Does someone remember the sunday she sang the "Pie Jesu" in Faure's Requiem at Carnegie Hall under the baguette of Charles Dutoit with the Orchestre Symphonique de montréal an his Choir? I remember it, I was in the Choir, I was crying, my friends on my side, basses, where crying, I turned on the right, all the women where crying, I think that everybody at Carnegie Hall cried that sunday. Such a pure experience in the heart of music and emotion. And no microphone to tape it!
I hated this type of music ... until I heard Sylvia here. She transfigurates it. Of course she had so much more to say in Handel, but doing this so well, so wholeheartedly helps bring new people to real music and this is an incredible gift. Once more, thanks Sylvia. "From now on, no trouble" I wish you. Hope to meet you and listen to you in the real world some time.
Actually, she doesn't have vocal problems - she's still performing all over! She had to take a temporary break due to being diagnosed with breast cancer, but she's a survivor, is well and is still fabulous! She's also teaching at Indiana University. (I'm honored to study with her!) Keep your eyes peeled for her in her future performances and please keep her in your prayers :)
Wow, glad to hear that she's still out there, even though she may not be performing opera and classical music anymore (pls correct me if I'm wrong - I wish I was wrong!!) I can only listen to her recordings, no way she'll be performing near my place soon, so I have started peeling my eyes for any hint of her in youtube and anywhere else. Many thanks for your news!!!
Don't mention it! Just wanted to get the good news out there :) She does still perform classical repertoire but not as much anymore. She does more concerts/recital programs as opposed to operas and sings EVERYTHING from theater to jazz (She's so versatile). She also just came out with a new Christmas CD which you should look into! It's a compilation of a few fabulous sopranos in history! Called "Angels". Thanks for supporting her! :)
So glad to hear she's still singing and teaching. She is my favorite classical singer ever! I will never, ever tire of hearing her sing Mozart, Handel, Faure, etc.

glorious singing as always! oh, how i miss her so much, it's so sad she has to retire early from the opera world over vocal problems.
