@ChromeBoarder nope and there is no live view either but i got plenty other good video cameras anyway. the bracketing mode is three shots not five for hdr timelapse
@BramowitchIII Sadly not enough viewers on yt supported me financially. ?This is my job and i need to pay the bills. So most of my new reviews are at cameralabs only. btw, this one was my first video, so isn't very goodf!
They're the same thing, but in North America, it's called the Rebel XTi, and in other parts of the world it's called the EOS 400d. Canon tends to do that with their cameras. One name for North America, then another name for the other countries.
I've got this camera on ebay and now there is a white line in the middle of the LCD and prints. When viewing the photos on my computer the line is black.
@cameralabs Hehe. Comparing this to your review on the 550D/t2i, I can definitely tell that you have dramatically improved in your reviewing skills. Keep up the good work!
@RiverJH95 never get bridge cameras, they are like slr's but don't offer the speed. what kind of camera offers near instant shutter lag? an slr. the xti is rather old, maybe you should get the t1i or the xsi.
thanks but the only reason i had a chance to get a xti was because my dad got an t1i and he gave me a chance for his old one, i took the xti, im glad i did
yeah, i'm a big fan of your canon eos 50d and 40d, as well as the nikon d40 and d90 vid tour. not only a bit, gordon, but a lot of improvements! hopefully someday, you'll get the chance to creat a vid tour of some top end dslrs (canon eos 1d mark 4 or nikon d3)
I'm looking at this camera as my first SLR (I've had really nice Sony Cybershots up until now, and an old Sigma AS300 35mm). The one I'm looking at comes along with a Sigma 18-50mm lens as well. Pricing is around $400. Do you think this would be a good value? I can't afford the newer cameras - but want to learn the true manual side of photography and want to take alot of nature shots, and macro shots. Appreciate any assistance. Thanks
if you want to do low level/locked on a tripod macro shots i think "live view" will be a big benefit to you. that is if you can find a model cheap enough with one on :)
Eh, I'm not a big fan of live view. One of the biggest points of a DSLR camera over a point-and-shoot in my opinion is the immersion that the viewfinder gives you. Switching to the LCD screen seems extremely counter-productive for me, and IMO if you need live view you're better off with a P&S.
i started off with this and its great for capturing moments and its battery life lasts longer so i dont need to pack my battery charger when i go on hikes
i got the xsi over the xti. I don't think the live view is a gimmick, it's really useful for when your shooting in awkward angels, but you are right, i rarely use it.
I'm planning on getting an XTi, but I'm not sure whether to get the black one or the silver one. Some people told me the silver one looks too much like plastic. I don't know...
Yes, all modern cameras have AF. This particular model is almost three years old now though, so you may want to visit the best buys section at cameralabs . com to find out the best ones available right now.
The screen is used to show all the settings that are used in the picture being taken. You get very used to looking through the actual viewfinder quickly. I actually find myself raising my girlfriends point and shoot to my eye trying to take a picture, of course it doesn't have a viewfinder though, just the LCD, haha. So I kind of look like an idiot with a regular point and shoot.
Why is vignetting so bad on Canon cameras when using zoom? Nearly every shot I see on the web with vignetting is taken with a Canon (even the expensive ones)! I have a SX110-IS. No problem with vignetting until I tilt the camera up to include a clear or white sky! Can even see it appearing on the LCD!
vignetting is more of a problem with lenses not the camera bodies. it doesnt matter if you have a 1ds mk3, if you have a crappy lens youre gonna get crappy pictures
Check out the verdict page of my Nikon D60 review at cameralabs . com - it compares them. Also check out the best buys section for reviews of more recent models...
i have the standard lens to this camera - Do you recommend any settings to capturing "the eye" i tried using macro -- but that doesn't give me the results i want .. =] Thanks in advance.
They're completely different cameras - the 400D is an older entry-level model, whereas the 40D is a semi-pro model; you may also want to compare the 450D and 1000D as these are Canon's newer budget models. I can't spend much time on Youtube, but I'd recommend reading the reviews for all the models you're interested in at cameralabs . com first (especially the verdict pages), and if you have any more Qs, feel free to ask in the cameralabs forums... Our best buys section is also worth looking at!
i'm really considering this as my first DSLR camera. i'm a make up artist, so it's important that i get crisp portrait / close up shots. do you think the kit lens is a good lens for portraits? or do your recommend any other lenses for portraits?
The kit lens is ok, but pretty basic. See our Canon kit lens group test at cameralabs . com for comparisons against better zooms. A great and affordable other option is just a 50mm lens - feel free to discuss your options in the Canon section of the cameralabs forums, but be sure to tell us your budget.
I'd recommend checking out the 10 Megapixel group test in the reviews section at cameralabs . com as I've compared them in detail there. Also check out our best buys section, as both those models are older ones now...
The 400D / XTi has been replaced by the 1000D / XS and at a higher level, the 450D /. XSi. Check out the verdict pages of our K200D and Canon XS /1000D reviews at cameralabs . com to compare them!
How well is this camera with macro? Im going to be getting it soon and soon after a tamron 90mm lens but until I get that lens, how well is the macro?
Do you mean how good is the kit lens for macro? It's ok, but not designed for it - check out the Canon kit lens group test at cameralabs . com to see how it compares - make sure you have a look at all the results pages!
i have just got this camera and i have notice the lens is the best - what would you recommend to replace the standard kit lens....any help appreciated - thanks
The E-520 is much better featured with built-in IS and live view. It would be more fair to compare it against the Canon 1000D /. XS. See our preview of the latter at cameralabs . com for more details...
I'm currently shopping for a camera and am using your reviews and website as a bases for...reviews(research...something..I donno)...so I've seen a few of the video's and you don't seem nearly as chipper in this one as you do in the others. Bad day?
Well spotted! This was actually my very first video review, so that's why it's a bit rough! And done all in one take! Check out the one for the 450D / XSi to see the current style!
Actually I've already watched and read your review of the 450D, that review sold me on it, I should be getting it sometime soon. I'm looking for a lense and 'll use your reviews for those too.
hi! your review videos are great.. thank you so much. i have a question for u: i'm lookin for a dslr, i have two in mind.. the nikon d40 and this one, the canon 400d... i've research the two of them but i can't decide yet... i consider myself more than a begginer user, but not much like a profesional one.. like in between.. people said to me that the canon 400d has more potencial for intermediate users like me... can you help me?
Hi, I just bought a cannon rebel xti which came with efs 18-55mm lens. I want to upgrade the camera so I can take pictures with blurr background. Which lens do you prefer to have a good blurr back ground?
First, head over to our sister site dslrtips . com as we have a tutorial on achieving this effect. You might be able to get the effect you want with your existing lens. Otherwise go for one with a small f-number, and the cheapest for the Canon would be the 50mm f1.8.
Thank you very much CameraLabs, I just purchased one today, before I had all Point and Shoots, like the Canon S3, but I'm really starting to get into it, so thanks much for this walkthrough.
something that may help you is you can download this video with a ripper from the internet and then play it in WMV or some other player and play it in a slower mode. I hope that helps you.
Kit lens vs Kit lens...The Rebel XTi is INFERIOR to the Nikon D40 by a mile, made some comparissons here and there,The XTi will only deliver superior results if you use midrange to top of the line Canon lenses...Built in sensor cleaning? LAME,JUST A MARKETTING GIMMICK,NOT GOOD ENOUGH TO SHAKE EVERY DUST.
So if you are going to plunge in the DSLR world,go the NIKON route...that extra cash that you save from buying a D40 will entitle you to buy a kick-ass Nikkor lense
Hi Aiden, we can discuss this in the Buying a new camera section of the cameralabs forum... But first read the verdict page of our D40 review as this compares their features...
I am starting a home based photography business. I am totally undecided on what digital SLR to purchase. I have an old canon 35mm ae-1 prog. that was passed down to me from my grandfather. I am planning on trading it in on a new digital SLR, and I think the canon xt-i is my 1st choice. Any suggestions for professional photos, yet budget friendly digital SLR?
It doesn't have it, but the new 450D / XSi does. Some pros and enthusiasts use spot metering a lot, but to be honest most people will be fine with the other metering modes. Remember if the result is too light or dark, you can always use exposure compensation to adjust - see our workshops at dslrtips . com...

