she doesn't count Cheifs vote. that makes her a bitch, but it doesn't make her evil. For me, what makes her evil is, when she finds Billy with Candy, she threatens to tell Billy's mom, which makes him freak and kill himself a few minutes later. She completly guilt trips and shames him and she KNOWS that that will freak Billy out, she KNOWS. And she does it anyways, and then has the nerve to blame McMurphy for it.
cool movie only movie whee jack can joke about 15 years old girls vagina, and able to hit a black guy in the face without getting in trouble for it,and also allow to choke a woman nearly to death without being look down upon.
i love this movie...anybody say's otherwise...u lyin you wouldn't be on the page..unless you got to do a project..then i wish you the best luck you will like this..it's great..plus he love all his hatas anyway
@simonwest123 not quite. When the Chief smashed the window and escaped, the inmates heard it, and cheered, thinking it was McMurphy. This gave them hope . Their hero had won. The Chief couldn't bear to see the defiant lively McMurphy he loved in such a state and one that would put the inmates in their place.
@m2frogger I'm not going to spoil it for you when you may later see the movie. Not going to spoil it for anyone else who hasn't seen the movie, either. I assumed fans who had already viewed it were posting here.
billy killed himself because of you y ungreatful bitch hope you die! oh ya why did the cheif kill mcmurphy at the end? please tell me!!!! =) if you know, that is?

@254core Er... Yes, I did know that I have seen the film many times, and I can tell you, quite categorically, that Jack Ncholson does not appear. Still he would have been brilliant as Hannibal the Cannibal - it would easily have been his greatest performance, and his greatest role..
randomdave30 1 year ago
@randomdave30 hmm just checking because you said "who have done justice to the role" and that sounded abit like you were saying that he has acted as lecter
254core 1 year ago
@254core Point taken. Who could have done justice to the role. My mistake and I humbly apologise .

@randomdave30 errr em you dont have to apologize

@254core On the contrary - I am english so I always apologise at every given moment - even when I am not at fault.

NickOLarse999 1 year ago
@NickOLarse999 i think you have seriously misinterpreted the movie. Nurse Ratched is a cunt, and all that's important to her is her tyrannical hold over the patients. She drives Billy to commit suicide after he had he even lost his nervous stutter. She represents corruption in the system, and is absolutely "evil"
14ska8ordie14 1 year ago
@14ska8ordie14 Clearly the hospital regime was for Kesey and allegory for modern (specifically American) society. I don't think he wanted us to conclude that the problem with the hospital (society) was that it is run by "cunts" but that that the structure of society creates individuals like Nurse Ratched who demand conformity and believe they are helping people in doing so. Kesey's views are very much a part of the 1960's "society is to blame" ethos.
NickOLarse999 1 year ago
@14ska8ordie14 Even though Ratched drives Billy to suicide she believes she is helping him by demanding "normal" behaviour. I am certainly not alone in this interpretation. Cambridge professor Tony Tanner, for example, said "Big Nurse speaks for the fixed pattern, the unbreakable routine, the submission of individual will to mechanical, humourless control."
NickOLarse999 1 year ago 3
@NickOLarse999 It doesn't matter if she THINKS she is helping them. Maybe a man thinks he's helping someone by killing them. That doesn't make it right, and therefore, doesn't make her any less evil or fucked up.

@zachandthemachines I disagree. Motives do make a difference.

I love this book and movie. Nurse Ratched is completely evil! She takes advantage of all these mental patients with this power trip. And that MONOTONE CALM VOICE!! OH God, you just want to strangle her. I absolutely hate her.
BigGildo 1 year ago
As a villain, Nurse Ratched is SO overrated. 5th place in AFI's villains list? Look at that list and see some of the characters she beat out, ridiculous. What makes her a villain? Not counting Chief's vote? Please, being strict and not letting the wackos do whatever they want hardly makes her a villain.
deanriam 1 year ago
@deanriam id put her at 5th if she was a direct copy from the book
MarioBrosClassic 1 year ago
@deanriam I used to think she was a villian, too. But seeing the movie again on Turner Classics, she is overrated as a villian. Jack Nicholson is looked at as the hero, but he is always putting the others in jeopardy. No wonder I hear other actresses turned down the role as putting women down.
anderdorm 1 year ago
@deanriam what makes Nurse Ratched evil isn't really the fact that she doesn't count Cheifs vote. that makes her a bitch, but it doesn't make her evil. For me, what makes her evil is, when she finds Billy with Candy, she threatens to tell Billy's mom, which makes him freak and kill himself a few minutes later. She completly guilt trips and shames him and she KNOWS that that will freak Billy out, she KNOWS. And she does it anyways, and then has the nerve to blame McMurphy for it.
flyingpigs1197 1 year ago
i can't believe Nurse Ratched was voted one of the best movie Villians. she is a pretty good villian.

i think they operated on him and he was so brain damaged the chief killed him coz ud never see the old mcmurphy again he was better off dead
simonwest123 1 year ago
@simonwest123 not quite. When the Chief smashed the window and escaped, the inmates heard it, and cheered, thinking it was McMurphy. This gave them hope . Their hero had won. The Chief couldn't bear to see the defiant lively McMurphy he loved in such a state and one that would put the inmates in their place.
