@9:09 I just about died at the Edmund Fitzgerald reference. "They got into port and everyone was OK, they went out for lunch and felt better!" I never thought I'd say this, but thanks, Dad, for playing that grating, nonstop saga of a song so many times when I was a kid. It's now been worth it.
I recall that we only had rabibit ears and no cable when I was a kid, but by the time was in grade 9 the family moved once again and I made friends with a couple native american kids and their foster grand parents and they got a lot of channels and had the old godzilla movies on tv that I would watch, also war wagon night that I went to a few times to see a triple feature at a drive in theatre before all 3 of them went the way of the dinosaur and exitinct now.
@NitroGenesisTAS - it's to give you some time to meditate and reflect on the meaning of the film you just saw and the associated humorous commentary, and decide how much - not *if*, but how much - of an impact it will have on your life going forward, and your relationships with both strangers and loved ones.
Either that, or it's when the VHS tape ran out while transferring the movie to DVD, and I was too lazy to edit it out before uploading it. But that's highly unlikely.
@analogkid01 I agree with you here. After each MST3K I will reflect on it's deeper meaning. Afterwards, I ask myself WWCTD?, "What Would Crow and Tom Do?" Yes, after I let the love of Crow and Tom into my heart and accepted them as my saviors I am a changed man. Thank you for spreading the gospel, kind sir!
@analogkid01 Analogkid you are one funny dude. I always get your sarcasms. Now, if I were you, and I am... I would say " what sarcasms?" much to the enjoyment of all those so many strangers and ner do wells you most likely will never see in your entire life.
P.S this kind of movie attracts a wider range of potential by adding humor to your possible viewer base to people who other wise never viewed this type of movies.
It took me awhile to warm up to mystery science 3.000, but by adding humor in the mix, it covers a wider base range of potenial viewers on your channel that would not even watched this type of music other wise.
You are an MST3K god! Thank you so much for all of your postings! Excellent video quality and editing.... I imagine that takes no small amount of time, I appreciate your work!
Pearl & Maltin say they need a movie with Eric Roberts & Mickey Rourke to give Mike & the bots. Enter: The Expendables. That movie desperately needs the MST3K treatment.
So let me get this straight; The real monster of this movie is not in point of fact Gorgo, but is in actuality his mother... Henceforth I shall refer to this movie as "Gorgo's Mother" or perhaps "The Mother of Gorgo" instead of using the movie's actual title.
Is a circus attraction really worth all of this loss of life and property? I really think they just should have brought the "baby" to the mother and just ended this early. But what movie would have people do the smart thing.
@montyburns9991 It's a folk song called "The Swanee River" by the Christy's Minstrels. I don't think it's referencing anything happening on the screen, just the grandiose music. :)
Take away the cheesy stock footage segments an I actually have to say this is a pretty solid movie. It's easy to say it's a godzilla ripoff, but so is any monster movie, and it manages to do something good with the 90% of the movie that isn't just monster smashing stuff, the monster turns out to be a baby twist is pretty good.
Godzilla is a ripoff of The Beast From 20,000 Fathoms. So a person can't really fault a movie for being a Godzilla ripoff when Godzilla is itself guilty.
@WanderLink Honestly there's really a lot of grey area regarding what qualifies a ripoff. I'd say that Godzilla had enough thematic and cultural background that BF20kF didn't (Post War Japanese angst, Nuclear Weapon meditations) that the central principle of "Awakened Monster Wrecks Town" isn't the only real point in the movie. There was enough going on that it moves from "Ripoff" to "Adaptation". I think the same goes for Gorgo, it has distinctly British themes of Colonialism and...
@WanderLink ...and commodification of the natural world that it stands on its own. I think ripoff is a term better suited for things like Gamera which clearly had no goal other than to be "Like Godzilla, but we own the IP"
Godzilla is better than 20,000 Fathoms but it's still ripping it off. They're both about giant lizard monsters terrorizing a city meant to be an allegory for nuclear destruction. But sometimes a ripoff can be a great classic, look at A Fistful of Dollars, it's an unauthorized ripoff of Yojimbo. The silent film Nosferatu was an unauthorized ripoff of Bram Stoker's Dracula story. I calls it likes I sees it. They're ripoffs, it's not meant to be a demerit, it's just the truth.
One thing, I have to say about William Sylvester is that he had one of the most blank-faced faces I ever seen. Yeah, I seen him crack a smile a few times in some movies, like Devil Doll and Riding with Death, but most of the times his facial muscles are completely straight as an arrow, even in scenes that call for aggressiveness or anger.
@whoadude1959 I found humor in whoadude's comments. I think analogkid was caught on a bad hair day. I hope. I have such an iconic vision of analogkid.
@montyburns9999 - remember the crotchety, gun-wielding Ernest Hemingway look-alike from Attack of the The Eye Creatures? I'm like that, but younger and less skeptical about aliens.
