I am very wasteful. Every day I use throw away plates cups and silverware. Every couple of months I throw away my tv raido computer and cellphone and buy new ones. Every year I throw away all of the clothes in my closet and buy new ones. I just dont worry about consumerism. I have more important things to worry about then the environment like how am I going to get a high paying job to get myself out of dept.
@paultheuglydog I'm sorry to say, but you'll NEVER get out of dept. Our money system is one great lie, I suggest watching *The Arrivals/The American Dream*(last one in my favs) and I'm not just saying that to be a dick but what are we taught from day one? That our whole "goal" in life is to get a good enough job just to SURVIVE and after we wasted most of our life doing that we just fork all our money back to the system. Is this truly what "life" has to offer? F*** no, but ppl arent seeing it :/
Cool 12th grade effort! We're also making fun of consumerism with our "still using" channel. Pretending that using outdated technology is like drug use that needs to be cured. Because that's the message we get from ads and media. Gotta have the latest iPad, iPhone, etc. We're hoping that other youtubers will come and share their usage of "outdated" technology...
@SanityIsSuchADrag It's all relative, isn't it? When you are surrounded by overconsumption it makes your own behavior seem reasonable. My guess is a poor person in the third world would see you as a glutton. Nothing personal, but try to be a little more self-scrutinizing.
So, if you want to gripe about how there is so much crap on the shelves in stores, the culprits surround you everyday. If you want to complain about the prices of goods that you buy, and you want to find the person responsible, you need only look in the mirror.
The awesome part about free market is that people can make products that no one needs, but raises the standard of living. Products can only survive in the market when there is a demand for them. The prices for these products are determined by how many people want to buy the product, and how much of the product is available.
@paradoxGFX um, they are also affected by inflation, which happens when you have a fiat currency issued by a private corporation that creates nothing but debt in the end.
Lol. No one is a "victim" of consumerism. Go learn some things. Anyone that wants to think that they are a victim because some company's advertising team did their job right, and got them to buy a product needs to stop complaining, they made the decision to take their wallet out. People that make a product want money, so if you are willing to spend it on them, they will gladly take it. The awesome part about free market is that people can make products that no one needs...(continued)
i find it simply great, that we have here on youtube xxxx vids about consumerism about how fucked up our society is, how pointless our attitude and for sure all of that is true.. but what is this vids purpose? pointing at a big overwhelming problem and surrendering to it?

very good work Chris :-) I dont care what everyone else says or complains about this video...to me it makes a lot of sense because I'm studying about these issues...
yeah well that all true, but no matter how high level and expanded your way of thinking gets, deep down you still a human which equals an animal with all of the primitive animal needs such as reward system. there is no escaping that. unfortunately at this point most people function on the lower level, where simple pair of shoes is something that makes you happy and something to thrive for. it's silly but it is the way it is for now. i try to change for better higher thinking but it's hard.
consumerism is one of the most powerful tools for corporate propaganda and is a force capable of irreversibly robbing people of their true humanity. materialistic obsession is allowing the greed of the corporate world to change how people define what it is to be human. why waste people's time with this crap when you could be showing them how detrimental their own lifestyle is to the future of humanity - as dramtic as that may sound.
@menacingmatt The problem is, very few people care. I'm not saying only 10 people care because there are about...6 trillion people? A fraction of that are people who are aware of Consumerism's nasty underbelly. A smaller fraction of that are people who are opposed to Consumerism. It's mass apathy disguised as empathy. To be continued.
@menacingmatt pt. 2 The pressures most teens face are put there to keep them complacent and unaware of Consumerism's true intentions. Small children are no threat to the machine, due to their ignorance (another word that can be used is innocence). This gives Consumerism it's main food source. It's power supply. Take note that I'm reffering to Consumerism as not an action or a hive with billions of bees serving their queen, but a living creature itself. A monster. A disease. To be continued.
@menacingmatt pt 3 Let us take a look back 2-3 hundred years ago. In America, most if not all of the citizens were Catholic or Protestant. Any one who didn't belive in god was a minority and considered insane. This was mass religion. Now let's look at today. Religion still exists, only you don't have to worship god if you don't want to. Consumerism is the new mass religion. Only now it's grip on society is much bigger, much tighter, and much more destructive. To be continued.
what a pointless video. if ur trying to show people how destructive consumerism is, using words might be a better approach than just flashing random images with eerie techno music in the backround.
Everything is subjective. Try not to fight the message or the messenger, try to relate to the art. If you can't, go back to basics until you're ready.

