It can't be easy dealing with him in the springtime when he's getting new antlers, I bet -- not if if he tries to strip the velvet off the way in which wild deer generally do it. He is beautiful, though.
They're legally classified as livestock in some states, much like pet pigs and chickens. And you'd have to have the males fixed for your safety and theirs during mating season much like horses. Your buck does seems like a big sweetheart. Makes me wish I had the space for a pet deer. :)
@ContemporarySake They are mainly rescues who cant make it on there own, i think. Of course there would be some abandoned fawns though. An exotic animal farm i work at has a rescued male and female deer.
@boscoitalics it's different but you would never understand wild deer are dangerous a buck in a rut won't hesitate to rip you into shreds with his antlers they are very different from these fawns that are rescued when they are still little baby deer
@trainguy3 yes I know what they are but because hooves are hard when the walk on hard surfaces they make a clicking sound like a dress shoe would make
@minervatheEchidna Nope! They just picked up wild buck that spent his whole life living in the wild with little to no positive interaction with humans, brought him in and POOF he was domesticated and friendly just like that. ...No but seriously, think about your questions before you comment.
Love the deer, hate the people who post violent or bad humor posts. In response to housebreaking deer, I read one story which a doe was easily housebroken.
@fairylucyb ever heard of ignorance is bliss? if the deer was born in captivity or in a house than it would never want to go in the woods, cause in its mind they dont exist
@TrpDean I did not know the deer was born in captivity, but anyway I think it would be nice of you to create for your pet environment according to its nature. It still has hooves, It must be uncomfortable for him(her) to walk on the polished, shiny wood floor. It would be better for the deer to spend more time outside walking on grass.
@fairylucyb im not sure if he was born in captivity, just making the suggestion. and a dears hoves could be compared to fingernails in terms of feeling, so if a deer could handle stepping on the various thorns, jaggers, rocks, and sticks on the forest floor, im sure wood floor wont hurt
@TrpDean I'm sure that stepping on the polished, shiny wood floor wont hurt, but it might be slippery, especially walking on the fingernail - like hooves
My girlfriend just had a crazy idea. She says i should raise an elk and then ride it around the farm! Can anyone tell me if its possible to ride an elk?
