when I was young my father taught me to drive in a Land Rover... only the people who have ever had a land rover would understand the feeling of having a new one... no matter where you drive it, you always will look proper...!!!
@daverave2204 Yes it is I should get a Defender just because they played this song, only problem is it's not being sold in America cause it has no airbags
A Land Rover is a car I've always wanted. I can think of no motoring experience more rewarding than buying an old Landy 90 or 110, restoring it and then driving it through a ridiculous off-road course knowing it wouldn't miss a beat. Over 60 years and still the best off-roader around.
i owned both a jeep wrangler, and a defender, the jeep took time to to eventually like, only smiled off road, i just bought my defender 3 days ago, love at first site, and it puts a smile on my face everytime i get near it :D
I had a 93 model 110 TrayBack with bilstein suspension, maxi-drive axels etc, it was better than the best LandCruiser i have ever owned, I wish i still had it.
@crossbones64 They cant sell them there any more, since 98, cos they have no airbags. but sure who needs airbags in a land rover, ull go over whatever u hit anyway :P
@canthinkofne Don't know where you're from but here in New Zealand I can go into the dealership and look at 2010 Discoverys... (and I love doing that haha)
@crossbones64 You can thank the Department of Transportation for that. Land Rover imported the Defender in 1993, 1994, 1995, and 1997, then stopped. Why you ask? The DOT required all vehicles to have Airbags starting in 1998, plus some other side impact requirements. Rather than mucking up the whole design of the Defender that has lasted over 60 years, Land Rover basically gave the middle finger to the US Government.
When you can show me a japcrap rustbucket or a yanktank numbbus that will start on the button and pass it's MOT every time no problems at 60 years old then I'll consider changing my mind. Until then; and I consider it highly unlikely to happen, I'll stick to my Land Rovers. Tried jeep, tried mitsubishi tried Toyota......all broken/useless. Sorry but Land Rover is best by a mile. It may be broken too sometimes but at least I can fix it without a bloody laptop! No comparison and yes it is beau
ive got a 72 series 3 short wheel base... a good spray with fish oil every 6 months for the 10 years ive had it and no real rust to speak of.... look after it - and it will look after you...
@1bentley4ever fish oil (ficshelene or something) is awesome, if you put fish oil in a saucer, and stick a long rusty bolt on its head in the saucer, have a look the next day, the fish oil will have worked its way entirely up the bolt into every nook and cranny - effectively creating a barrier around the steel to prevent it rusting any further.. it stinks like hell for a week or so but very worth it for longevity... every 3 months if u are at the beach often, 6-12 monthly otherwise
He forgot to mention about its shocking build quality - the first generations were being fixed more often than driven. It is being considered as legendary ( but lets be honest - only by brits ) only because they never had money to build something new and competitive, so it looked exactly the same - same chassis, same interior, same stone-age engines. And why don't you tell about its market share wherever people could actually choose what off-roaders they want to buy, including UK market ?
@8stewiegriffin Yep, most of what you say is right, and also applies to most British cars of the era. But that doesn't mean it's not a legendary vehicle. The Japanese might beat it for reliability, but the LR was the precursor for both the Land Cruiser and the Patrol, so without it they may never have come. And the Range Rover was undoubtedly the best 4WD in the world for 20 years, reliability aside. Oh, BTW, I've only ever owned Japanese 4WDs, but I still admire the Land Rover.
@8stewiegriffin My '68 series 2A, still going strong & rarely requires maintenance after 42 years of faithful service. How many of the new generation "SUV's" will be around in 2052?, not many I would guess.
i have a series 2a 109 ex MOD missile gun tractor and a series 2 SWB with 2inch lift, roll cage in the back, big wheels and tyres, bucket seats, racing hardness and a 3.5 V8! Hammond is totally right!
I love these cars... Toughwe than its owners, it wil never rust, it will allways get you home [even after its clueless owner wounds it...]... I wish I could get one for myself, but the way my back is nowadays... I guess I'd be carried out in a strecher...
I loll'ed at the "it will never rust". That's one thing they definitely will do unless you galvanise EVERY steel part. I speak from experience, got a 1988 90 and a 1982 Series 3.
@Chrissylandy Still... The bodywork itself doesn't rust right? I was commenting based on the reviews and such, as I never owned a landy... I did hear, however, that the chassis is the first to go =S Some companies are building some galvanized chassis for them right?
@6devilishangel6 Predominantly, the body is ally. But doors are steel and the bottoms can rust through quickly if they're not taken care of. There are 3 companies making all manner of replacement chassis, but they're not cheap. Bulkheads are also another part that is very prone to rotting away! Without a galvo chassis, you can only put off the rust. Not stop it :(
@6devilishangel6 As a Land Rover owner & lover I am afraid to say that rust has killed off nearly all scrapped Landies. The chassis & bulkhead both rust easily & will make it a scrapper if not rectified. Mine has had a new galvanised chassis :)
@lagoonluke From the number plate on the new defender I guess that it will be from either series one or two because they aired in 2003. And a wild guess but because Jeremy said Renault cilo I assume it was series 2 episode 5 :) But don't hold it to me!
I am not VW Bug fan, but they were rather harsh on it for no reason. Did the bug attack the LR recently and I missed it?
Besides, one great thing the Bug DID do is put a vehicle into the ownership of a very large population that could otherwise not afford to own a vehicle. It brought vehicle ownership to the masses, and in my book that is a pretty big deal.
Besides, I would bet that (aside from clearance issues) that the VW Bug could go anywhere an LR could go IF IN two wheel drive.
@Spraycando All I'm saying is the Land Rover has better ground clearance, better entry and exit angles, better break over angle, more suspension travel, a more powerful engine and off-road biased tryres as standard. Even if you dis-regard clearance issues, I think the Land Rover will get further, even if it's because the VW would struggle through mud, or up steep hills.
@ChaplainC But a Land Rover in two wheel drive... why? It's got 4wd for a reason, doesn't it?