at 2:20 the quick text shot doesn't make much sense. And neither does the random girl with her arms spread... also can anyone tell me how rubbish is paluting the earth?
The text that appears quickly isn't meant to be read. I you were meant to read it I would have made it last longer then 3 frames. The girl is playing a shinigami/death god. It's a symbolic metaphor, explained in the text that appears for longer then 3 frames.
As for the last part... have you seen rubbish dumps recently.... or ever?
you spelt polluting wrong for my last part lol and the girl is fucked up either way and dont think its necessary would have been just as good a message without her
How is she fucked up? The problem being, and this is from a film standpoint, that the film would not be conherent in a textual sense. The shinigami is the conflict in the story line, rather, it sets up the risk or the possibilty of loss. I could of put in images of decaying animals that have sufficated from pastics but I have a little more tact then that and opted for a symbolic metaphor instead...
capitalism led to the progress of mankind as we know it today... CONSUMERISM developed countries can consume more so they are developed... and now the World pays -.-
I know everyone stay home Monday. Keep the kids out of school, don't go to work, don't drive anywhere, don't buy anything, sit on our butts because we own everything already, hey it's the promised land. lol power to the republic
if all the people that say "we can't do anything about it" did something about it, we would have a revolution.
but that's half the problem of consumerism - laziness/convenience. the rest of it is greed - on behalf of individuals, but more so on behalf of multi-billion dollar corporations. do they need MORE money? when will people be happy with enough? do you really need that ipod? no. do people in the 3rd world need clean/safe water? food? housing? yes
i understand where your coming from but i dont think its laziness/convenience. i know whats happening i get myself wond up and then try too tell my friends and family what is really going on and they dont believe me they are inteligent people so what do we do?
oh yes we can! people in the western world don't need half the shit they have! people are just greedy and unsatisfied..they WANT stuff, but the don't NEED it.
"murder, crime, poverty, these things dont concern me, what concerns me is video games, the newest relese, getting a perfect score on the highest diffuculty on some game giving me a cheep thrill."
Hey, I know enough that the greatest fulfillment in life for the gaping hole of a human's heart is from the constant uplifting relationship from others, not material items that will grow stagnate through the effects of time. Just how much of a magnification a joke or piece of artwork has unless potentiated substantially from others who enjoy it rather than sharing it with only yourself? Our OS system is what society programs us to be, it isn't the only one, but materialism is
Great piece, very aesthetically pleasing. However, what is the solution you are proposing? Stop consumerism altogether? Or suggesting that people only buy what they need, in which case the deleterious effects of consumerism will simply be slowed, at the cost of our societal progress. Consumerism is inevitable, and we need it for progress. Instead of complaining about it, I think we must think of ways to compromise with it
We need to be more conscious consumers. We also need to implement the technology that we have discovered which would drastically reduce the impact of consumerism on the biosphere.
but what is 'progress'? In what sense do you mean? i think mankind's weakness is our need to 'progress'. we are never satisfied, we always strive for more. our problem is that we are in a perpetual state of dissatisfaction. there is no progress!
Interesting point. However, I believe your definition of progress is too narrow. You are focusing solely on the technological aspect of progression. I believe that progress is simply the trek from initial point A to the final goal point B. Therefore, any movement toward any goal can be considered progress. With this I return to my original thesis that, with every step of progress comes the need to consume. Consumerism is a necessary tool to get by in life and to achieve general progress.
I disagree when you say there is "no progress." As I stated in my other comment, progress is anything that is goal-oriented. It can be an overall progress toward a futuristic lifestyle in space or simply progress to finish homework. Therefore, we could try to limit progress in order to stop consumerism, however, to what degree would a limit in progress be sufficient? I believe consumerism is inevitable because it is a mandatory tool for efficiency no matter what we are progressing toward
Its just to late. we are finding out the result of our consumer lifestyle just now. between hawaii and japan, there is 100 miljon tons plastic waste in the ocean. thats thanks to the big corperations who rap their products in plastic. the results will be devastating for all mankind.there is absolutly nothing we can do to save the earth. thats the truth.
This is so sad that the marketeers instead of them coming out of their office and onto the streets to analyse consumer spending that they want to put a chip in your head... to track the sales. So sad.
This was a wonderfully edited film, whoever did this was very talented; the music was great too. I agreed with the initial "Consumerism = Bad" message (who wouldn't agree with it), but towards the end as the video became less abstract, the overall theme of the movie turned - for lack of a better phrase - "pretty gay." The theme turned into "Are you a victim [of consumerism]?" Honestly, WTF is that? Consumerism is easily avoidable, and creates no victims. People create their own needy problems.
Thankyou. Yeah, the film was deliberately split into two sections, the second half dealing with people. I don't agree with you that it became less abstract, but I'm bias because I made it. However I see where you're coming from. Though I do agree with the victim part, however, I when I made this I wasn't overly informed on the topic.
Is consumerism the problem, or is media control/mass (mis)information and apathy towards politics and educated democracy the problem? People can only be distracted by their toys for so long, especially when people trying to wake them up bombard them with pictures of dead Iraqis. And consumerism? We're all guilty of that, and yet we know there's a problem. The problem lies in how we think, and what we decide, and how hard we're willing to fight to gain representation in our governments.
