The pools are for irrigation. Any farmer could tell you that. The circles around the buildings are roads, which again are not uncommon. Many of those markings were created as landmarks so pilots can tell where they are should they become lost.

About that huge crater: look up Sedan Crater on Wikipedia. Amazingly the Dept. of Energy gives free monthly tours to the crater and the rest of the NTS, which is right next door to Groom Lake. No cameras or cell phones allowed on the tour of course.
Type in Mercury, NV. and Google Earth will take you to where the tour starts. Go just south of town and check out the heavy security gates there.
