I saw them live in Detroit opening for The Offspring years ago and I thought they were a better live band than The Offspring was and at the time I had never heard them before.

As someone who has seen MAdM perform many times, she is MUCH better in small venues/little clubs than in these big arena shows. It is wonderful being in a small space (i.e., as opposed to a huge space) with her and the amazing musicians who comprised her band, in 04 and on the current tour. She owns the room.

Her band is really good. I wish I could say she was. I really wanted to like her after hearing this song (the album version) but this...it's sloppy. I mean, they've got choked notes in the first thirty seconds! She can't seem to keep her voice steady! She's good in the studio, and I liked her bass work with Smashing Pumpkins, but I would be embarassed to put the video on the internet if I had played that show. And she's been playing for what, 20 years? Come on Melissa. You can do better.

It's hard to be objective really. Most of us never been on tour, singing night after night in festivals surrounded by smoke where you have to scream when you talk.

She has this sweet angel voice that can't handle this kind of tour I think. She's a background singer (formally) and a kick ass bass player. I'll bought any record she put out but I won't pay for the show lol.

you've never been in a band i take it. i have, and take it from me, there is always a big difference between studio and live. it can't be helped. A) in the studio, mistakes can be fixed. live, that's not an option. yes, they are human, so they make mistakes. B) when you sing songs loud and nightly, your voice will eventually sound like a bowl of rice crispies, snap crackle pop. C) I'd like to see you do better.

@gjvmnd you've never been in a good band I take it. I've been in a few, and I'm well aware of the difference between studio and live. A) Good musicians doesn't fix mistakes in the studio, they learn to not make them. That's why good bands sound almost the same live. B) Yes, singing the songs over and over will wear you out. But if you warm up properly and you aren't screaming, it won't hurt the voice much. C) You will when I post some videos. Better than this isn't hard.

Ad hominem isn't really helpful here. I know my vids are terrible. People kept saying I needed something on youtube, I grabbed a camera and threw those together. That doesn't make me wrong. It also doesn't make you right.

Look, you can hear the band's off. You know it. Did you play shows badly and say "Sorry, folks, but I'm great in the studio"? I assume no. You did your best to play right, and if you made a mistake covered it. She didn't. I don't see a reason to carry on a flame war over this.

@gjvmnd Just because everyone makes mistakes doesn't mean that when you make mistakes that's fine and dandy because you couldn't help it. That view undermines everything we do. It's a constant struggle to perfect the songs. I've only been playing live for all of maybe two years and already I generally won't play a song live until I know I can actually play it well. Miss der Maur has so much more experience that she should she better than some random kid, right? Yes. Yes, she should.

also, too much of the highs/mids up on her chan in the PA - I have that prob sometimes, and sometimes they have too much on the lows and I sound like I'm in a tunnel - The natural tone of the voice doesn't always come through.