They preach low self-esteem to make you buy. Their whole goal is to make you want what they have. If we only bought what we needed or couldn't make ourselves within our communities, if we had self control and self-esteem, most of these large businesses would go under in an instant. They manufacture a need in us that only they--conveniently--can fulfill.
There is a fundamental flaw in the system's inception. We have to fundamentally change the paradigm.
i quite agree with omar, without mass media exploitation of consumer products and the usual "youre not quite complete, not quite whole, or perfect without __________" type of dissemination its become tons easier to let your inner wants for merchendise become swindled. it is evidenced by everysingle commercial you see on the tv screen. p.s. song is amazing. jono's an aquaintance of mine. if you dont mind id like to show this to him.
i'm kinda confused what the reference to shinignami (angel of death ) is releveant to consumerism although yeh what someone else said about the anime japanese thingo...
its not that we're blind, its that we're ignorant. we all knw what kind of labor goes into our xbox 360s and nikes. we just dont care. thats the real problem.
you're a friend of a friend. i think i got here through your dev.art page. you seem to like the word shinigami is there any chance you're a fan of Bleach?
I'm never seen an episode of Bleach ever, but I probably would be a fan :P
More a fan of Japanese culture. But two instances that inspired it's use. One was my friend Kath said it to me at school and an episode of Naruto oddly enough.
I can see the point you are trying to make but if you remove all the fancy computer graphic, all you have are plain mall shots with no power in them and people walking down the street. There's so much more you could have done with this subject.
I hate to sounds like a broken record. But yes, that was sort-of the point. This is was actually more of a test of my skills in computer graphics then actual propaganda.
Though you do have a point, but I will disagree in that: if you've seen the movie "Stranger Than Fiction" if you removed the cool graphics from that, you'll be left with a IRS agent doing paperwork. Or better put, boring.
I dont know. I think you failed to make an impact with your vid. The form was there, but there was little to no content although there is so much to be said on the subject. Look up Century of the Self on google videos. 4 hours of documentary covering the birth and evolution of consumerism.
Although there is much to be said. In the confines of the assignment and style I chose a depth that you speak is practically impossible. So I merely chose there or for points and explored them artistically. The points are there they just need to be searched for.
"If the citizens themselves devote their life to matters of trade, the way will be opened to many vices; each one will work only for his own profit, despising the public good; the cultivation of virtue will fail since honor, virtue's reward, will be bestowed upon the rich. Thus, in such a city, civic life will necessarily be corrupted." -De Regno, St. Thomas Aquinas
content is lame, uneducated, liberal rhetoric. you probably read your first issue of "adbusters", blew your liberal load, and got the fever to change the world.
Because you clearly have some "issues" I'll be kind. Yes, Anamorph was an influence, but so was another 6 or so experimental pieces. Surprise! there is no original styles left. As for the rest, if you took 5 seconds from your god forsaken life to read. This was a propaganda assignment (you might wan to research that one) for grade 12 Film. Of course the ideals are going to slack. I was 17 and had other shit to do!
But that's for your kind words, because your so in tune with film making I'm sure you appreciate the work that went into this with all the films you've made. Opps, you haven't!
Can you imagine lefties doing away with all their toys? They just don't like it when others get what they have. Forgive us unwashed masses for wanting the same things you get, you snob!!
Big diff btw wanting a few consumer items and insane consumerism. Google richistan article on the truly rich. Starts at $10M. Below that is only "affluent".
More preaching from hypocrites who will NEVER practice what they preach. Does anyone see an eery similarity between the preachers of socialism (Barbra Streisand, Danny Glover, Michael Moore) and the preachers against homosexuality (Ted Haggard, James West, James McGreevey)?? They are all cut from the same clothe, total hypocrites!! And both stand on a stage to spew their bile!
cth1729, that was the entire point, a socially and ecologically destructive lifestyle characterized by irrational obsession with meaningless spectacles is our "norm", things don't just "happen", we live in a social system that is invisible at first glance much like water to a fish, maybe you should take a closer look
adhesivesynergy: Perhaps I expressed myself too strongly before. The INTENDED message is clear enough. I'm just saying that the subject was treated in a simplistic way. The end message -- buying too much stuff equals death -- was merely asserted, not demonstrated to us in a more meaningful way. The piece was more about computer graphics and editing than substance.
The editing was, in lots of places, skilful and artistic, but for me, the end result was too much sizzle and too little steak.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Is someone angry that the "unwashed masses" can get the same things at Walmart that the elite trust fund brats can get at a french boutique? Leftists are nothing but rich snobs who cannot stand the idea of everyone being equal.
SelmaMiami, leftists WANT equality. and leftists are anything but rich! if they were rich, why would they be against the rich? leftists are often people from the working class who are certainly NOT rich!
You are not a very bright person. If you have ever read history books on socialism like I have, you would know there has NEVER been a working class or poor person in history to advocate for socialism. Karl Marx, Che Guevera, Pol Pot, Stalin, they are all trust fund brats!!! Even the Dems have more money than the GOP today. Open you eyes!
Excellent, fantastic editing & graphics especially. A tripod could have made it twice as enjoyable though, & I'm sure I don't have to tell you how much time it could have saved you in all that tracking you must have had to do for the graphics. Other than that though it's a great concept and executed very well, avant garde yet not pretentious.
Buy MORE, go into MORE debt or else if you stop buying then you can not be controlled. And without the ability to control you what would your government do? Your purchasing is helping poor people all over the world find jobs.

