  • I didn't know the Starship Enterprise had a brass band.

  • Being the best cornet player in the world takes more than just hitting every note at the right time at the pitch. It requires control and understanding but also passion and love.

  • he has the perfect sound for brass band!

  • One of the greatest cornet players... yet at 2:01 he slips up very noticeably and does take quite a number of "shortcuts"... compare that to Phil McCann, who has been THE no. 1 cornet player in brass bands for the last forty years!

  • @barliman2001 Everyone messes up at some point. Even Phil McCann. They are still both brilliant players and you can't say one is better than the other just cause you saw a video of david daws making one mistake. If Phil Mccann had as many videos up as david does I'm positive we would be able to find one mistake. So quit with the competition and just leave it at one of the greatest cornet players!

  • Amazing! God has given David such a great gift to praise him with and to bring God's glory to where ever he plays and to those who don't know how amazing our God is. Many blessings to him.

  • LET'S NOT BE VITUPERATIVE. JUST ENJOY THE MUSIC.

  • @jonesy...Greatest Cornet player that ever lived??? Who thinks that? What Top players have you asked? Maurice Murphy played Cornet, as do all of the world's Elite Orchestral Trumpet players. David Daws, whilst being a terrific Cornet player, is not in the same league as those guys. As you said, do your homework. But of course if you knew anything about proper, real world, brass playing, and not the Sally Army's idea of it, I wouldn't have needed to say that.

  • Another theist full of shit. Great music though.

  • Hopefully we are not forgetting David and all of the Salvationist that play do this for God's glory regardless of how good they are. God is judging their hearts and not the quality of their presentation.

  • @timesawasten1 So that's why God doesn't prevent wars, heal the sick or feed the starving etc, etc. He's too busy listening to music. Shame on him!

  • @sampasav If you knew who it was of whom you have said "shame on him" you would fall on your face to beg mercy. There is a day when He will not hear you, do you realize that?

  • @TheChaseair Another theist full of shit. Great music though.

  • Hey Folks..just wanted to say that David is One of the finest Players i have heard, and to tell you the truth I have heard the best since i was born...and even before!!. Each one of you have a preference in sound and in technique but if you listen to how a player puts not only those 2 aspects together with the melodic rhythm of his Heart...Only then can you tell Technical player from a Fabulous one....Music is not comprised of notes but of emotions written as dots on a page.

  • @geoffdiffey like it - "Music is not comprised of notes but of emotions written as dots on a page."

  • Kind of looks like a Star Fleet uniform from the movies. lol

  • boring...

  • He's very very talented, and has two very talented daughters! One is in the national youth orchestra on tormbone, for anyone who cares :L

Great performance and soloist! And solo!

  • David Daws performing Glorious Fountain with the International Staff Band of The Salvation Army.

  • allemachtig prachtig, David and band !!!

  • pliz im begging you if anyone has the music to this pliz contact me i need it for my band we are very capable but lack resources pliz be kind

  • Very Good...

  • whew, damn, the SA band people can sure play!!

  • I played in the US Air Force bands and played with trumpet/cornet people who played as well as this gentleman.

  • US Air Force similar players, would be very interested to hear them

  • @xmetbass you have just made your self look like a penis head

  • @cez1005 It's a shame you don't know what you are talking about.

  • @xmetbass Ah, you live in that place called Cloud Cuckoo land; always wanted to go, what's it like?!! What a laugh! 'This gentleman' is widely regarded as the best cornet player on the planet. But of course if you knew anything about cornet playing, I wouldn't have needed to say that.

  • @Jonesy038 i can name 2 right off the top of my head. Let's try Gerard Schwartz and Maurice Andre. I've also performed with many of my Philadelphia orchestra friends. I also perform in 3 concert bands in the position of solo cornet and first chair in a symphony orchestra. I just chose not to brag about my accomplishments. I have also performed in the chorus of the Metropolitan opera in NYC for 12 years.

  • Wow!! is all I can write :O

  • Daws is awesome. i heard he had an operation to remove scaring from his lip but hes back playing now and sounding great again. hope its true, would be tragic for banding to loose him.

  • Comment removed

  • @cardinaldeak No he's not back playing solos yet. I played under him at an army music school (which was only open to some corps) in the october half term 2009, and he played when he wasn't conducting (Andrew Blyth also conducted), but we invited him back to (my corps) do some solos and be the soloist for my Y.P Band 90th anniversary, but he said no cause he's not doing solos yet, cause of his lip. He's a very nice guy though, and very talented! Hopefully see him doing solos again soon!

  • I like his technical talents but I don´t like his sound!!! It sounds a bit like a violine!!!

  • Such a beautiful sound. I have the same Surname but never played this good. :)

  • nice interperatation of the note at 2:00 :P

  • haha^^

  • I would love to hear and see him play Arban's 'Variations sur la Tyrolienne' (and others)

  • Thank you for such wonderful music!

  • He uses a Besson 928 and a Denis Wick 4B

  • Does anyone know what gear he uses? I'm absolutely certain that it doesn't really make a difference, he'd sound that gorgeous no matter what he was playing on, I'm just curious...

  • @trumpetee he now uses a lacquered York Eminence if you still want to know

  • my brass band just played this song with a guest soloist from the states...the soloist was good but not nearly as fluent as david..this song is beautiful and one day, I hope to be able to play as well:)

  • is he georges father

  • Sooo beautiful

  • the one thing i adore mostaboutdavid is that he has been offerd soo much money to play with Blake Dyke Band, the best band in the world but he says no because he playsforgod!! i admire him for that!!

  • I wish that I could play for God as well as him.