I like the Bug, and you are right about many things you said. But a VW to beat a Landy... nope, the clearance issues and a 4wd are pretty much what off-road stands for. I have no doubt the Bug can move on-road as well as a LR. But off-road - even the Kübelwagen couldn't compete a LR.
Mind you, I did not say that an old bug could beat a rover, just that it could go many places a stock rover can go. You would be surprised how well those things do off road. I used to take my Honda Civic on some amazing roads, shocking people in the process. Never the less, now I just take my jeeps.
@ChaplainC they were not harsh on the bug, it just simply has not achieved as much as the landy, except existing in large numbers for transportation like he said.... the bug will be remembered no more so than the nifty 50 scooter, whereas the landrover lives on and has permanently etched itself a place in history as a vehicle that did more than any other for humankind........
I have a 1986 defender 110 hard top I use for mobile disco's and it has never let me down unlike my new mitsubishi L200 i was going to replace it with, which blow its head gasket after 238 miles of use.
i have a s1 80" . 109 2a/ disco 300 tdi xs . and now a 110 td5 double cab even the gf has a freelander land rover all the way be warned thay are abictive!!
I love my 04 Disco!! The style, comfort and interior keeps the wifey happy and the solid frame, solid axles, clearence, wheel base, flex, CDL and lockers keeps me and my boys happy!
People say the Toyota Land Cruiser is better, but the Land Cruiser didn't save populations of Rhinos, Tigers, Elephants, and large animals in Africa. The Land Cruiser did its share of duties, but they were most notably in Australia and New Zealand, not Africa. And it is used by the UN.
@1bentley4ever im from new zealand and i have a 72 series 3 landy, i definately see more landys than i do cruisers... the cruiser is a tough cookie but it is nowhere near as versatile as a landy.......
@toadecks And Cruisers do need engine rebuilds as well. Landies may be less reliable electronically and may not be sealed as well for dust, but majestically their presence demands much more respect. In short, all Land Rovers are a class act.
@1bentley4ever yeah i've had one almost-fire in the wiring of my landy, had to whip the battery terminal off REAL quick lol... just gotta check wires for cracks etc, replace broken or dodgy wires.. im running a chevy 202cu / 3.3L straight 6 petrol in my landy, has been so so reliable but im gonna have to switch to diesel soon, its just cheaper to run.... I would never be without my series landy :)
I love land rover defenders, when I go for a ride in one it feels more like an adventure than a boring car journey, it's brilliant how strangely magical it is.
Okay... I'll say from the go, I know next to nothing about the subtle and not so subtle differences with Landies.. Which is the series to go for and why?
@daddyofjames buy a cheap bucket of bolts series 1 or 2 or 3, love it like youve never loved anything and get yourself a set of imperial tools, the landrover was designed for easy repairs and maintenance, you can change an axle in 5 minutes in a mud bog.... lol.. oh and go for short wheel base if you want to do any serious 4wdriving 88" or 90" :)
@ghpcaubo Thank you mate. Of all the vehicles I've owned my Defender 90 is the only one I've ever loved with a passion. I've wanted one for as long as I can remember. The above statement is honest. I mean every word of it. And I mean every word. If it ain't broke: don't fix it. To all those who dispute the applications and practicality of this vehicle, just remember one thing. You don't know what you're talking about.
series landies are awesome i like a series 2 pickups series3 hardtops all defenders rangerover classics p38s and the newest ones series one 80 inches dicoveries 1 2 3 and 4 but i hate freelanders!!!!
There is a reason Mountain rescue teams use these so much. They need a car thats big, reliable, goes off road really well, and isn't likely to break, after all they're charities. The LR fits the bill perfectly.
Awesome video surpassed only by the quality of the product portrayed. There is nothing, absolutely nothing better than messing about in a Landrover and a Series 3 surpasses all others.
One of my all time favorite vehicles, but to say "it wasn't broke, so they never fixed it" might be an overstatement. Aluminum body on steel frame is not the most brilliant design. It's probably something LR could have addressed over time. That's why they rust so bad. None the less... I've owned one and I WILL own another as soon as I can afford it!
I would say that the aluminium body is the reason they last so long. As long as the two raw metals dont make contact, as they were designed not to, the aluminium body is brilliant. I have a series 1(1949) and 3 (1976) and they both have negligible corrosion whereas similiar vintage brands rusted away years ago. In fact where I live (AU) LRs are pretty much the only old 4x4s you see, I have never seen another (besides LR) 60 yo 4x4. Galvanize the chassis and it will last even longer.
Though this would be a big fail in steep slopes and I mean VERY steep because it has no hill descent control or whatever you wanna call it and there's the brakes BUT this will own any off roader when it comes to going to places no other car has gone before. Yes even the moon =P
Although I'd go for the modern Range Rover sport or Land Rover LR4 since it's easier to live with, this will probably top my list as the best off roader in the world. It does the job even without today's technology.
Does anyone know (I've looked but can't find it) if there's the test of various 4 X 4's incl I think a BMW X5, and in the end, I think two needed pulling out of mud (They were up to the axles) by a SWB Landy? Was hilarious.
someone told me about this i think. Didn't the landy beat the modern suv's in a hill climb? I've been looking for it too. It's not the one where clarkson goes on about the best fox hunting vehicle (which silverline85 mentions).
I'm only 14 and have lots of chav friends. They all want a first car that they can badly customize and tune to look what they think is cool. I want a land rover for my first car because it's rugged and so care free and rustic... this car is one of the coolest cars in the world.
It is indeed the greatest car ever. It's not a big hole in you wallet, and no, it is not good for picking girls. However, this is definitely the greatest car of all time, If you like BIG adventure. "It's not going to win any oscar, because it would be busy helping someone, doing something, somewhere." And I'm proud to say that I own one, and that I'd rather push a Land rover, than drive a Jeep.
when I was young my father taught me to drive in a Land Rover... only the people who have ever had a land rover would understand the feeling of having a new one... no matter where you drive it, you always will look proper...!!!