you spelt polluting wrong for my last part lol and the girl is fucked up either way and dont think its necessary would have been just as good a message without her
olek101 3 years ago
.... that was hard to read.... anyway....
How is she fucked up? The problem being, and this is from a film standpoint, that the film would not be conherent in a textual sense. The shinigami is the conflict in the story line, rather, it sets up the risk or the possibilty of loss. I could of put in images of decaying animals that have sufficated from pastics but I have a little more tact then that and opted for a symbolic metaphor instead...

if all the people that say "we can't do anything about it" did something about it, we would have a revolution.
but that's half the problem of consumerism - laziness/convenience. the rest of it is greed - on behalf of individuals, but more so on behalf of multi-billion dollar corporations. do they need MORE money? when will people be happy with enough? do you really need that ipod? no. do people in the 3rd world need clean/safe water? food? housing? yes

Our OS system is what society programs us to be, it isn't the only one, but materialism is
Yggdrasill4 3 years ago 2
the path most humans made sadly.
Yggdrasill4 3 years ago
Great piece, very aesthetically pleasing. However, what is the solution you are proposing? Stop consumerism altogether? Or suggesting that people only buy what they need, in which case the deleterious effects of consumerism will simply be slowed, at the cost of our societal progress. Consumerism is inevitable, and we need it for progress. Instead of complaining about it, I think we must think of ways to compromise with it
sumokiller 3 years ago
We need to be more conscious consumers. We also need to implement the technology that we have discovered which would drastically reduce the impact of consumerism on the biosphere.
JonnyMuzz 3 years ago
but what is 'progress'? In what sense do you mean? i think mankind's weakness is our need to 'progress'. we are never satisfied, we always strive for more. our problem is that we are in a perpetual state of dissatisfaction. there is no progress!
trank31337 3 years ago 2
Interesting point. However, I believe your definition of progress is too narrow. You are focusing solely on the technological aspect of progression. I believe that progress is simply the trek from initial point A to the final goal point B. Therefore, any movement toward any goal can be considered progress. With this I return to my original thesis that, with every step of progress comes the need to consume. Consumerism is a necessary tool to get by in life and to achieve general progress.
sumokiller 3 years ago
I disagree when you say there is "no progress." As I stated in my other comment, progress is anything that is goal-oriented. It can be an overall progress toward a futuristic lifestyle in space or simply progress to finish homework. Therefore, we could try to limit progress in order to stop consumerism, however, to what degree would a limit in progress be sufficient? I believe consumerism is inevitable because it is a mandatory tool for efficiency no matter what we are progressing toward
sumokiller 3 years ago
Its just to late. we are finding out the result of our consumer lifestyle just now. between hawaii and japan, there is 100 miljon tons plastic waste in the ocean. thats thanks to the big corperations who rap their products in plastic. the results will be devastating for all mankind.there is absolutly nothing we can do to save the earth. thats the truth.

