This was during Mary's change.... her voice wasn't coming out a lot of performances during this time and I think she would get frustrated. I want to say this was during the Love & Life period. Every performer has their off days. MJB is a legend regardless of what period you grew up in. She is one of the greats!

Im a huge fan of Natalie cole's voice but she was one of the example of the stiffness that continued down to Whitney and Anita. And the 80's provided us with Teena Marie, Cherrelle, and Vesta, but they were inconsistent with their work

I'm a HUGE Chaka fan... and I have lot's of love for Mary too. Everyone knows Chaka smokes Mary.. including Mary.. evident by the way she backed up when Chaka hit "the note". Mary was NOTHING but humble. That being said.. aside from a couple of sharp notes.. Mary's vocal performance was good. She has come a long way from the days when she was hit or miss. She's mostly hit these days.. and I've heard Chaka sound terrible on certain nights. That's what makes a singer.. taking a chance live.

Chaka was amazing. She is sober now her vocals are crystal clear. Mary is a solid singer she is better on a recording than she is live. Anybody with ears can hear it. I'm glad that Mary has overcome a ton and she is a good singer... but I think her story is better than her talent. Especially when matched up against Khan

Don't get it twisted I love Mary J but Chaka is my girl and she could've blew Mary straight out the water, that's called humility.....When Mary did sweet thing in 93' her voice wasn't even at it's full potential yet, she was going through some rough times. I don't know why the new skoolas are so on the defense. Once Mary grew more (vocally), left those drugs and KC alone then her and her voice really blossomed. Can't help but get in on this. To me Chaka knows exactly what she's got in the tank at all times. She doesn't waste her breath, even on big notes. Jazz is the elephant in the room in regards to phrasing, she can go where ever the hell she want's. Check out her sitting in on it with Prince, she hasn't got her range, stays just inside and still eats it up. She is it.

I'm a HUGE Chaka fan... and I have lot's of love for Mary too. Everyone knows Chaka smokes Mary.. including Mary.. evident by the way she backed up when Chaka hit "the note". Mary was NOTHING but humble. That being said.. aside from a couple of sharp notes.. Mary's vocal performance was good. She has come a long way from the days when she was hit or miss. She's mostly hit these days.. and I've heard Chaka sound terrible on certain nights. That's what makes a singer.. taking a chance live.

Chaka was amazing. She is sober now her vocals are crystal clear. Mary is a solid singer she is better on a recording than she is live. Anybody with ears can hear it. I'm glad that Mary has overcome a ton and she is a good singer... but I think her story is better than her talent. Especially when matched up against Khan

Don't get it twisted I love Mary J but Chaka is my girl and she could've blew Mary straight out the water, that's called humility.....When Mary did sweet thing in 93' her voice wasn't even at it's full potential yet, she was going through some rough times. I don't know why the new skoolas are so on the defense. Once Mary grew more (vocally), left those drugs and KC alone then her and her voice really blossomed. "Share My World" she was still trying to get her life together but the cd was good.

Can't help but get in on this. To me Chaka knows exactly what she's got in the tank at all times. She doesn't waste her breath, even on big notes. Jazz is the elephant in the room in regards to phrasing, she can go where ever the hell she want's. Check out her sitting in on it with Prince, she hasn't got her range, stays just inside and still eats it up. She is it.

I just thought of something! Mary didn't even try to hit those notes on that bridge in the studio almost 18 years ago on 'What's The 411" So she's had 18 years to improve her range to some measure of degree! Since she's a technical singer & not a natural 1, @ least figure out how to creatively replace notes she's incapable of hitting with something else musically appropiate! I'm sometimes baffled that seasoned professionals in the industry when they are singing with a fellow singer that has more vocal prowess then they do try to match they more superior singers NATURAL vocal ability rather than sing to their own unique strengths which gave them THEIR OWN status, I'm gonna have to agree with @BLAQUEMUSCLE I love Mary J but this wasn't too good, Chaka Khan's voice is equivalent to an alto sax, can't really compete with that, whether it be deliberate or subconscious.

@1990soulman: I can understand and respect that, but if you note the career of the iconic Chaka Khan, she has been effortlessly hitting ridiculous notes since she was a teenager with Rufus and her voice is even stronger today.
I dig Mary myself and respect that she pays homage to these legends that put it down in the 70s and many are still hanging in there to this day.

oh man poor mary..i love her 2 death really but wtf u gonna do when chaka hits notes like that no effort nothing..no one should even bother doin a duet with chaka..the only one i could think who could match chaka in a duet is christina aguilera...christina would blow the roof down with her runs...

@longn4longhair All you said is true but compared to the other bullshit out there you have to agree Christina towers over them! Excellent point though! Chaka uses her wails & riffs as creative musical expression much like scatting & Christina does it to show off even if the song doesn't call for it!But that still doesn't negate she has skills!!! She just needs to learn where & when to use them!!!

@littlemissinnocen100 I can stand her ass(not to be offend) She tries to put soul in her songs by grunting and growling and shouting.her runs are a hot sloppy mess. When i here Xtina sing i cringe,you know how black people we have this soulful sound in our voice that white people don't have.I mean white people have soul....but theirs is differnt feeling from ours.Xtina's voice is annoying sometimes

What Mary lacks n talent she more than makes up n nerve & that nerve has catapulted her 2 superstardom & icon status! You could never compare the 2! They're both 2 different singers: Chaka is a natural singer & Mary is a technical 1!Think Natalie Cole!
