Prices would go down due to basic supply/demand mechanics. With most similar products (like celery) it's simple. You get charged something for each of the following steps:

GROW + PROCESS + TRAFFIC + SELL + TAX = PRICE

When you make it illegal, you lose TAX, but you gain RISK at each stage of the production.

RISK (GROW + PROCESS + TRAFFIC + SELL) - TAX = PRICE

RISK causes operations to have to up security measures to make sure they can function. All of this run-around and secrecy costs the user more. Right now, the DEMAND is X. Once legalized, the DEMAND will still be roughly X. Weed is currently expensive because the DEMAND is so much higher than the SUPPLY. After all, who wants to work a job that can get you life in prison? This fear and extra work means reduced competition, and those that are left charge whatever they want.

Price would increase about 25 cents a joint tops from taxes, but overall prices would go down because it wouldn't be a black market item anymore. Plus you'd have the benefit of regulation, which would increase quality. And wouldn't it be nice to not be putting such a large portion of our population in prison for getting high and/or helping others do so? This would also take money out of the hands of real criminals that are currently profiting from it like gangbangers and Mexican cartels.
