I love this type of music but watching the conductor always kills me. Not a single member of the orchestra is watching him; every eye is on their own music sheets.
@sjtom57 Actually, every member of the orchestra is watching him, in their peripheral vision. It's hard to explain if you've never played in a band like that. But those movements he makes syncs up with the rhythms in your mind and everything works out. Also he cues tons of parts that you just don't know about. It's impossible to play songs like this without a conductor.
The most incredible version of the Overture I've ever seen, fantastic performance, by all, but especially the conductor. His humor and passion are just staggeringly impressive.
!!-Muy Bueno-!!, FANTáSTiCa la Osaka Philharmonic, !-que ímpetu, y que ganas por "tocar" con esa alegría por la Buena Música en estas Sifonías-Maravillosas. How adorable is the conductor? He's so into the whole thing, you can even see his mouth moving at one point to match the sound of the orchestra. Of course, if I'd been in the audience, I'd have been doing the same thing, probably...
I think that for being able to create this kind of music, you have to love your nation and its history, or you just hate the world, and for that you can create something so strong as this piece
I am an American... and I know this was written by Tchaikovsky to celebrate Russia's victory over Napoleon... and I still think it's an incredibly patriotic song. For any country... why look at the negative, when you can look at the positive. Sheesh... some people's children...
@GermanDeath - I don't understand your comment. I know that you are making a negative comment toward me but I don't understand the intent or your point. And what does wikipedia have to do with anything? I'm talking about historical facts.
Everything is relative: I would think some French people would hate the song and some Russians would love it because of the story behind it.
But music can rise above it's original intent and become something more... THAT's ART!
@GermanDeath - I am just one person. But for me, 1812 Overture contains such passion and provides a musical portrayal of oppression, struggle, battle, and eventual victory. It doesn't matter the origin. Any citizen of any country that has fought oppression and won a victory can feel so moved. But you should know that... your country has a long proud history of fighting tyrrany and winning victories!
@HardikG121 I'm american and I think that too. every time someone leaves a comment saying "such a patriotic song" or "this makes me glad I'm american", i'm the one who has to say its about Russia's triumph over France
@MrRanchdressing1 i didn't even know what this song was about until high school. i honestly thought it was an American song; then i felt dumb :p regardless of its meaning, it's still so beautiful.
I have seen this performed so many times by so many diff orchestras..and I still think that it is, without a doubt, the sing most emotional piece of music ever writting by anyone or performed by any group. JUST AMAZING...always......
He probably just wrote a normal percussion score or a simplified one and expected that copies would be delivered to the cannon crews.
Actually, at the time this was composed, it was practically impossible to use cannons as intended. The technology then wasn't advanced enough. Even today it might be somewhat of a challenge to use real artillery in this.
How did Tchaikovsky write in the cannons on the music, did he just draw a picture of a cannon. Hahahahah, no but seriosly how did he write in the cannons.
@rib4m4 No, he just looks so. And the complete orchestra also. And the public as well. Lol. Nontheless, the best performance of the overture I've ever seen.
I must admit I get an extra kick out of seeing the Japanese execute (and attend) this performance. No freedom-loving culture (or individual, for that matter) can deny that this piece shakes the listener to their very core. To me, this symphony is the single most identifiable anthem of classical liberalism. The Star-Spangled Banner is up there, of course, but that's a more nationalist take on it (for us Americans).