@saheltaja
Mind you, I did not say that an old bug could beat a rover, just that it could go many places a stock rover can go. You would be surprised how well those things do off road. I used to take my Honda Civic on some amazing roads, shocking people in the process. Never the less, now I just take my jeeps.
Cheers
ChaplainC 1 year ago
@ChaplainC they were not harsh on the bug, it just simply has not achieved as much as the landy, except existing in large numbers for transportation like he said.... the bug will be remembered no more so than the nifty 50 scooter, whereas the landrover lives on and has permanently etched itself a place in history as a vehicle that did more than any other for humankind........

1bentley4ever 2 years ago
@1bentley4ever
Who cares if it was used to save this or that? I am more interested in which vehicle can do what for me NOW.
ChaplainC 1 year ago
True, a historic car doesn't mean it'll be great for you for the daily commute. But Land Rovers, other than the Freelander, are very good vehicles.
1bentley4ever 1 year ago
That'll be the Defender then..
pickledeggfan 1 year ago
@1bentley4ever im from new zealand and i have a 72 series 3 landy, i definately see more landys than i do cruisers... the cruiser is a tough cookie but it is nowhere near as versatile as a landy.......
toadecks 1 year ago
@toadecks And Cruisers do need engine rebuilds as well. Landies may be less reliable electronically and may not be sealed as well for dust, but majestically their presence demands much more respect. In short, all Land Rovers are a class act.
1bentley4ever 1 year ago