gerv8 2 years ago
Heck, some old people still shoot with film camera.
A DSLR body is good for a looooong time. I'd say 7 years or maybe more.
Quality Lenses and flash is the promary thing to get.
The only reason to get a newer body is because of one thing: Less noise at high ISO.
But if you shoot in plain sunlight or have IS lenses and a Tripod, then even a 30D,300D,400D, will do
Cr4zYH3aD 2 years ago
Plus, the Nikon has one big advantage: No noise at high iso.
But anyway, I love my xti. I'm planning to save my money for a 5D Mark II or buy stuff for my xti suchs as lenses etc.
If you think about it, There's no big difference between a 30D/300D/400D and recent cameras (i'm talking about 1000-1500$).
High ISO Noise: Still have it
Slow Burst: Still have it
Megapixels: Now at 15, but that's no big differences.
I think the DSLR market has not evolved that much for all the cash they ask
Cr4zYH3aD 2 years ago
almost three years old, but I still like mine. I don't have the money to change, let alone get a 5d mark ii.
The best thing you can do is buy an xti and get a good lenses and a flash.
Getting expansive body with poor lenses is not recommanded at all.
It also has the same af sensor as the 30D, which is good.
Personally, I would not buy a 1000-2000$ camera body every 2 years.
Cr4zYH3aD 2 years ago

