Wanna know what annoys me in this game? The rapid fire is too slow! Gradius 3 on the SNES was much faster (I'm a lot more used to this game).
Still, Gaiden is a pretty solid game. And hard as f*ck.

It's truly epic how awful I am at Gradius Gaiden! T_T - I try SO damn hard aswell!
Stage 4 has been murdering me all evening, so I came over to YouTube to find some vids of it and here you are controlling both ships at once! XD

One thing that made my life a lot easier in stage 4 was memorizing an "easy" path through the stage. The part with the green laser-bastards can be particularly difficult if you take a hard path.

Noted. Nice one for that, that's exactly the problem I have, I get overwhelmed and boxed in as I don't have a 'routine', I'll study the route you take through. I'm going to keep at this over the weekend, I badly want to be able to play this game properly.

I think each player would have up to 4 options, not the screen? I don't know what it is. I think that makes up to 4 options.

It's similar to Gradius V, where the max # of options is 4 and you have to split them between the two ships.
The reason Option is still available is that you can steal options from your partner if you wish. E.g. in this vid the blue ship could've stolen a 3rd option for the boss, since the double + tailgun is more useful than the laser.

What version are you using? O_o I have Gradius Gaiden for PSX emulator, and we can easily have 8 options on screen... I think...
