I love this film. It makes me remember a time when things seemed simplier. The sense of nostalgia runs through my veins, until my heart feels like it's literally going to explode (literally lifted from american beauty) I was only born in 1984, but somehow, the 80s will always be in my blood. This film is haunting, since the moment I saw it, the way it's shot, the music, the performances, it's an absolutely stunning piece of film making.
wonderful soundtrack by mr newman..real shame it never got a proper release..id love to hear it in 320 or flac..agree with crashman that the soundtrack carried a lot of the emotional weight but robert downey junior is awesome in this flick
Brilliant. Reaching heights other composers could only dream of. This IS his best soundtrack, yet it's his least known. It's definitely his best in my view. I've always loved this film too.
I haven't heard this music since I saw the movie back in 1987 on Thanksgiving day, and remember very clearly getting chills at the cue that starts at 1:03. While I didn't care for the film, that little bit of music has lingered with me all of these years. Listening to this now, so many years later, after a random late night search on YouTube, all I can say is that it holds up amazingly well. Frankly, it's even better than I remembered. Thanks for sharing this.
Nice video. 'Less than Zero' is a film which seemed to capture the zeitgeist of the 80s and is still very powerful with audiences today.
I've just made a video with screenshots, in chronological order, of the film set against Thomas Newman's beautiful music score from the original motion picture.
sound reproduction not so great but... if you can hear enough you can see that it caries time suspension the way a timeless piece should ... beautiful and simple as is space and age
i do not question the reason, but no other piece of music has ever touched me as deeply as this soundtrack did. back then i drove my mom nuts as i watched the movie over and over again just to be able to hear and enjoy it :). thx cuervoblack for putting this on youtube
WOW-- this movie had such a mood that I think does not get enough props. It is well liked and well remembered but man the beautiful shots and the brutal realities it portrayed of luxury opposite the weakest and worst of human nature was so moving to me. I suppose it was also that I was a young man fresh from the marines all built and blonde but from a suddenly wealthy family and I was so unprepared, to this day these songs can take me back to another life. Nice Post
thanks for uploading this, LTZ is one of my favorite movies and the soundtrack is so haunting and beautiful. It makes you feel everything that is portrayed in the movie. makes me want to cry. thanks again.
Bless you a thousand times for sharing the sacred Newman score with us, mere mortals.
It's so beautiful, haunting, powerful... and totally 1980's. I think of Julian, his friends, his life... and all the hell that rained down on him during his last years.
And much of that hell he brought down on himself... and his people.
I also suffer from stress, so it's just perfect to unwind to.
In terms of atmosphere, this is the most extraordinary soundtrack I have ever heard. While the film is deeply, deeply flawed, I agree with a previous commentator that this music communicates the ambiance of what we wanted the film to be. One day they will remake "Less Than Zero", I'm sure- and sadly it will be without this music. Unlimited thanks for the person who so kindly put this up.
I remember watching this movie and the only thing I kept thinking was, I wish someone would give RD jr a napkin to wipe that suspicious white stuff from the corners of his mouth. LOL!
the score, coupled with the scene, when downey's character died in the car, then the silent reaction/crying of Gertz n McCarthy, gave this score so much power!
@crashman6 yah I remember the mixture of the lush influences of early MTV colors along with the attitudes of the color film noir shooting style reminiscent of say blade runner were great but for this movie to work as well as it did it required a magnificent other worldly but intense and ethereal sound track. And the music in this movie so often made shots work that would have otherwise come off as pretentious art photo shoots. These songs still stir me up even now.
Might as well mention Newman's capable stuttering blues piano riffs for the Blair's Family Compound shots. It's fun to try to emulate his style on a Kurzweil. I recommend it.
One of the best movie scores ever in my mind ... really underlines a brilliant story of 1980s excess ... is it possible to download this to iPod somehow?
Me too. Back in fall of 1987, I actually took a portable cassette recorder into the theatre on my many visits to watch this film again and recorded the soundtrack so I could hear it when i could not find it avail at stores. I still have that cassette and it still plays (not so well). Brilliant soundtrack, brilliant movie. Amazing acting for sadly for R.D. Jr. it was his life story but he did survive his drug addiction unlike his character. Thanks to everyone who made this movie.
Chilling as the night I first heard it at the Cinema Theater in 1987. Kanevska's use of Black & White with High Shutter Speed on Blair in front of the window overlooking the ocean. Music is the closest thing to time travel we have.
Its a damn shame Rick Ruben got his way when the soundtrack was released...so all we got was the pre-recorded covers instead of this fantastic music by THomas Newman.
Yes I do Agree 100% with you, The one basic problem with Rick Ruben is he tries to make the groups that he works with sound different. then what the FANS like them for. Just look at the cures album they did right before the last one that just came out. (thats if you like the cure. That album is so FAR from what the Cure sounds like,

Thomas Newman also composed the memorable score to the great American film AMERICAN BEAUTY. I love LESS THA ZERO, so it's great to have his complete score to it available; many thanks!
I always liked this score and Newman's music. I'm wondering if his score to Light of Day was ever released because it had the ambience of the one for Less than zero.
Haunting and memorable. Really about something. Thomas Newman is worthy of Danny Elfman and John Williams. This is one of the most vital soundtracks ever recorded in history.
Where in the name of ... did you get these, I have been looking for more than a decade for the Original Score of this movie, just got the soundtrack which is good, but it did not contain none of Newmans wonderful music. Great remastering work, it really brought back memories.

It took me nineteen years to find this CD. When I saw this in November of 87 I thought I was the only one on earth who needed to find this music.
What did everyone else think of this in Nov 87? Anyone else start a quest to find this score?