To all those who follow false prophets.
And to those who claim to be righteous.
Be aware.
There is a new religion.
That religion is Land Rover.

Okay... I'll say from the go, I know next to nothing about the subtle and not so subtle differences with Landies.. Which is the series to go for and why?
daddyofjames 2 years ago
all of them :)
jammy137 2 years ago
@daddyofjames buy a cheap bucket of bolts series 1 or 2 or 3, love it like youve never loved anything and get yourself a set of imperial tools, the landrover was designed for easy repairs and maintenance, you can change an axle in 5 minutes in a mud bog.... lol.. oh and go for short wheel base if you want to do any serious 4wdriving 88" or 90" :)
toadecks 1 year ago
I know. Thanks.
Spraycando 2 years ago
@ghpcaubo Thank you mate. Of all the vehicles I've owned my Defender 90 is the only one I've ever loved with a passion. I've wanted one for as long as I can remember. The above statement is honest. I mean every word of it. And I mean every word. If it ain't broke: don't fix it. To all those who dispute the applications and practicality of this vehicle, just remember one thing. You don't know what you're talking about.

There is a reason Mountain rescue teams use these so much. They need a car thats big, reliable, goes off road really well, and isn't likely to break, after all they're charities. The LR fits the bill perfectly.
F1X0R121 2 years ago 4
Awesome video surpassed only by the quality of the product portrayed. There is nothing, absolutely nothing better than messing about in a Landrover and a Series 3 surpasses all others.

One of my all time favorite vehicles, but to say "it wasn't broke, so they never fixed it" might be an overstatement. Aluminum body on steel frame is not the most brilliant design. It's probably something LR could have addressed over time. That's why they rust so bad. None the less... I've owned one and I WILL own another as soon as I can afford it!
raanderson77 2 years ago
I would say that the aluminium body is the reason they last so long. As long as the two raw metals dont make contact, as they were designed not to, the aluminium body is brilliant. I have a series 1(1949) and 3 (1976) and they both have negligible corrosion whereas similiar vintage brands rusted away years ago. In fact where I live (AU) LRs are pretty much the only old 4x4s you see, I have never seen another (besides LR) 60 yo 4x4. Galvanize the chassis and it will last even longer.
serepx 2 years ago 2
And Hammond's got that right.
"A land rover would never turn up to collect an oscar, it would be far too busy doing something important somewhere for someone"
Jus as what Land Rovers were meant to be. It's more special than the most expensive and modern Off Road vehicle exisiting today.
mondeost2202008 2 years ago 3
Though this would be a big fail in steep slopes and I mean VERY steep because it has no hill descent control or whatever you wanna call it and there's the brakes BUT this will own any off roader when it comes to going to places no other car has gone before. Yes even the moon =P
Although I'd go for the modern Range Rover sport or Land Rover LR4 since it's easier to live with, this will probably top my list as the best off roader in the world. It does the job even without today's technology.
mondeost2202008 2 years ago
Does anyone know (I've looked but can't find it) if there's the test of various 4 X 4's incl I think a BMW X5, and in the end, I think two needed pulling out of mud (They were up to the axles) by a SWB Landy? Was hilarious.
daddyofjames 2 years ago
...I think it was the test of 4x4s by Jeremy Clarkson, with his LandCruiser and the RangeRover, seen that on TopGear.

someone told me about this i think.

I want a land rover for my first car because it's rugged and so care free and rustic... this car is one of the coolest cars in the world.

and its very customisable! Roll cages, snorkels bull bars, tow packs, reverse lamps, various lights at the front.
heathenwalking 2 years ago
I'm sorry, but I couldn't agree more.
