The landmark cases involved a white guy who attcked a black family ( ruled not hate crime, no jail) and a black guy who got into a fight with a white guy (ruled a hate crime:he did 7 years in a max. prison instead of 14 days in jail). Under Fed law couldn't even record an anti-gay crim as such. So act extended existing laws protecting people from crimes based on religion, race,&c. They do protect str8 people from being beaten by gangs of gays.
