I have never liked this guy. Nothing impressive about him.... Dressage is often much, much better at the low classes, really, not all about flashy legs, but actually harmony and JOY between rider and horse.
I can't help but think how some of these top riders feel when they read other people's commets about their riding. I'm sure that they don't mean to "abuse" their horses,
"Oh, YES, of COURSE, EDWARD would NOT do the same!! HE WOULDN'T!!! HE's a CHAMPION!! HE's too kind to his horse!! Look how great results they are giving together!!" - doesn't remind the same 'tale' about another 'world famous' "BEST" chamion ???
@Karyn64 If Edward actually ABUSED his horse it would show in his performances. Which it doesn't. The rider on the clip is not Edward, havent you noticed that you can never see the riders face clearly. As for the horse, I used to loan a horse which looked like that. Dont get me wrong, I am wholly against rollkur, its horrible, but Gal does not use it!
The only thing that has meaning here is the INCREDIBLE degree of NAIVETY still shown by people admiring so-called "champions" and never guessing, even WILLING to guess, that ignorance is the huge monster, but also the most common STANDART that lives in every horse stable...chamion or not...
Shoes, bridles, bit, forced neck flexion, rollkur, back muscules dystrophy as result of riding as only activity.... They nedd and deserve too much more....
I'm sorry but it does show in his performances. He should abandon rollkur because he is a wonderful rider and rollkur is beneath him. The exaggerated trot and walk in front are a dead give away. Totilas is better than Salinero but it is still cruel training whoever does it.
@cfaulconerdressage I'm so with you on that! I've been so split in what to think about Totilas and Edward. On one hand Totilas is an incredible horse and Edward is a very good rider, but on the other I just know how he trains which gives me a very bad taste.
That's disgusting. And for the comments about how the horse wouldn't do it if they don't want to, I'm going to say this. Horses take care of their riders. Just because something hurts, it doesn't mean they're just gonna say, well I'll buck him off and the pain will stop. They don't think like that. If they have been taught to behave well, they'll bare it. This is a good horse and he doesn't deserve the crap that rider is giving him. Bend YOUR head to your chest for a hour and see how you like it

If the horse really didn't like it, Edward wouldn't be sitting on the horse anymore. And you can't say that the horse has no other way to go , because if the horse would say, I'm going that way, there is nothing that can stop the horse!
i read an article about this in a magazine once, apparently that's illegal in dressage shows? classified as ''overbending'', cause it said it DOES hurt the horse
@krisouyeah he doesn't need to be unhappy to be trained or get warmed up with rollkur.. he might even benefit if he does not use it in an unhealthy way, but instead to build more muscles in Gribaldi.. Its completely my opinion but..
I'm very dissapointed in him, Anky and the other flags of our country. It doesn't make us look good. This training method is cruel and theres no way I could support this.
Could somebody explain to me the point of this "method" of training? It seems counter productive to ride a horse that far behind the bit....
How on earth does that teach them anything?? It seems counter productive to do this. Can anyone tell me why it's done? As a rider I would be worried that my horse would ride like that in competition!
There is no purgatory for Gal. He will go to hell, have that bit in his mouth for eternity and pulled his chin all the way down to his chest. Gribaldi we all feel for you.
One more thing, Jaccko. Watch the tape carefully, the horse is TRYING to bring his poll and back up and move freely. In his attempt the rider is yanking his head back down! you can CLEARLY see the "See-saw" motion. and as everyone knows, See-saw the bit in a horses mouth is one of the seven deadly sins of riding.
Jaccko- I don't like Anky. I don't liek the way she rides. I can critize that because it's MY opinion. and as for this "suppling technique" It is HIGHLY frowned upon by vets, dressage judges and Classical Dressage riders and enthusists. There is a REASON why her horse moves like a robot, with no happiness in his tests.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
twheEventer - LOL.. her horses dont move like robots, they look exremely good :) 1) if the judges didnt like it they wouldnt put her first 2) vets have proved that her horses are better than most, would you like that website for it? 3) i dont give a rats arse what classical riders think of Anky or modern dressage cos modern has proven to be better, afterall, classical horses move around with up and back stiff necks with no movement possible
I have read about that too, I think I searched "anky long and low" at google, but then im not sure...but its pretty obvious that a horse that trains all of his muscels(anky's) are better than horses for example briar who has no power at all from behind. Imagine anky on briar! haha anky always has so much power and all of theses classical horses like briar and max (kyrklund) you foget about them if ankys around!
You're an idiot! Classical Dressage is all about NOT pushing the animal to fast, and suppleness and throughness. Also it's about not using techniques that can potentially HURT the horse. (Which the Rollkur has been PROVEN to do. the windpipe is not made to take that extreme flextion) and while putting you head to YOUR chest may work, we are not horses, no are you running around doing lateral with your head to your chest. So there goes that argument.
Theres no proof of that rollkur hurts the horse. People who are stuck on something, think they are animlal lovers, cant handle changes, those are the people who thinks there are proof of hurting. If it was hurting the horse, they would not be allowed to use it.
Yes I love animals. And if loving an animal and not wanting to hurt it when you're on its back, and trying to train it correctly, with no shortcuts or backwards methods then I guess I'm just "behind the times."
Personnally, I feel that if use of rullkür is harmful to the horse, and since it clearly goes against all the goals of classical dressage (and isn't the preservation of classical riding and training the whole point?) then using this technique constitutes cheating just as much as putting a bigger engine than allowed in a racecar. Not as easy to detect and sanction, unfortunately. But for the moment, the debate goes on...
I beg to differ about there being no proof that rollkür hurts the horse. The veterinary community is quite divided about this practice, and some specialists believe that rollkür is very damaging to the horse. There are many techniques that are in use (or that previously were accepted and that are no longer in use) that are or can be harmful to the horse. What's popular may not be right, what's right may not be popular.
I still have respect for this practice simply because it defeats the ultimate goal of dressage: to work WITH your horse as one unit. Why use this practice when there are more gentle and effective ways to achieve results? Also, I find it amusing that you feel that they would not be allowed to use it if its hurting the horse, as if everyone in this industry follows the rules. Thats how crazy practices such as these get started. My horse would kick my ass if I did that. And I wouldn't blame her.
technically it is against the rules and edicate of dressage and does hurt the horse, and there is proof. I didnt even know about this till a few months ago and i was unbiased and now that i know more it is clear it is painful. If you would do research you would know.
@DanceOfDevotion So you don't think it hurts when they get all bloody in their mouths and their eyes are staring desperatley after any sort of rescue? No of course, they're not hurt at all. I've seen people ride like this with my own eyes, and I couldn't look without getting tears in my eyes. This is cruel.
did you hear about Dr.med.vet.Gerd heuschmann? Read his book, watch his film and then tell me, that Anky and co. are doing something good for theire horses!!
I just love when uneducated people who simply "follow the crowd" leave uneducated comments such as this. God, what is the equine industry coming to? Nay, what is this world coming to?
@Jaccko14 If you have read Podhajsky you'll know that the rollkur method has been tried several times during history but never lasted more than 50 years each time because people realises that the classical trained horses lasts longer. There is a reason the classical method has been around since the late Middle Ages/ early Renaissance.

