  • NIce sounding kit here's got there! The high hats were a little tinny but that's just my preference :) Overall pretty sweet!

  • More Like Steve GOD

  • I love Gadd so much, but the groove of Bernard Purdie is so heavily embedded in me sometimes i find it hard to listen to anyone else even if they are god-like *sigh*

  • Steve Gadd? Should be Steve God.

  • Steve Gadd? Should be Steve God.

  • brutal trip

  • steve mostly uses a 22X14

  • What size is the bass drum?

  • See more of Steve Gadd on SoulDrummers . com.

  • Mr. Gadd, showing us the basics. Thanks.

  • im a young, but experianced player, trying to get in touch with my drumming roots... i watched the aja drum fill and was extremely disappointed, but this? incredible. not to mention, i was first going to gripe about his snare sound, but it grows on one, doesnt it?

  • Gadd has a certian amount of untangible quality to him unlike other players that have achieved the same level of success. The first that comes to mind is Terry Bozzio. Althought you couldn't get farther apart in terms of style and sound, unlike Bozzio and his signature 32nd note triplet split between the snare and cymbals, Gadd is able to keep his militaristic style sounding fresh and alive after many years.

  • i'm new to drumming...and it becomes immediately obvious that this dude is a master of masters...and I love that fat slightly tubby snare sound.

  • anyone know what ride steve was using?

  • There are a lot of stories about cymbals through the years.

Dizzy had a china that every drummer HAD to use.

Kenton had a 26" ride that every drummer HAD to use.

Papa Jo Jones had a mystery cymbal. He could make THAT cymbal SING. He passed it on to many drummers saying if they could make the cymbal sound good when they played it, they could keep it. If not they had to give it back. NO drummer could make it sound good when they played it, but Papa made it sound incredible. It's all about TOUCH!

  • he plays zildjians cause hes a fucking ganster

  • grade 3 haircut :p

  • One Of The Best Drummers EVER!!... Who's With Me?...

  • I wish there were some notations of these ride snare bass hihat patterns he 's doing here...Tiiiiight!!

  • Steve can make even an out of tune snare drum sound good.

  • The 8 people who disliked this video don't understand 1% of it.

  • I just love his Hi-hat!

  • he just makes it look easy...i think "oh i can do this"

    ...but then i cant....

  • Hah Haaaah. What can u say to taste and groove like that.Tha Master I think.

  • See more of Steve Gadd on SoulDrummers . com

  • He plays every note like his life depened on it. He is such a classy player and music maker and he is just amazing in every way on the drums. Gadd is good.

  • master !!

  • its so damn jazzy

  • Mr.Taste

  • Damn impossible to count along with it.

  • Sublime.

  • finesse #FTW

  • So musical, you can almost hear the melody over it

  • @schuylersemeniuk exactly, and it sounds colorful.

    What a great jam

  • Most bop drummers tune his drums high, like bongos-classic 12,14,18,14 kit, with both heads on bass drum.Bass drum sounds-boing,boing.But steve tune his drums low,and they sounds like ethnic drums, and he play all styles, including bop.Jazz musicians dont like that, but steve sounds fantastic to my ears!!!!!!!

  • he's an amazing drummer but that snare sounds like crap, and he needs to take the blankets out of his bass it sounds like he's hitting a pillow, not a drum

  • steve gadd is alll about sensitivity.

  • wat hudson movie is this. i dont think it is the master series?? i want it now!!!!

  • the dvd was bundled with gadds zildjian

    cymbal kit.

  • BLA!!!! una emerita merda!

  • Travis Barker could play this with more feel! Just kidding :P Steve is crazy perfect. Especially when you consider his era and all those he worked with. I don't know what I can say about him that hasn't been said multiple times before. I'll say my brother went to Berklee (Boston) with Duke, Steve's son. How cool is that?

  • Does anyone know where to get the full clip?

I noticed that he only finished talking about a cymbal before his demonstration.

Steve Gadd is my idol in drumming!!!!

  • how organic is his groove...gotta love him. TASTEFUL.

  • I LOVE UNCLE STEVE !! ! ! ! ! ! !!

  • dang hottt symbals, how much are those things

  • 18" K Session Ride - I just got one. A new one in under $300. not too bad.

  • His Session Hats run a little over 400 a pair, but I just bought some, and believe me, they are with every penny. Unbeatable sound IMO.

  • 1:22- beautiful!

  • Steve Gadd RULES

  • bonzo1989 do you have a transcription?

highly interested. I have a transcription of his youtube hit "basic paradiddle groove" if you wanted to exchange?

    thanks.

  • @daltonh1 oh man ive been looking for that! Im affraid i have nothing to offer in return though :(

  • I wanna be Gadd for just one day.

No wait... I can't have that.

  • ahh he needs to include some transcriptions i dont have all day to listen to these things twenty times through! Snare sounds dry and thats how he likes his chicken too so suck it . His sound, hes Steve Gadd

  • i love his feeling.

  • that snare tuning has been on thousands of records! and as far as the heighth of the ride, it's up there so that it can be crashed on as well. Etwizzy99, you have the right to your opinion, but until you've played on as many records and gigs as Gadd, keep the negative stuff to yourself.

