@jessfoote That's true only for an open container. For a sealed bottle like this, you can superheat any water, because the pressure buildup inside the bottle stops the water from boiling.
You can superheat tap water in a clean smooth open container heated in a microwave or otherwise. You'll know it's superheated if, when you put the point of something sharp in it, it boils rapidly.
This video is different. The container is sealed and the water can reach a much higher temperature ~ the molecules can obtain much more energy ~ vibrate a greater distance ~ before she blows.
Of course there are other ways to blow up microwaves but this is the best I've seen.
Nice you can be the first in youtube to try this. i wounder what will happen if you take supercooled water and place it in a microwave oven and super heat it ?
The 80ml of water in the *sealed* container would have reached 100 degrees C in 36.6 seconds (assuming 750 watt output microwave and initial temperature of 18 degrees C) and 197 degrees C in 80 seconds - when she blew !
I was almost stupid enough to try this unknowingly it can blow up your microwave with my dorm microwave (the water bottle was frozen and I wanted it to warm up)
Water expands to 1700 times its original volume when boiled. If you used distilled water it could run the risk of superheating and consequently flash-boiling with lethal results.
this should never been done because anyone dumb and stupid enough to accuallly buy water is a moron, on top of that it cost any retailer their own expence to handle water bottle returns. retailers cant pull the expence of this out of their ass, so all you customers think about this everytime you return bottles or cans, it makes the cost everything else in the stores to be more expensive so allll the prices go up every time a new bottle bill goes into effect in Oregon!!
I never realized... Syrup bottles don't do that......they DO however start to liquify...viscous liquid and all that syrup is...tends to hold a lot more heat...
Every man must explode at least one microwave.

This sounds amazing through a home theater sysrem. The bass shook the house!

It's the pressure of the actual bottle being released that blows the door open, not the steam directly.

You can't superheat tap water. Only water with no impurities can be superheated.

Jory Caron needs this kind of filming equipment! Imagine watching an airbag deploy in a microwave at 940fps slowed down to 30fps!

So that's how to trash an old microwave oven.

Wow. It wrecked the entire microwave. Like the time I put a peeled hard boiled egg in the mecrowave. It blew up in my face. But it was cold.
