Mario 3 wasn't a dream, but it was all staged. Literally, it took place on a stage, the background hung from ropes, the stage ended when you went off stage, etc. So, Mario 2 wasn't the only "fake" adventure. So mario was imbrisoned in there that he wasnt able to wake up unless he beats wart. Also subcon is still reacable in the midair of mushroom kingdom
