Why are all youtube guitar critics such idiots? So many comments here are worried about who is better , more technical, who went faster, this guy is better than this guy, no this one is best of all time, no this one is. Birelli is great. But there are hundreds alive that are great and there are even more who have passed on. This is not a sporting event.
it is only the soft sound of a good old archtop that makes some listeners think of GB.
They are different players, Bireli is much stronger but believe me, not because of technical reasons, he has more fantasy , more music power, and more RESISTANCE AGAINST COMMERCIAL SHIT.
Regarding the comparison of their playing, I think Biréli Lagrène does himself and George Benson great honour. I also think that, in spite of his awesome technique, Biréli shows humility and grace in his collaborations. Biréli Lagrène and George Benson are surely aware that they each have a`special place among the ranks of those musicians who have bequeathed a magnificent legacy for the benefit of all; as Gene Lees wrote, "You can't steal a gift".
Honestly ..when i listen to Bireli I focus on it the technicallity of his playing..I don't actually listen to the music...I think he force it tooo much. Like he feel he needs to to demonstrate his playing excellence.
@canutesimpson forget Benson. He did a few good records - beyond the blue horizon, white rabbit- and then vanished completely from the (jazz-) scene. What impresses here within bireli's solo is actually going on in the head of the player and not in the fingers. I am really tired of hearing "the guitarist is demonstrating....." this happens elsewhere in other places mostly with metal or hard rock players
Bereli legend for his playing and GB for his music! Give Me The Night Turn Your Love Around Never Give Up On A Good Thing Love X Love Nothing’s Gonna Change My Love For You The Greatest Love Of All Feel Like Making Love Breezin’ This Masquerade In Your Eyes You Are The Love Of My Life Lady Love Me Kisses In The Moonlight Love All The Hurt Away – f Aretha Franklin Being With You Moddy’s Mood Nature Boy Love Ballad Shiver On Broadway
He plays soul, blues, ballads, jazz, and scats. I have even danced to Benson in the clubs and at parties:
Sorry folks, but George is more musically accomplished and gifted.
Bereli scratches the surface of a being a complete musician, although he is technically a legend in guitar history, and I would say edges George TECHNICALLY.
all jazz players sound the same after awhile, too many licks are redundant, and too many runs just go on and on with no purpose other than to impress themselves in some marathon lick run off.
I love his "Le Grand" guitar from this image, it has got an amazing sound, and the look is astonishing! His L-5 is pretty darn beautiful too, not to mention his freaking Citation (that costs more than a new car!)! Great sound, superior player!
The "licks" that GB plays are not his licks they are jazz licks. Many originated with horn players. There are many great jazz guitar players, GB is one of them. Bireli is fantastic...
but there is a benson taste....and nobody can cook it the same....maybe you take the same ingredients to it like GB and you try to spice it like he does but spicies are very tiny things so it's hard to find the sam ammount and on how big fire do you work on many people can or used to or just want to make the sam taste but nobody made the very same....
It speaks volumes as to who Bireli loved to listen to as a young Guitarist, and it is a tribute to George Benson that Bireli plays so great. Remember who came first and with all tradition we carry on. No one is better than the other, They are both the Great, music is not an Olympic event its art.
Jazz guitarists are all different. Benson is unique in that he is super fast but is a showman and entertainer. He is palatable to both jazz heads and just a person who want to listen to fun dance-able jazz. Bireli on the other hand is aiming at being a technical beast. He also quotes quite a bit. Both are awesome guitarists who cater to different audiences.
Por favor, alguien puede decirme que tema es este? com licencia alguem me podra falar como é que chama-se esta cançao? please, i want to know how is the name song; gracias, obrigado, thanks.
My gosh, so much musicality at that speed... this is proof of greatness. Usually with fast tempos, the ideas fade away, only the great like Parker, Brown and Lagrene are able to think and create at the speed of light...
I can only think of two guys who could follow him and win...Michael Brecker or Aydin Esen. Frank Gambale or Allan Holdsworth could equal him, but I don't think there would be a decisive "win".
thank god that there isn't any race in music (win? :D:D) :) compare bireli & gambale ? LOL they are kings in their own styles that they built up for themselves.........
Well many of musicians are competitive we are always comparing. That's just the nature of the beast. Surely not all musician feels that way, but it is a choice people make. And what's wrong with that?
I feel that people who say things like, "There's not race to win" are guilty of ivory tower thinking. Making those types of comments makes them feel "above it all". Everyone is looking for an excuse, one way or the other, to claim superiority aren't they? Even those who say there's no race to win!
Sorry dude, but when he's not playing a bunch of watered down pop George Benson is just as impressive. Bireli tends to get lost in technical acrobatics at times where as Benson always has technique but he also never loses the emotion in his playing. To me Benson is the most natural guitarist in the world and for straight-ahead jazz styles that puts him at the top. There are others greater than him, but I'm speaking only of those still living.
I generally don't compare btw genres! I put Alan Holdsworth, Scott Henderson, Greg Howe, Gambale then maybe Metheny to round out the top 5 in the fusion Genre.
For more traditional styles I put Benson on top (when he chooses to play traditional that is) followed by Pat Martino. After those two forget about it. Lagrene doesn't even sho up on my radar. I think of him more as a novelty player! I mean seriously! I you bitch enough I might concede Jimmy Bruno. Maybe!
Bireli is considered the most natural ( and the same time unreal ) guitarrist of all time. He can simply play anything he wants. Not what he thinks the audience wants to hear.
Stop smoking crack man! Bireli will naturally impress people who are easily wowed by the blatant display of over the top technique. But to me that cheapens his overall vibe! I expect such indulgent displays from the Steve Vai's and Malmsteens of this world, not an accomplished jazz guitarist. That's why I put Benson in #1. If Joe Pass, Wes and some others were still around it would be a different story.
You need to find some "RARE" clips were Benson is really playing! I know, they're hard to find. But if you don't think Benson is a genius then you just don't know the man! There's much more to George than "Give me te night".
in 1982 my father assisted to a concert of george benson and that day george benson gave him his guitar ibanez STUDIO 50 and i am playing with it now .....
I don't like the majority of Benson's music either! That shit is just bad! Did I mention corny as hell as well? But when Benson decides to get serious, I pitty any guitarist that has the nerve to stand beside him on stage! Benson will make the most elite guitarists in the world contemplate giving up playing altogether!

Ask George...he would probably tell you that Bereli (technically) is better …. Just!
Ask Bereli, who is the better musician...He would concede George is greater. So I depend what context you are arguing to.
But I know who I will be putting on tonight while I making love to my wife...definitely not Bereli :-)

People people people...
All this talk about Bireli and Benson. Bereli is a technically a better guitarist and Benson is definately the better musician.
Benson sings (this is a big deal in the Benson repertoire) especially when he scats over his guitar playing (dam...sooo smooth) and does his ballads.
He conducts and composes, he writes his own songs (this is also a big deal in the Benson repertoire).