SJR931 I strongly suggest you have a good read of an excellent website at sustainabledressage dot com
You obviously have no understanding of a horses anatomy and you are either naive or gullible if you think the few trainers and riders at the big end of town who ride rollkur know what they are doing.
When used correctly, it can make your horse more supple and more willing to go onto the bit. When theyre not streched out, your horse is stiff and not as responsive. I believe that the people in the Intermediare levels and Grand Prix level know what they are doing. They are experienced horse men ane women and have been around horses for their whole lives. If they didnt know what they were doing, they would not be where they are.
The answer to tension is stretch and not pull for bloody f*cks sake!
If you dont believe it I suggest we put a double bridle and a curb chain in YOUR mouth after you wake up with a stiff neck, pull your head on your chest and then see how relaxing and losening it is. GOSH!
steedrider - actually, put your head on your chest for 15 minutes, go do so areobics and stuff, it really helps your legs your ack and your neck, feels good and relaxes it heaps. IM SERIOUSE! GEE WIZZ!
This horse barely moves in his shoulders! There is no healthy swing to any of his movement.
I have a crank noseband only because it has the extra padding under the jaw and there is no buckle to skin contact...but I buckle it loosely. How is your horse supposed to be soft and chewy with his face banded shut.
I'd like to see some of these riders ride in snaffles, then we would see what they're really made of.
I agree, but there are other alternatives to using a crank noseband. Many cavessons come super padded, like redonculously, but I'm glad you buckle it loose (I hope it jiggles). And I've been saying this again and again, let's see these riders try this in a regular cavesson and snaffle. Someone is taking a trip to the hospital.
canterpir0uette - ive got a dvd of ankys, she uses hyperlfexion in a snaffle on one of the horses, dont believe mE? by the dvd of ankys called "her winning formula" and i have yet to see you compete at the weg or olympics you wanka ohh burn ive really hit the spot havent I!?
No you really haven't. Of course you don't see me competing at the WEG or Olympics. I don't have the horse, money, connections, etc. I've had plenty of severely bad experiences in the horse business, so I'm staying clear of it. And yes, I've seen Anky ride in pictures with a snaffle bit. I'll surely watch the video one day and observe it for myself.
good i hope you get the DVD and observe it. EXACTLY: you are steering clear of horses and blah blah blah. Which means you are not in a position to critisize the best riders in the world.
Well, I'll tell you why I'm steering clear of it. People take advantage, the money doesn't come on time to pay the bills, then my boss normally goes loco. I'm not going to stop riding, I love it too much, but working for the people has been a real pain in the rear =]
I had never even heard of this method until my friend mentioned it to me today. This is terrible. Is this done simply for quick results? When I warmup for a show, I'll warm up for 45 minutes if I have to get my horse where I want him... This makes me sad. =[
hyprerflexion - aka the quickest way to kill a horse. Can anyone repeat "laryngial paralysis"? It's what over bending does to animals, I should know, one of mine had it. Took months and months to teach him to work in a natural outline, and he'll never recover the use of his voice box.
not that i agree with this extreme use of rollkur, these horses can work in a natural outline. if they could not work poll high and slightly in front of the vertical they would be completely killed by the judges. this is warm up, not competition.
ugh it makes you want to be sick doesnt it? Crank noseband (done up none too loosely..), double bridle and it is any wonder they need spurs to get the poor things moving?! Shameful example of ''dressage''.
the point of spurs is not to accentuate the driving aid but to refine the leg aids so instead of reacting to the pressure of the calf, they respond to the pressure placed (not forcefully) by the spur. any horse that is ridden in spurs should just as easily be ridden without them, however spurs provide the amount of precision necessary to perform the more advanced movements.
im not anti-spur, i ride my mare in them occasionally for dressage i just dont agree with them being jabbed into the horse all the time. i use mine in the 'stroke' pattern i was taught.
There is nothing wrong with having the crank loose, although you are correct on that it wasn't made for that reason. Too much padding, too much pressure, pushing the sides of the horse's mouth into the teeth... bleh. Not splendid.
Haha oh sorry i was just curious, but actually i was just at the WEG this past week and i got a lot of footage of him and anky and a bunch of other riders in the warm-up too, so ill definitly post it!