  • I don't like his tuning.

  • He's got old school tom sound with new school cymbals, I love it.

  • I'm specifically talking about his snare. Sounds dead.

  • Your in over your head on this

Etwizzy99 ...RESPECT! Actually, with the crowd that follows Gadd and his super expanded career...you will get eaten alive here, ...last chance...if you don't want to apologize for being opinionated about the father of modern drumming then shut up...get a grip!

  • AMEN!

  • zildjian is sexy. badass haircut.

  • I wonder how He can hold the left hand so at the end of the stick , inspite that having this loose and crispy touch? He also are among few in his age having the snare tuned medium low.. often guys in his age pitch up the snare for jazzy occations.! He´s great.. living legend for shure!

  • Comment removed

  • Damn! He is great. I wonder if his arm ever gets tired though, that cymbal is up high.

  • steve gadd is a serious master!

  • i love the sound of his ride :O

  • Oh my gadd, he is the man

  • OH GADD

  • GOD the zildjan special K dark symbols are the symbols ever!!!!

Also check out 1:07 look at the floor tom, and notice that small dark spot on the skins. He's so frickin precise!!!! That's amazing!!! If Bruce Lee played drums he would be Steve Gadd, cause Steve Gadd is the definition of "be like water, my friend"

  • That's not so hard, you just have to know your drums real well. I have those. But Steve Gadd rules. Best drummer ever.

  • Yes, and not only be like water, but have "emotional content" that is something that steve gadd has plenty of, possibly even more than what bruce lee did in his fighting. But it's easier to be emotional with drums than when you're beating the crap out of someone I suppose. So are you a JKD guy?

  • @whenshaltthoubebetta

so true! even when gadd plays with a laid-back feel, he's precise. he can play "precisely lazy". what an undeniable sense of groove

  • @whenshaltthoubebetta Hey man, I concur...twice. Good call re Bruce Lee

BTW for the record its spelt "cymbal"

  • @lildrummerboy52 lol whoops my bad.

  • @lildrummerboy52 BTW for the record its spelled "spelled"

  • @SHWATE hehe cheers mate. good call my bad

  • @SHWATE Boom headshot

  • @SHWATE that's fucking awesome hahaha

  • @whenshaltthoubebetta

    I agree to both.

  • oh man i love that snare.

  • Yikes, man! Gadd, lord man! Geee, Gadd dude...!

  • i feel like his bass drum tone diminishes the overall sound of his swing, but still this is inspiring everytime i watch

  • Notice that his unwavering focus is on that ride cymbal. Booyeah.

  • yeah. he has to watch the cymbals all the time. cos he cant play them if he doesent.

  • LOOOOOL ahahah

  • I want to gush and gush - he blows me away - so fluid and graceful...

What i really want to just say is: the Doctor is in.

    Love this man.

  • just f ing awesome!i will never play like this!

  • Really Hot ! ! ! !

  • What a hoss.

  • I don't know what "hoss" means, but I agree.....

  • It means "badass ma fucka".

  • want k customs, unfortunately cant afford k customs

  • tasteful...

  • Tasteful playing man.....love his style........

  • speaking of the k's, i recently bought a 21 special dry from a pawn shop. didnt get a chance to play it before i bought it. at first it scared me, but now i love that cymbal. nothing else has been put on the stand since!

  • k or k custom?

  • k custom

  • trad drummer!!!

  • I could listen to this over and over for hours

  • Amazing! I do prefer Zildjian A over K or Z all day, any day! especially 14" New beat hats and Ping Ride! Absolute best!

just my opinion, we all have our faves.

  • thats exactly what i have............

  • good choice!!that's what i have also...

  • man thats why Zildjian Ks are my favourite cymbals..

  • Gadd has the remarkable ability to hide the downbeat. Unless you are counting along the whole time, you don't hear the 'One' like you do with so many other drummers.

  • 2:11 ~ 2:15

    Wow!!

  • He bends rhythm and time feel so well without ever breaking the tempo or time itself. True drumming class from Mr. Gadd!

  • steve gadd's jazz playing sounds like a smoother elvin jones

  • is that a double bass i see?

  • No, but he's playing with a double pedal sometimes

  • secondo me la tecnica di questo uomo nn è normale ...il bello è che nn fa cose difficilissime ma è efficacissimo cn quello che inserisce

  • La risposta è semplice :D è Steve Gadd!!

  • Music is easy sometimes, hard sometimes,....who cares, point is THIS IS GREAT!

  • man i cant even begin to know that shit. i hear pieces of stuff but the way he puts it all together. the moment i hear 1 thing hes doin some other crazy thing

  • Very nice! Thanks

  • i wanna be like mike=gadd

  • Gadd is good all the time..and all the time Gadd is good..

  • My master.

  • he's amazing at this style

  • Soooo smooth!

  • application of rudiments.

  • Technical mastery. Only someone who understands drums can truly appreciate how darn good Gadd really is.

  • Gadd is influential. All that ghost note triplet stuff has had a great impact on modern drummers.

