this track always drags me back ,,must be a celt thing ,,i feel your love for the emerald isle ,,being half irish and welsh ,,i understand ,,we have a word here in wales called Hiraeth ,,check it out ,,you will know and understand :)
@xxpiggystardustxx yes..i love the place, and i miss it terribly...and yet i know there's no going back ....i do go back there in the literal sense, but when i'm there i see and talk to more ghosts that actual living people . ireland is a great place...a real blessing to have been brought up there.i hold it very close.....hiraeth is exactly the word for it.
Paddy Reilly does a nice interpretation of this song & captures the flavor & the nationalism inherent in the Irish pub scene! Your rendition however is so haunting & emotional & goes beyond the spirit of the song! It's suppose to be in Carrickfergus, but u take it somewhere else...& we're with u all the way!
I found this video and this ballad, which I have never heard before, by chance. I checked out other versions on u-tube, but none of them came even close to yours. There is a yearning, a feeling of regret and a feeling of place in this song and you have captured it perfectly. Just a guy with a guitar, a folk ballad and an amazing voice...but this moves me.
You know how it feels to get a load of clean sheets out of the dryer, and before you start folding them you just hold them close and feel the warmth soak in all over you? Well that's what I do with your voice.
wild man ed...i wish i could hit those great low notes that you do !.......also...there's nothing i do on the guitar that you can't do sir...what i play is super simple
I have gone from thundering to unplugged, in zero to 60 ,...just my modus operandi:-) .you are totally amazing.....such a be-utiful rendition love yer percussives...sound is awesome too..10 by 10 star 4u..big applause!!!!
GADS Paul, is this not delicious? I LOVE this !!!!!!!! I hope you have seen the vid collab posted yesterday (BigLoveZone/MaryC)......like going to church:-).....
This is remarkable. One of the purest performances I have ever witnessed. The guitar is fabulous with the simple strumming paired with perfect tapping. Your voice is so clean and clear. Very touching.
I can remember family hoildays in Portrush when I was a child. I used to love the amusements. Great fun for a wee kid from Belfast.....Cheers.....Davey.
thanks davey..my guitar technique is real simple,i sort of make the most of the little i know...i'm in envy of what you can do..your video of'red house is class...great playing and i love your black telecaster...its great to see what people from home are doing... i'm from portrush.
Lovely song Mary. I know where you are singing about, my Mother came from Shrigley, near Killyleagh on the Strangford Loch...lovely part of the world...definately worth singing about...5/5
you're right.... i know! .. i know!...i have to be honest..i simply fluffed my lines..there was another take of me singing it all correctly, but somehow this one seemed the best even though it's flawed.
I find it very difficult to find a good version of this song. This is my favourite on youtube! Still looking for a version I heard a while back ago... thanks for this one, though <3
what a lovely thing to write...thanks!!!...i'm sure in time you'll find better versions than mine.....but i do love singing that song...it's so mortal...sad and human
I started to sing harmony with you but I preferred to hear your voice, it's so unique and honest. Thank you taking a song I know so well and giving me back something fresh and new.
thank you!...a very enjoyable compliment coming from one of the freshest new musicvideo makers...i look forward to seeing all the other bands you do...i'd like you to do glasvegas next
interesting you posted this as a response. I just learned "The Water Is Wide" which is basically the English version of this Irish tune last week. hmmmm. nice job, I like your percussive guitar playing very much, great voice too.
Love you much

II wish I was in Carrickfergus, only for nights in Ballygran
I would swim over the deepest ocean, the deepest ocean for my love to find
But the sea is wide and I cannot swim over and neither have I wings to fly
If I could find me a handsome boatman to ferry me over to my love and die

My childhood days bring back sad reflections of happy times I spent so long ago
My boyhood friends and my own relations have all passed on now like melting snow
But I'll spend my days in endless roaming soft is the grass my bed is free
Ah to be back in Carrickfergus on that long road down to the sea
kentishbloke 2 years ago
And in Kilkenny it is reported there are marble stones as black as ink
With gold and silver I would support her, but I'll sing no more now till I get a drink
I'm drunk today and I'm seldom sober, a handsome rover from town to town
Ah, but I'm sick now, my days are numbered so come all ye young men and lay me down
