It isn't slop... it's the truth... I've seen a lot of players in my life playing 4+ hours, playing the next day and winning comfortably... it's almost routine in the ATP...
Anyway, I was objecting to this, "Federer DOMINATED Nadal in the 2nd and 4th sets.. Verdasco never had an EASY set against Nadal, while Federer had 2" Federer didn't exactly get a fresh Nadal, now did he? Imagine what would've happened if he had met a fresh Nadal that day. I really think you're not giving Verdasco enough credit here. He played a brilliant match & I felt he took it to Nadal more than Federer did. Federer only had to face the scraps left over from that match. Color me unimpressed
Professionals are used to play gruelling matches... and Nadal, then the world No. 1, isn't the exception... besides he had more than 24 hours of rest, which should be enough... his semifinal against Verdasco didn't affect him for the final at all, it'd have been a difficult match anyway...
@mariomarcano There is no way that even professionals are used to playing the type of match Nadal and Verdasco played. The match was a record setter for the event. It was special. If you think Nadal was fresh as a daisy after the match, then there's no way you watched this match or the next. The rally seen in the video above is virtually how the whole match played out. You don't just bounce back from that and play another 5 setter without some fatigue.
Federer had more chances to win against Nadal than those that Verdasco had... Federer squandered 13 break points... Verdasco only 2 (of 4)... it was clear that Verdasco was only forcing, while Federer did have a real chance... just watch the 3rd set, a game where Federer squanders 5 break points (after being up 0-40)... had he won any of those points, he'd have won the match in 4 sets...
@mariomarcano Federer didn't have to take on a fully fresh Rafa, while Verdasco did. That's why I'm far more impressed by Verdasco's effort than Fed's. Rog was heavily favored to take down Nadal 2 seconds after the semi ended by anyone who was breathing at the time. It wasn't really hard to figure out why either. And It wasn't like Fed had to do all the heavy lifting like Verdasco did. Roger was getting scraps and he still lost. A bit disappointing when compared to an inspired, and on fire FeVer
@mariomarcano It's not an excuse. It was plain for all to see. Nadal was a physical & emotional wreck after the match & was a zombie for most of the final. Fernando really took it to him, ran Nadal around like a rabbit for over 5 hours. He was just 2 points away from serving for the match at 4-4, Love-30. Verdasco was only 6 points away from winning the whole thing! And Verdasco did all this against a fresh Nadal who hadn't dropped a set going into the semifinals. Very, very impressive.
yeah we thought he was at his best then......look how much better he is now!!! 2010 has been a phenomenal year for rafa! he's so much better now than when he won the AO even though he was AMAZING then too! it's scary to think this guy is only getting better! i love rafa!!! vamos (:
Nadal at his peak. You think you shot a ball to take the point and he goes for it, returns it and opponents just wonder... What the hell did just happen???
have no words to describe this point from rafa .. just brilliant ..mindblowing !!!!!!!! .. rafa was at his very best at the australian open 2009 .... no 1 could beat him except a federer at his very best ... badly federer wasnt at his best ...... all credit to rafa for that brilliant tournament ...
Is clear than not one in the planet would have beaten Nadal in Australia this year. The Grand Slam was his!! Verdasco was the toughest player on the tournament. Not-one could have lounged an attack more severe than Verdasco. He was ready for the big guy; he has walked over Tsonga and Murray to get to Rafa. These are the matches that really show us the true NADAL! These, the most difficult, most challenging & more contested matches will be part of Nadal's legacy!
You're the one who's wrong... Verdasco had to win 2 tiebreaks in order to get to the 5th set... even if Nadal crushed Federer in the 5th set, Federer DOMINATED Nadal in the 2nd and 4th sets... Verdasco never had an EASY set against Nadal, while Federer had 2... Verdasco was just forcing, while Federer had a real chance to win (in fact, if Federer had converted any of the 5 break points he had in a game during the 3rd set, he'd have defeated Nadal in 4 sets)...
@mariomarcano Yeah, but once Nadal got down in those sets, he more or less conceded them to conserve energy. Not unlike what Federer tried to do against Djokovic this year at the US Open, though that happened to backfire on him in the end. Strategically tanking sets is not that unheard of, esp. in best of 5.
It's nonsense... I remember Nadal not taking advantage of 5 break points in a game in the 4th set, which he easily lost 3-6... did he lost those to save energy?????????? LOL
@mariomarcano More or less, he wasn't going to kill himself to get back in those sets is what I'm saying. He saw the big picture. We're talking about a guy who was drained mentally and physically in a gruelling 5 hour, 5 set semi, you don't think conserving energy was part of the plan? He didn't play full force the entire 5 sets, he picked and choosed. He knew what he had in the tank and used it wisely.
@mariomarcano I said when he was DOWN, not when it's 2 all in the forth, because really that goes without saying. Of course, he wants to break right there and finish the match. If you seriously think he was going to waste energy by going full force at the end of sets he was down in just to make the score a little more respectable, then you're silly. He let 'em go and focused on the next sets and conserved what little energy he had. That's all I was saying.
@mariomarcano "did he lost those to save energy?????????? LOL" Look, you fuck up too. I'm so glad we can be grown ups about this and not make a big thing because that would be silly. :)