  • its a Zildjian 18" K Custom Session Ride developed with Steve Gadd. Hope this helps clear things up a little.

  • Damn, this is a good clip. Where is this from - where can I see more?

  • i don't care who you are, you're not going to play it that butter

  • Comment removed

  • WOW the break at 0:23!!

  • Gadd is in the top 5 greatest all around drummers of all time!

  • HE'S THE BOSS. HE'S THE BEST.

  • nn me piace proprio pe niente

  • Molto meglio di tanti "puristi" del jazz che non tengono il tempo "nemmen pagati" ....(anzi spesso pagati !) ....

  • anybody know what kind of k cymbal he has on his very far right?

  • kinda looks like a 18" crash ride?

  • yup, it's his signature zildjian k ride 18 "!

  • nah, gadd never uses crash rides.

  • I love steve gadd but swing aint his thing. watch elvin J, tony w, or jack d for straight ahead swing.

  • are you kidding me .. besides this video have you ever heard steve gadd play jazz before ... he swings like a mutha

  • Agreed. I do enjoy his swing and think that he does a great job at giving it his own unique feel but I would much rather listen to his funk.

  • His swing is an acquired taste. It's heavy and is the exact opposite of a more typical swinger like, say, Roy Haynes. But you know what, he still gets hired to play jazz all the time.

Also, it's worth noting that he started out playing swing -- bebop and rhythm-n-blues -- long before he ever did any rock, funk or latin.

  • Yeah, this is kinda an R&B players swing. It comes out a little heavy - not criticising, it's his sound is all.

Bill Stewart, Billy Martin, Brian Blade are a few newer guys who have a more Retro swing.

    Nothing but love for Gadd.

  • Yessssssssssssss

  • Great drum track...I think I'll use it

  • Nothing triggered it's muffling you see-he just uses a low snare tuning.Look fellas this is just a makeshift ,set up the mics and play situation-no eq on anything-its why the cymbals sound like they do.Those same cymbals will sound dynamite run through all the studio jazz-this is just raw sound.Educational technique study only here...

  • the ride sounds prettey good, just too much stick definition in the sound. the other ones arent very nice soundin tho

  • I don't like his snare either

  • every 1 who dis's him is 2 full of themselves... so just fuck off.... seriously

  • The snare sounds weird because it is triggered.. so are all his toms and kick.. you can see the triggers.

  • (TO Dmanm85)

    WOW

can you not CLEARLY see that its black tape thats on his snare, just as steve gadd has done on his drums throughout his entire career.

And if you knew something about recording, you would notice that those are mics on his drums.

  • the cymbals sond good to me.

  • so great

  • The snare drum sounds weird.

  • its out of tune

  • how about you develop your own set of custom snare drums and cymbals then.

  • lol

  • I agree, the cymbals sound horrible....

I myself use a couple of custom K series cymbals, but these just sound shitty... to my ears anyway =/

  • zildjian k customs are awesome cymbals. however, some of them are really dry and antique sounding and meant specifically for jazz. however, many rock drummers use them. its all in your ear... i personally like the Sabian HH series which are basically revamped k customs.

  • Why are you so defensive about these cymbals? I don't like the sound of them, I love the sound of many Zildjian cymbals, just not these.

How am I an "ass" for having a personal preference? You sir, are the ass.

  • yes he is

  • is doing diddles between the snare and kick?

  • yes. this is chopped full of diddles and i am a diddle freak. i love it.

  • MAESTROOOOOOOOO

  • you guys are crazy, that ride is sweet. Crisp dry and dark. That ride would be perfect for jazz or fusion. May not be best ride for rock, but it sounds sweet.

  • I like that ride. I like a dry ride. I HATE ping rides. Perfect example of what I like is in the Dave Weckl drum solo vid. The one where he looks like Jerry Seinfeld.

  • i'm very impresed by the he sings & he does so with all his heart

  • he's great, just not a fan of those cymbals. yuck.

  • Yah you're right, top of the line Zildjian Ks suck. Its not like most of the best drummers on earth use them or anything. Ass

  • great... the today's drum cenario have to say "tank you" every day for him... from brazil. Vic

  • Steve must've went to the same plastic surgeon as Burt Reynolds...

  • I totally agree...bought one and it sounded like poo poo...don't know why. just not a good cymbal. Even in his demo for these...they don't sound good at all.

  • got to agree. Apparently he has a strange preferance for incredibly dry cymbals with pretty much zero sustain.cant say im a fan

  • he makes that one sound ok....probably the best in the bunch and he is well....s. gadd

  • same for at 1:00

  • does anyone know what he is doing at 0:23? I'm guessing he switched to a 16 note rudiment with accents and ghosting. Any ideas? I'd really like to learn that, it's sexy like his paradiddle groove.

  • go through the ted reid syncopation book and play triplet ghosts in between beats, while playing the written notes as a ride hit, there... $25 please

  • groovy MF.

  • Is there a drummer on youtube that shows total independence

of both left +right sticking , meaning the left hand is playing a different rhythm to the right at the same time. Please give me some names
