There was a guy named Jerome Mathis who ran a hand timed 4.25 at the '05 combine and coaches in the MEAC (Mid East Athletic Conference) said he was the closest thing to a YOUNG BULLET BOB HAYES coming out of Div.1-AA Hampton while he played for Houston.
Hand timing means NOTHING. I have watched hundreds upon hundreds of hand-timers at track meets. They get it wrong, but they still get it more right than the most pathetic hand timing I've ever witnessed: at combines and a football field. I have seen football coaches start the timer when the runner starts, and not vice versa! It is a complete and utter joke. I've seen countless 4.2ers in football fail to compete in track. It's just dumb. Learn to time, football folks.
@decadyne In fact it was the opposite the guy I mentioned in a previous post folks felt he ran even faster than his clocking of 4.25 Jerome Mathis I think some clocked him in a sub 4.2.
The NFL's "timing" method is useless and people should complain about it. In it, the athlete can start when he wants -- he doesn't react to any external stimulus. I would love to have seen Maurice Green's NFL 40 combine time. He would have run under 4.
The NFL's attempts to quantify speed are inferior. The problems have already been worked out by FAT, but the NFL -- true to the hubris of ignorance -- wants to do it its own way.
Bo's 40 was hand timed. Even most accurate hand-timing is about .22 off. None of any of Bo's other 40s was near this time. I would say this chalks up to a timing anomaly and it is definitely *not* anything close to a "standard" for the combine.
Darrell Green ran sub 4.2's and a 10.06 in the 100m dash in college. He was simultaneously the quickest and fastest football player ever, for probably about 18 years. After he turned 40 he just didn't train that hard anymore, realistically who would at that point?
I went to Eastern Michigan with Geoff while he played there for a few years before going to howard.... He ran a 4.22 when I was there... trust me he is fast!
sports illustrated, bob hayes pro track circuit, ran 4.3 electronically timed. all these 4.2' and 4.1's are 4.4 or 4.5 electronic!!! hayes also ran 10.06 on cinder(dirt)lets see how many guys today could pull that off
no one could come close. chris johnson 4.24 40 but 10.62 100m. auto time for track is even slower because the person reacts to the gun. that means bob hays would run a 4.0 FAT 40
ha, good one. Willie "The Bullet" Gault. I'm not sure if he ran a 3.9 because that is sprinter speed, but he was one of the fastest. Bob Hayes was faster
Put it this way they aint playin givem repsect he aint no devin hester and game speed is all that matter she probably cant run that fast in the NFL devin hester game speed is 4.27 *think ppl think*
all you guys are talking about these crazy times when the only reliable time is electronic. the record is like 4.29 or something. handtime can be so off it could vary by 1-2 tenths. trindon holiday is the fastest football player ever. he ran a 10.02 100 compared to sanders's 10.3
Sorry, I'm a skins fan, but DG never ran a 4.09. DG himself said he ran a 4.15 as his fastest timed. The 4.09 that you speak of is a rumor started by someone who posted it on yahoo.
gatlin ran a 4.1 hand-timed at a texans workout in houston
and even though ben johnson ran a 4.38 which was FAT timed if you account for the reaction time of the gun and the reaction time of the timer for the semi-electric timing they use at the NFL combine he would've easily been in the sub 4.2 range.
LOL at anyone who thinks that T Holliday is faster than Bob Hayes over 100m. LOL again that T Holliday has the fastest acceleration in the world. Asafa Powell would dust him over 40yd as would Leonard Scott
Don't get me wrong, I am a big fan of T Holliday and understand that he has got great speed. But I'm a T&F guy aswell and the track guys would beat the Football guys over 40yd most of the time
Well I'll be damned - Ran that 10.02 in the semis of the NCAA Champs. I'm not splitting hairs, but Hayes would've beaten Holliday in a 100m anyday of the week. But a PR is a PR
Fastest track athlete who also played football, we don't know if he would have beaten any football player would have beaten him. Track speed... and there's game speed.
No that's not official. NFL combine times are hand timed so they're not as accurate as electronic timing. The fastest track and field runners run their first 40 yards in the 4.3's, so how is he faster than them. Also I believe when Ben Johnson ran his 9.79 in 1988 he ran his first 40 yards in an estimated 4.37seconds. NFL 40 times are usualy 0.2-0.3 seconds faster than the real time ran. So if he were electronically timed he probably would've had a time in the 4.5's.
the nfl combine is partially electrically timed how the 40's work are there's some that starts them by hand and the clock is stopped electrically when then cross the ending line. So they aren't completely accurate there's still that degree of human reaction time at the start.
Man you don't know what the hell you're tallkin about. Trindon Holliday can run a 4.2 and his 100 METER dash time is faster than Bob Hayes' 100 YARD dash time. Trindon Holliday has the fast accelateration in the world which most football players to, but his top end speed ain't shit compared to Tyson Gay's or Asafa Powell's. But the 40 is all acceleration and that's it so that's why some football players (not many) can run a 4.2 or 4.3.
Darrell Green could have run a legit 4.3. The only person to beat him his senior year in college was Carl Lewis. Yes, He ran track. Darrell was also a better football player than bob Hayes.
Just to chime in, Darrell Green ran a 4.2 40 yrd dash in the redskins training camp when he was 40 years old. His fastest time recorded was a 4.12 earlier in his career
oo this was 4.25 HAND-TIMED that means its really a 4.50 because its a rule that u have to add .25 seconds to every hand-timed forty cause its never accurate, (its always a little faster than what it really is)
actually its .14 due to due visual delay. And 4.25 is possible, I have been to college combines where people run 4.27-4.3 electronic. And that is as legit as you get.
If the top track and field runner can't run under 4.3 then how do you think that some college cats in run under 4.3. That's bullshit you're talking about. Look up Ben Johnson 4.37 to prove all your talk is wrong.
My talk is not wrong, top track runners can't run under 4.3 because in a 40 yard sprint it is about quickness. If a 40 yard sprinter runs against a 100m sprinter, the 40 yarder will most likely go to the short sprinter, but in that extra distance the 100m sprinter will catch up and beat the short sprinter. Comfusing to read, but the only way I could think to say it.
agree. The 100m dash champions are running faster than anyone from 40 - 100 meters. These guys that run 4.2s, would get walked down by 100m sprinters in the latter part of the race.