moneymagnetelizabeth 3 years ago
This was a wonderfully edited film, whoever did this was very talented; the music was great too. I agreed with the initial "Consumerism = Bad" message (who wouldn't agree with it), but towards the end as the video became less abstract, the overall theme of the movie turned - for lack of a better phrase - "pretty gay." The theme turned into "Are you a victim [of consumerism]?" Honestly, WTF is that? Consumerism is easily avoidable, and creates no victims. People create their own needy problems.
adeadlysniper 3 years ago
Thankyou. Yeah, the film was deliberately split into two sections, the second half dealing with people. I don't agree with you that it became less abstract, but I'm bias because I made it. However I see where you're coming from. Though I do agree with the victim part, however, I when I made this I wasn't overly informed on the topic.
mufty101 3 years ago
Is consumerism the problem, or is media control/mass (mis)information and apathy towards politics and educated democracy the problem? People can only be distracted by their toys for so long, especially when people trying to wake them up bombard them with pictures of dead Iraqis. And consumerism? We're all guilty of that, and yet we know there's a problem. The problem lies in how we think, and what we decide, and how hard we're willing to fight to gain representation in our governments.
OmarAlQaseer 3 years ago
They preach low self-esteem to make you buy. Their whole goal is to make you want what they have. If we only bought what we needed or couldn't make ourselves within our communities, if we had self control and self-esteem, most of these large businesses would go under in an instant. They manufacture a need in us that only they--conveniently--can fulfill.
There is a fundamental flaw in the system's inception. We have to fundamentally change the paradigm.
xnostromo 3 years ago
i quite agree with omar, without mass media exploitation of consumer products and the usual "youre not quite complete, not quite whole, or perfect without __________" type of dissemination its become tons easier to let your inner wants for merchendise become swindled. it is evidenced by everysingle commercial you see on the tv screen. p.s. song is amazing. jono's an aquaintance of mine. if you dont mind id like to show this to him.

I can see the point you are trying to make but if you remove all the fancy computer graphic, all you have are plain mall shots with no power in them and people walking down the street. There's so much more you could have done with this subject.
godessceline 4 years ago
I hate to sounds like a broken record. But yes, that was sort-of the point. This is was actually more of a test of my skills in computer graphics then actual propaganda.
Though you do have a point, but I will disagree in that: if you've seen the movie "Stranger Than Fiction" if you removed the cool graphics from that, you'll be left with a IRS agent doing paperwork. Or better put, boring.
mufty101 4 years ago
I dont know. I think you failed to make an impact with your vid. The form was there, but there was little to no content although there is so much to be said on the subject. Look up Century of the Self on google videos. 4 hours of documentary covering the birth and evolution of consumerism.
zenboy3000 4 years ago
Although there is much to be said. In the confines of the assignment and style I chose a depth that you speak is practically impossible. So I merely chose there or for points and explored them artistically. The points are there they just need to be searched for.

"If the citizens themselves devote their life to matters of trade, the way will be opened to many vices; each one will work only for his own profit, despising the public good; the cultivation of virtue will fail since honor, virtue's reward, will be bestowed upon the rich. Thus, in such a city, civic life will necessarily be corrupted." -De Regno, St. Thomas Aquinas

stylistically a rip off of wddg's "anamorph".
content is lame, uneducated, liberal rhetoric. you probably read your first issue of "adbusters", blew your liberal load, and got the fever to change the world.
thecory123 4 years ago
Because you clearly have some "issues" I'll be kind. Yes, Anamorph was an influence, but so was another 6 or so experimental pieces. Surprise! there is no original styles left. As for the rest, if you took 5 seconds from your god forsaken life to read. This was a propaganda assignment (you might wan to research that one) for grade 12 Film. Of course the ideals are going to slack. I was 17 and had other shit to do!

Stupid. All it was was images of people doing normal, everyday things, and the message "Buying too much stuff = death!"
cth1729 4 years ago
cth1729, that was the entire point, a socially and ecologically destructive lifestyle characterized by irrational obsession with meaningless spectacles is our "norm", things don't just "happen", we live in a social system that is invisible at first glance much like water to a fish, maybe you should take a closer look
adhesivesynergy 4 years ago 2
adhesivesynergy: Perhaps I expressed myself too strongly before. The INTENDED message is clear enough. I'm just saying that the subject was treated in a simplistic way. The end message -- buying too much stuff equals death -- was merely asserted, not demonstrated to us in a more meaningful way. The piece was more about computer graphics and editing than substance.
The editing was, in lots of places, skilful and artistic, but for me, the end result was too much sizzle and too little steak.
cth1729 4 years ago
i think claiming that it's an 'abstract' video is a poor explanation for a well-intended but ultimately confused and diluted message.
