superb playing!! But I was expecting some instruction in this style of playing and not merely a performance. I only wish I hadn't broken my pinky knuckle some years ago because it has affected the efficiency of my little finger which is important to have full use of to play certain runs such as the man in the white t-shirt played.
Hi hi! Have you considered the X7 Guitar Mind Implant (google it)? Ive heard some great things about it and my friend learned to play like in a week with it.
Frank is playing is signature Benedetto model, as far as I know they are extremely hard to get hold of. Andreas is playing a guitar made in somewhere like Finland I can't quite remember. He mentions where the guitar is from on his instructional website though
I love both of these guitarists playing, they both have very distinct styles and it works for both of them. Obviously Andreas demonstrates more technical prowess in this particular video, but I don't think he loses any feeling or melodic sense, and as he also demonstrates in the beginning of his first solo, he is perfectly capable of playing slow, clever lines as well. Both of these guitarists just have amazing versatility which I really admire.
Both players are kinda amazing. For myself if the music stops being about having fun and melodic I rather whistle in the dark. Strum 3 campfire chords to a requested pop song at beginner level and be encouraged or having nitpicky theory elitist argue over whos more technically proficient than the other. For these musician artists maintaining their integrity is always a test to see who is still appreciative and who fails to get it. Campfire somehow in its innocence still prevails!
@surrealIdeal na you got him confused, thats vigo mortisen, crafty little bugger thought that disguise would full me but hes going to have to do alittle beter then just dying his hair to full me.. Im not stupid!!
And to those that think Andreas is playing too fast - you are of course entitled to your own opinions - should at least try to understand what the notes are before you you cross your arms and try and come up with some advise for the guy.
@crisDAwog I also think that frank, from a single note alternate picking standpoint , cannot compete with andreas. Frank however is an awesome rhythm guitarist and does chord phrasing better than andreas.
The "voice" difference is the difference in the guitars. Betcha if they switched axes, Andreas would have sounded different. That D-hole recorded a little harsh, could even be a mic issue. Frank's traditional jazz is slightly retarded on the get-go as well, so hence the difference in styles.
Damn! Totally cool...soo, it's not all about speed, note selection and phrasing is also very important, but to be able to do it fast is also cool. These guy's are both very good, yes two different styles, and that is what makes the world an interesting place, :^)
To all you people arguing about who is better, this is ridiculous. Those are two completely different forms of jazz. Frank is playing smooth jazz with some altered roots, while Andreas is playing gypsy style. Its not that he is playing faster, its that it's more stoccatto and the scales are extended. BUT! The one thing I feel that Andreas has over Frank is a "voice". He does alot of subtle moves and techniques that, while they may not be very hard, make it stand out. Frank is playing text book.
Well, just because something is faster doesn't make it better. That's all that I'm really saying. If you want to argue with that, have fun. I'm a touring musician. I've done tours in the United States, Canada, Brazil, etcetera. I'm sort of a professional guitarist, so you can try to call me an idiot if you want, but seriously, if you think that just because something is faster that makes it better then you have some growing to do as a musician.
It's too bad that our music culture is so obsessed with virtuosity these days. I used to be obsessed with it years ago, but now I'm a guitar teacher and I am able to appreciate much more the kinds of tasteful things that Frank Vignola plays. They teach together and both know a LOT of theory, however they are only stylistically different. Andreas is a great player, but I'm confident that Frank could play all of the same things that Andreas plays. They only differ in styles of expression.
oyecarnal stop trying to justify second rate jazz guitar playing. frank sucks. He cant even play half the licks Andreas can. Andreas knows more theory plays faster cleaner and more melodic. ergo he is a better guitarist/virtuoso RECOGNIZE
@Jazztastic2112 you fucking idiot shut your fucking mouth off , tired of hearing pseudo idiots , that think they can rate people based on their musical tastes etc , this is all subjective so please stop talking shit , not for anything he is a recognized player , just get out of this world of music , comments like this make me sick
oyecarnal ur dumb Andreas plays fast and amazing runs that frank couldnt even dream of playing.... Andreas thinks melodically that fast... go ahead n try and break down one of those licks that andreas does ull see its more beutifull than anything frank can play slow
notice how Frank plays amazing music with amazing sound while Andreas plays just fast runs.... don't get me wrong. they are both great guitarists. But what separates a true genius from the other skillful guitarists is what one chooses to play.
@MrMifka88 haha I knew that you were german by saying " ist " :) Das ist Musik! Liebst du Andreas Oberg? Ich spiele guitar. Tschuss ( lolo i'm trying to speak german )
I think I should dwell more into music theory, because I don't know too much. I learned bass playing mostly by myself, and these things like "A-minor" just kind of passed by me.
Wow the guy on the left is really good looking. Probably helps that Frank doesn't have much of a fashion sense, but that's a good thing. It doesn't distract you as much from the music.
This is simple every day practice I do at home! When I'm asleep... I think Frank's Solos have more value for someone who wants to get the feel of that music. I'd say Andreas is technically more efficient but Frank's notes are thicker, more vibrant and generally more beautiful.
Both of them great musicians and nice guys for supplying us with all this material.
@mathrockshard I totally agree!I lost 5 minutes and 32 seconds of my life.I don't get why people do that? It's bad enough that i'm teaching myself guitar and we get people that just rub it in your face that they can play what you can't.lol
@pilotbutterfly rofl dude, I was merely stating the possible title on why that video is a lesson....no need to get all worked up and I'm sure my comment is pretty clear cut..peace

@contrarew It's the dorian scale over A minor... So the note F# on a A minor chord... Andreas plays in his first solo 2 times. Cool sound!

Andreas makes me sick.
Not only is he a killer player, (and his guitar that sounds twice as good as Vignolas) but he looks like a nordic god/hollywood film star as well. LOL! ;-D

@kapitanswing Yeah, and according to wikipedia he was also a tennis prodigy. Some guys just get it all, eh?
