Hmmm - this game may not have been the first of its type.
Midway acquired the rights to make Datsun 280 Zzzap - a very similar game, in January 1976. Whereas Atari got their rights in October 1976 to make Night Driver.
It's possible that Atari were first to release their game though (in November 1976), closely followed by Midway's version.
So this didn't have a rating of your score in this game? I mean, like Sprint, Super Bug or Monte Carlo (something like "Granny" for a low score, or "Sorry" up to something like "Pro" or "Ace" for a good score). I didn't play this much when I was real little so I can't remember.
@cloudwalkerty buy a good camera, get good light, microphone, have a professional shoot it and spend a few years in college in televisin school for starters.
nice job biff! i used to play the sitdown version of this. my older brother used to slide the front of the unit from side to side to make it feel like a motion game! :p
I have played this once in a denver bar and i laughed my ass off but i was also skunked between that and the old starwars coin-op i would say that was a fun game
Night Driver and the original Sprint were a couple of awesome early video games. I don't think there was an actual maximum speed in Night Driver which could be humanly attained. I read somewhere that you just kept accelerating in 4th gear until you inevitably smacked the wall. I never played it enough to know if that was true, since the arcades I went to in the late 70s were more about pinball, but my favorite one did have a one player Sprint machine.
great looking review ! i was born in 81 and the 70's videogames are in this dark corner of my video game universe yet to be truly explored. as a kid growing up with gaming friends, they were the systems that our dads and older brothers played and im talking 1985 and 86 so everyone had pretty much moved on to the master system and nintendo.id see these carts and machines out of use in basements and think what it was liek in their golden day. today i can watch vids about them =) mby collect soon
@narox Dude, must be nice in hawaii. Here in Florida it's 4 am. I'm tired, yet uploading these videos for everyone. You? Must be watching Leno or Letterman. Nice and early.
I remember this game vividly. It was at the mall in a gameroom by the opening. The opening was round, not square, with tiles around it. At the entrance was a sit down car racing game. Pretty cool. But what was cooler was the entrance. Looked like a big Hobbit's door.

I remember this. What amazes me more is that the Atari 2600 version added a honking "parked" car as an obstacle, some background trees and homes.

I never seen this ever in arcade form, I only had the Atari 2600 ported version.
This game reminds me of some hilarious drunk driving moments. = )

I used to love this game when I was a kid. This game was released when I was born, so it stuck around the arcades for a long time. :)
