you are partially correct. Vince Gill wrote this song for his brother after he killed himself; brother suffered from some emotional problems. Because of his brother's struggles, Vince Gill was particularly touched by his buddy Keith Whitley's battle with alcoholism. No matter the impetus for writing the song, God's hand was absolutely upon Vince Gill when he wrote this, one of the most beautiful Gospel songs, period, of any era or genre. I pray it will continue to glorify God.