I would be sure of my own clowd.

  • hey! i just saw your comment haha. he is a great player

  • Comment removed

  • Too bad :( I would love to hear him "plat".

  • Simply beautiful!! What can I say about him? David is perfect. The most important he is playing to honnor God.

  • does anyone know any more information about the piece, or where i can find it??

  • veeeerrry gooood inddeeed!

    From Aizawl

  • I've had the privelige of accmpanying David daws during a rehearsel. I was playin 1st baritone as the usual baritone player was away. i obviously wasnt in this band tho he came to our corps.

  • how does he get that tone! its so mellow, nice!

  • I've heard them all, and I have found something in all of them to admire and enjoy about their cornet playing. David Daws is distinctive, and is my favourite. That is strictly a personal opinion.

  • This man is indeed one of the best I have heard as well. The SA has such an assembly of fine musicians..and they have the resources to do it. Seems sad to me that much of this exceptional music is not getting out to the world to value and appreciate. Too much garabe music dominating today. I Play rock n roll music in bars and I am not saint but, I am a former Army Band trumpet player so I have something to base my opinion on as do you also, I am sure.

    All the Best. Lynn

  • thank you 4 upload this video!

    bless...

  • Just listened to this piece and I have to say you are way of the mark with your opinion of his playing. I have listened also to Phil Smith and his tone, ability do not come close to David Daws. I suggest you listen more carefully to both parties and then make a more constructive opinion

  • Do we really have to compare these players? They are both great.

  • Fair point hankyeulyang, both great players. Lets just continue to enjoy both artists musical ability.

  • well said, "euphfellowship"

you took the words from my mouth, i couldnt have said it better, thankyou

    =D

  • The problem with hearing a player of David Daws' caliber is twofold, really. 1) If he makes a mistake, you have a certain group of people who will jump up and down and scream that he sucks because he split a note here or there. A split doesn't mean you aren't a good player at ALL. 2) Most people, despite their own egos, aren't musically intelligent enough to notice all of the subtle, minute things that are put into the performance by the soloist. Some people need to learn to enjoy good playing.

  • yeah, christian lindberg splits notes "all the time" (i think i've heard about four of them on record and a few more live..) but still, he's one of the greatest musicians of our time..

    david daws is awsome..

  • If you listen carefully you'll realise that the vib is not 'constant'. Granted his sound is quite British in so far as cornet players over here are known for sounding a bit twangy, but you'll often hear him play certain notes straight for several beats and then add a bit of colour to the end of it. There is not vib on the *front* of every note. And why do you assume I have never heard Phil Smith play!? Ask Phil Smith what he thinks of David Daws! Likewise Webster, Marshall et al...!

  • You may be interested to know that 'this guy' is regarded by many of the great and the good as possibly the greatest cornet player that ever lived. If you think you're the man who can 'let David Daws know' what to do with a cornet, you have just succedded in making an absolute clown of yourself in public. Well done!

If you knew anything about cornet playing you would know who David Daws is. Do your homework before making yourself look ridiculous. Unsupported, nervous sound?!! What a laugh!

  • very nice!

  • AWESOME CORNET PLAYER!

  • awesome!

  • he is the best in the world! (really i know)

  • Unlike some players, he gets the technicality, and has an absolutely brilliant sound

  • This man is a brilliant cornet player. He once got up and played 'Clear Skies' with no more than 12 hours notice, FROM MEMORY! For those who don't know, Clear Skies is, I think, the hardest cornet solo ever written. Now don't quote me on that, just something I heard.

  • Clear skies is very hard yes, but the hardest thing about it is playing it well ;) Like David can...! ;)

  • "lear Skies is, I think, the hardest cornet solo ever written. Now don't quote me on that, just something I heard."

Hate to disappoint, but Clear Skies, whilst being an Army classic, is a million miles away from being anything like 'the hardest cornet solo ever written'. In fact, there is no such thing anyway. The new Terry Camsey solo makes Clear Skies sound like a hymn tune....... BUT, David Daws is without question the greatest cornet player there has ever been.

  • Can you please tell me the name of this piece you are talking about?

  • 'Happy Land' by Terry Camsey, 2007. There are hundreds of cornet solos more difficult than Clear Skies, and in any case to talk of 'the hardest cornet solo ever written' doesn't make any sense. It doesn't work like that.

  • Brilliant as his playing is...he fluffed several notes

  • The best living cornet player.

  • bravo!

  • audio is abit ahead of the film:D

  • All I've got to say is FTANG! lol

Not quite Arturo Sandoval is he? LOL

  • whirlwind by roger webster is on a cd from blach dyke. check out the regular brassband stores / canals for more details.

  • Cool. Someone with the same last name as me. And whats Ironic...my dads name is David hah.

  • david daws is the best plyer of the world!!! roger webster is very good.. do anybody know whirwind played by roger webster??

but david daws is the finest player i ever heard...

ne time i played with himn and it made so much fun^^

  • That man is a sick cornet player. So smooth and effortless, and he played the whole piece without sheet music.

  • what piece is this?

  • Glorious Fountain (like the title says!)

  • couple of splits between 1:50 - 2:00. other than that wow

  • 1994-1995

  • I think this must have been in 1992 or so.

  • Once again proving he is the best cornet player around, and showing how far Roger Webster still has to go

  • That's a bit of overkill. Both are great.

  • You're entitled to your opinion. But having heard much of both players, for me Mr Daws is another level.

  • Where is this video taken from?

  • You are the greatest cornet player....god bless I S B are great Love you....

  • Brilliant thank you very much God Bless, Bernard