Im new into photography and i am stuck between buying the Sony A200 DSLR and the Canon ES0 400D...which one do you think is better?

Check out the verdict page of our Sony S200 review at cameralabs . com - I've compared them there...

in terms of optics, which one is better?
the Canon EOS 400D / Digital Rebel XTi or the Panasonic dmc-fz50?
oiala 3 years ago
Would you personally prefer this over the Pentax K200d? I'm torn and would very much appreciate your advice on the matter.
Though both have cons and pros,I'd just like an outsider's opinion.
LOLOLMONKEY 3 years ago
The 400D / XTi has been replaced by the 1000D / XS and at a higher level, the 450D /. XSi. Check out the verdict pages of our K200D and Canon XS /1000D reviews at cameralabs . com to compare them!

How well is this camera with macro? Im going to be getting it soon and soon after a tamron 90mm lens but until I get that lens, how well is the macro?
ShugarCube11 3 years ago
Do you mean how good is the kit lens for macro? It's ok, but not designed for it - check out the Canon kit lens group test at cameralabs . com to see how it compares - make sure you have a look at all the results pages!

i have just got this camera and i have notice the lens is the best - what would you recommend to replace the standard kit lens....any help appreciated - thanks

From your experience which cameras would you remcommend?
This camera (Canon EOS 400D) or the Olympus E520?
Thanks.
07Patty 3 years ago
The E-520 is much better featured with built-in IS and live view. It would be more fair to compare it against the Canon 1000D /. XS. See our preview of the latter at cameralabs . com for more details...

thanks cameralabs. your reviews are very detailed and very well produced.
Thanks!

is there a difference between a 400d and a rebel xti???????
scandalordie 3 years ago
Nope, they're the same camera. it's called the 400D in Europe and the XTi in North America.

It's quite odd seeing a camera in silver. But i like it.

I'm currently shopping for a camera and am using your reviews and website as a bases for...reviews(research...something..I donno)...so I've seen a few of the video's and you don't seem nearly as chipper in this one as you do in the others. Bad day?
aggitann 3 years ago
Well spotted! This was actually my very first video review, so that's why it's a bit rough! And done all in one take! Check out the one for the 450D / XSi to see the current style!
cameralabs 3 years ago

Thanks
farazahmed82 3 years ago

Gordon, the XTI doesn't have SPOT METERING right? is this a disadvantage? what are the cons and pros of having this? thanks. :)
looneyloey 3 years ago
It doesn't have it, but the new 450D / XSi does. Some pros and enthusiasts use spot metering a lot, but to be honest most people will be fine with the other metering modes. Remember if the result is too light or dark, you can always use exposure compensation to adjust - see our workshops at dslrtips . com...

thanks Gordon, the reason why I ask about spot m