Jaccko14 4 years ago
No you really haven't. Of course you don't see me competing at the WEG or Olympics. I don't have the horse, money, connections, etc. I've had plenty of severely bad experiences in the horse business, so I'm staying clear of it. And yes, I've seen Anky ride in pictures with a snaffle bit. I'll surely watch the video one day and observe it for myself.
canterpir0uette 4 years ago
good i hope you get the DVD and observe it. EXACTLY: you are steering clear of horses and blah blah blah. Which means you are not in a position to critisize the best riders in the world.
Jaccko14 4 years ago
Well, I'll tell you why I'm steering clear of it. People take advantage, the money doesn't come on time to pay the bills, then my boss normally goes loco. I'm not going to stop riding, I love it too much, but working for the people has been a real pain in the rear =]

so you are still riding? im confused, care to explain

I'm going to reply to you in a message instead of spilling my personal life on someone's poor comment area.

I had never even heard of this method until my friend mentioned it to me today. This is terrible. Is this done simply for quick results? When I warmup for a show, I'll warm up for 45 minutes if I have to get my horse where I want him... This makes me sad. =[
corpseburrito 4 years ago
Oh my... that's really all i can say. How can you seriously do that and not think, "Well, how would I like this?"

Can anyone tell me why these people win medals then, they should be whipped. Its so sad that dressage has come to this for the sake of a medal
pauline608 5 years ago
mmm i agree it is rather horrible-you dont need to flex tat much to be on the bit od you?
crazyperson14 5 years ago
This should be abuse. period.
SavvySmelly 5 years ago
hyprerflexion - aka the quickest way to kill a horse. Can anyone repeat "laryngial paralysis"? It's what over bending does to animals, I should know, one of mine had it. Took months and months to teach him to work in a natural outline, and he'll never recover the use of his voice box.
Hyperflexion = horse torture.
bundle087 5 years ago
not that i agree with this extreme use of rollkur, these horses can work in a natural outline. if they could not work poll high and slightly in front of the vertical they would be completely killed by the judges. this is warm up, not competition.

How can anyone put their horses that they love through this kind of training? Its disgusting and shouldnt be allowed!!
flintybaby 5 years ago
Uttlery disgusting practice - call that riding?
Frances144 5 years ago
ugh it makes you want to be sick doesnt it? Crank noseband (done up none too loosely..), double bridle and it is any wonder they need spurs to get the poor things moving?! Shameful example of ''dressage''.
CurlyWurlyRach 5 years ago
the point of spurs is not to accentuate the driving aid but to refine the leg aids so instead of reacting to the pressure of the calf, they respond to the pressure placed (not forcefully) by the spur. any horse that is ridden in spurs should just as easily be ridden without them, however spurs provide the amount of precision necessary to perform the more advanced movements.
nicander1998 4 years ago
im not anti-spur, i ride my mare in them occasionally for dressage i just dont agree with them being jabbed into the horse all the time. i use mine in the 'stroke' pattern i was taught.
CurlyWurlyRach 4 years ago
I don't agree with the rollkur, but, the crank noseband isn't suppose to be done loosely, thats why they call them a crank.
TWHEventer 4 years ago
There is nothing wrong with having the crank loose, although you are correct on that it wasn't made for that reason. Too much padding, too much pressure, pushing the sides of the horse's mouth into the teeth... bleh. Not splendid.
canterpir0uette 4 years ago
this is really neat, how did you get these behind the scenes videos?
Marytimes 5 years ago
By going to the publicly accessible warm-up arena and pointing a video camera at the rider???
jules183 5 years ago
Haha oh sorry i was just curious, but actually i was just at the WEG this past week and i got a lot of footage of him and anky and a bunch of other riders in the warm-up too, so ill definitly post it!
