Shaolin originates from India the HIndu martial art of Kalaripayattu from south India became shaolin in Buddhism. Its also suprisingly that south Indians Kerala and Tamils are very connected to their old heritage where North Indians faced many changes when Mughals etc came thru cultural and language.

But kung fu isnt so great for street-fighting.

To be a good fighter, people should learn (only the basics of) Western boxing, Brazilian Jiu-jitsu, Filipino weaponry and Gatka.

But what is street fighting? Kung fu is good for something else- defending yourself in life and death situations or maybe fighting on the battlefield some 100s of years ago.

jaggijattah... i don't want to say you're wrong 100% but there are different types of kung fu that are very deadly for street fighting... The only reason people have a different approach on kung fu now is because they have been modernized and is more of a show (wushu)... real kung fu styles used for fighting were band in china when the new chinese government took over because they were afraid of rebellion...but there are still great kung fu school that exist...but very rare...
