@vito445 A large amount of Simo Häyhä's kills were with a submachine gun, but the majority of his kills were with his Mosin Nagant sniper rifle. Also Simo Häyhä mostly killed normal soldiers, and the soviets were easy killing from a distance since many times they were just running againts the enemy and had little or no combat training. It's not the AMOUNT of kills that makes a good sniper it is WHO they kill, like generals and officers. PS: Finland is not part of Scandinavia!

I am Scandinavian, only Sweden, Denmark and Norway are part of Scandinavia, the Finns culture and language are completely different from us Scandinavians, sure many people in Finland talk Swedish but thats because they were part of the Swedish Kingdom once.

I think there was a lot more involved that led to russian victory though, such as the vast number of available russian troops, the inavailability of german supplies and troops to get to where they needed to be because of the climate they had to fight in and because of the distance. The boost in russian morale was a big difference from earlier when they were expected to basically run up and die.

He was a sniper in an Urban setting with bombings, infantry advances and other enemy opposition occuring continuosly in a confined space. Simo hid in mountains, snow , tree and rural settings, more open space = easier to perform

The Germans always had better snipers. This russian guy was blown up for propoganda purposes. The best snipers of the war came from Scandinavia though, probably because of their hunting lifestyle. Simo Häyhä was the best sniper of the century, from Finalnd.

@vito445 A large amount of Simo Häyhä's kills were with a submachine gun, but the majority of his kills were with his Mosin Nagant sniper rifle. Also Simo Häyhä mostly killed normal soldiers, and the soviets were easy killing from a distance since many times they were just running againts the enemy and had little or no combat training. It's not the AMOUNT of kills that makes a good sniper it is WHO they kill, like generals and officers. PS: Finland is not part of Scandinavia!

@vito445 he killed around 700, 200 of those were with his submachine so "only" 500 were killed with his sniper. the Soviet sniper Ivan M. Sidorenko also killed 500 but they were trained Wehrmacht soldiers, not untrained conscripts.
I am Scandinavian, only Sweden, Denmark and Norway are part of Scandinavia, the Finns culture and language are completely different from us Scandinavians, sure many people in Finland talk Swedish but thats because they were part of the Swedish Kingdom once.

@UberImperialGuard Some of the best troops were sent to fight finland because of how unsucessful they were every time, and Germany had conscripts too, just better equipemnt.
As far as Finland goes, you should go back and read my comment because i said GEOGRAPHICALLY part of Scandinavia. Culturally/linguisticly they are Finno-Ugric and can be very different from your average Nordic person.

@fitzy94ebc yes, it had a very significant impact. I think there was a lot more involved that led to russian victory though, such as the vast number of available russian troops, the inavailability of german supplies and troops to get to where they needed to be because of the climate they had to fight in and because of the distance. The boost in russian morale was a big difference from earlier when they were expected to basically run up and die.

@vito445 i agree germany had better trained and better equipped snipers. but don't downplay the role russian snipers in ww2 they had the largest sniper corp in the history of war in the darkest days of stalingrad the snipers stop germany form taking the city to the point the german couldn't even move above ground they had to burrow threw walls or move underground

@vito445 Actually, you are wrong. Simo Hayha's greatness was shown, but what you said is your opinion. The Soviets had better snipers, which is a FACT. Also, The Mosin Nagant M91/30 was proven to be the better rifle, both scoped and non scoped, over its counterpart, The Kar98. Vasily Zaytsev had a smililar lifestyle as Simo Hayha. He was born in the Ural mountains in Russia, where he learned to shoot from his grandfather, and hunted to live.

@vito445 Simo had the most military sniper kills in a war, but more is not better. Vasily had 225 kills, including 11 enemy ( german) sniper kills. He was a sniper in an Urban setting with bombings, infantry advances and other enemy opposition occuring continuosly in a confined space. The fact that he stayed alive, and was able to kill as many as he did in this sort of setting proves how skillfull he was. Simo hid in mountains, snow , tree and rural settings, more open space = easier to perform

@rossusaf Simo Häyhä killed 500 men in a freezing cold snowy forest with an old scopeless rifle and a rusty can of onions. He did this on his own and killed numerous teams of counter snipers. They carpet bombed the area just because of that one guy and he survived. He got shot in the head with an exploding bullet and survived, waking up on the very day the war ended. Actually that is not true, Simo had (only) bit over 200 confirmed kills (Both Finlands & USs news reported this two months after end of Winter War). 700 kills was made up propaganda.
What ever the case Soviets had by far the best snipers as a group (in terms of body count)

I bet a sniper rifle from that era probably wasn't capable of providing such momentum. Just saying it's physically possible.
