the first boat missed it and the second boat got hit by the other dumbass boat. these guys obviously don't know what they are doing they shoul'dve all run left. or the fish ladder.
our guide didn't take us down this for this reason pretty much. I would have loved it! One of the kids we had with us went through it in a Kayak and had never done it, but was smart enough to take the inside line against the rock and was fine... these people really didn't need to be on the left. Crazy. I've heard some bad stories from the guide from people getting cut up really bad through the meat grinder.
i have fallen out at the top of oak springs and hit my head on the rocks in the middle of the hole and then had to navigate through the "meat grinder" that shit hurts.
This is what happens when your guide doesn't know how to take the rapid. Oak Springs can be really nasty. Take it tight against the rock on the right, and paddle through the whole thing! Then you have to get up and keep on paddling through all the rocks. If you do it right you shoot through with no problem.
Oak Springs is bad because of the reef formations at the bottom. The rock is rough & sharp, which tears holes in boats and scrapes lots of knees and elbows. Rubber duckies and kayaks usually have no trouble because they can maneuver, but rafts, particularly paddle boats, have problems at Oak Springs.
We went over Oak Springs later in the season and stood the boat straight up in the air, but the water hit us so hard that Brian and I who were in the front got knocked all the way back to the river guide seat. When the water got up to our guide it knocked his hat at 20 feet up in the air...we later found it down river. We all stayed in the boat...just barely. Awesome ride from River Drifters!
Oak Springs was actually really bad this year. My own boat got stuck in the "Room of Doom" (eddy on the side after Oak Springs) and it took us three times to get out. I'm actually waiting for a video that my friend got of the guides of varius companies there trying to surf it at night. It's actually really cool (i was there :P).
