Rene Kollo is one of the greatest German tenors ever, i would agree his breathing in this aria is not the best and he looks very uncomfortable at the end.
His studio recording of this demanding role is unsurpassed. never judge a great artist on one aria, behind most great singers the is at least 30 yrs of amazing performances
he was the best wagner tenor of his time! around the same time he performed in friedrichs RING at the german opera and was celibrated like years later in tanhäuser. he just certainly! has had a a pretty bad day on this one.. ;-)
just buy his rienzi recording under the same conductor hollreiser.. an amazing piece!
I've been doing some research on Mr. Rene Kollo and it seems he did have a beautiful sound early in his career, and not the wobbly vibrato that we hear today. Here is a very beautiful rendition of another aria when Mr. Kollo was younger on You Tube:
Rene Kollo Sings"Morgenlich leuchtend"-Richard WagnerDie Meistersinger von Nürnberg
Rene Kollo has no nuances, never utilized his mezza di voce, what a pig of a voice, a lot of oinks! This is a good example on how NOT to sing. After hearing Lauritz Mechior singing this piece it a couple of days ago...my ears are longing to hear him once more.
you won't be shot down, but I do not agree with you. ^^ He certainly sings not very soft or something comparable, it is certainly not my favourite piece of music, I don't know this singer, but (!) you cannot just reduce a singer to someone who doesn't know sth about singing. That is no shouting. That is still singing. In my opinion.
@6eeca i will look for this singer. i only listened to this opera out of curiosity. i watched a documentary on a. hitler and it mentioned this being his favourite opera.....i was hooked. now i must listen to gerd brenneis.
Where was the image of this concert acquired? Were you broadcast by the television of Germany?I want DVD of this commemoration [gara] in 1986!!!

al, respeto y tengo muchisima admiracion.

Well, he had not his best day, but even in this condition he was better in this role than most high paid singers would be these days .

You may want to hear this other You Tube version, truly magnificent singing.

This is a difficult aria. Wagner requires a lot of control (dynamics) not usually required of heldentenors.
