I grew Ghost bamboos. I soaked the seeds in warm salted water for ~10 minutes, then planted them in a used yogurt container. The hardest part I belive is to maintain the humidity and temperature. Before planting, I poured enough water in the potting mix, then turned it over with my palm pressing the mix to drain maximum water. Then I planted seeds and covered container with cling wrap. In 2 weeks, 1 out of 3 sprouted, another week after another one sprouted- the third one didn't germinate.
if Bamboo is a pest and it "Shares resources" using its Roots then why dont people put poison in its natural water source and let the poison Spread from plant to plant
How long does it take for a Phyllostachys Pubescens 'Moso' seedling to reach maturity or maximum size? And how long will it take for a mature plant to form a growth and eventually forming a small patch of bamboo forest?
Thats actually the primary way bamboo is cultivated. They RARELY produce seeds. You simple have to cut the clump of bamboo into a few pieces and each will grow like mad.
I'm wanting to grow some Bamboo from seed so that I can cut it down and make a garden hut out of it. I plan for the hut to be 3.8meters x 3.8meters. I live in the east of the United Kingdom and I was wondering if somebody could tell me what species of Bamboo would work best for my project.

Soak the seeds in warm water for 15 minutes. Plant them in soil loose enough to allow new plants to sprout easily, a garden ceter employee can suggest one. Plant them in a humidity tray with dome & cover with a 1/4 inch of soil. Place them in a good source of light. I use a bright white 100 watt compact fluorescent light bulb. It can take 3-4 weeks or longer for the seeds to sprout. Keep the soil moist but not soggy & open the dome vents to let in fresh air & excess moisture out as needed.
I'm thinking about planting bamboo around the perimeter of my backyard for privacy, but I don't want to pepper my neighbors' yards w/ leaves. Do these plants shed a lot of leaves?
Not all bamboo is invasive...there is running bamboo, and clumping bamboo. Clumping bamboo is not invasive. However ALL kinds of bamboo shoots are edible. You can easily identify clumping bamboo from running bamboo...running bamboo has vertical edges up and down the stem of the plant...clumping has none. The shoots can be harvested just like asparagus (4 inches high) peeled and then pressure canned.
I now this a old message to be replying but did this person tell you where they got there seeds from.Cause in Nurses there wanting $300 for a gallon pot of Bamboo.I just can't find anyplace on the net that sells them.
Cold hardy bamboo should do well if you make divisions including topgrowth and rootball. Airlayering and cuttings of coldhardy bamboo won't succeed. Tropical and subtropical bamboos are the ones that can be rooted from cuttings with tropical giving the best success generally.
I planted a small division of Phyllostachys bambusoides (Madake)on our land less than 10 years ago and we have some culms that are about 4" in diameter. Our Moso with its small leaves looks heavenly but the larger culms die due to our hot Texas climate. I believe it will stay relatively small in diameter.

@funktapus No I meant like a branch without a root. Like a branch from a culm not a whole itself

@MrMMABoy From what I have heard, depending of the environment that the bamboo is grown in, moso bamboo can grow up to 90 feet tall.

Bamboo is an invasive species and will quickly spread and destroy the root system of neighboring plants, so be careful.

I know the running type does, but does the clumping variety do so as well?

you can easily make a barrier for bamboo using bricks or if your really into it, they cant cross water
