  • do they actually put beer in the fish in england?

  • @Dunwritten In the batter, yup!

  • @Dunwritten yup thats why its beer batter

  • made this today, it was so good

  • @zachevans99

"If you don't have ale you can just use sparkling water as an alternative."

It's there in the video, you just need to listen a little closer. :)

  • Mmmmmmm!

  • whats the name of the fryer and do you have tips on how to purchase a good one, lol thanks :)

  • I want a fryer. oooooooooo

  • Seriously...so many of the questions that are asked are answered in the video! Just listen!

  • Guys his is really weird request Even if its Cold but i would like to see if know how to make a sorbet.. a raspberry sorbet.. Can you.??

  • @fahadN72 They have a raspberry ice cream, if that helps any! QUICK ICE CREAM RECIPE - SORTED.

  • Hi sorted food, Do you have to use a beer in the batter?

  • Hi Sorted, I'm in student accommodation, so is there a way of making this without the deep fat fryer?

  • @davidharrison1992 yup, you can use a frying pan with oil... but you need to keep a close eye on it!

  • Looks good. We are going to eat Fish And Chips soon, but a little different.

  • after you fry the chips of fish if you put it on a kitchen roll the chips or fish will just sit in its own oil

you're supposed to put it on a cooling rack of a sheet pan

  • Okay that's it! I have to go to England soon, there just SOOO many things i have to taste... English breakfast... Fish and chips... Ben´s lips... Can anyone tell me were the Sorted food kitchen is?? ;D

  • do you have to use beer? im thirteen but i am a foodie

  • @boominlyrics you can replace the beer with fizzy water! :-D

  • @boominlyrics you could also buy alcohol free beer, thats what i use

  • my fish starts to go soggy after its been cooked.. not straight away but about 3-5 mins after?

Anyone can tell why this happens?

  • The great thing about cooking is that nothing can really be defined as a dish typically from one country. Like fish and chips. The portuguese were really the first with the idea to fry fish in a batter. ;) I just love how the Brits accepted all the great ideas about cooking from loads of different countries ! Sorted is awesome ;D

  • Make beef wellington! (:

  • can i use chicken for the beer batter?

  • Do Americans call it "fish and fries"?

I live by the seaside so I just go to the chippie on the beach.

  • @PirateIs1337 I can only speak for Canadians but we call it fish and chips too

  • @PirateIs1337 depends on where you are, where i am its called fish filet and fries

  • I take it your temperature are in Celsius? And for the fries I bake them first and then cut them up and put some potatoe starch on them to get them crispy. My favorite beer for this is Guinness.

  • am i the only one who laughed when he said "i've had many a bishops finger in my time"

  • I think this is the only video I've watched that Ben said "what the hell".

  • Love seeing you guys eat your food at the end of every video. :)

  • would this work for chicken?

  • Dear England,

we give you props to fish and chips. Because you do it better than we do.

    Sincerely, America <3

  • pretty sure it's a new zealand thing. not UK.

  • Comment removed

  • I can't believe someone wud eat a dead fish

  • @Liam2621 do you prefer live fish

  • @whoajulie prefer fruit and vegetables, stuff like that

  • @Liam2621 then why are you watching a recipe video on how to cook "fish" and chips..... ?

  • @whoajulie i like chips

  • Just moved into my new flat so me and my flat mate are living by Sorted recipes, thank you @sortedfood for keeping us alive :)

  • What's the difference between chips and French fries? As an American i always thought Brits just called fries chips...

  • @proudn00b77 for us french fries are thin, where as chips are thicker:)

  • @kirstenerlam Ah I see...thanks!

  • Thank you for this, I miss fish and chips so much, I'm going to show this to my dad so he can make them for me, haha. He's the english one, so he should do it ;)

  • Why do I find it highly amusing that you put Haddock into beer? Guess the two are truly meant to be!

  • i like it

  • Or if you're from the north you chuck away the Tartare Sauce and stick some mushy peas or gravy on there! Delicious! Good work, guys.

  • I just made these for the second time in a week, they are lovely! I accidentally left out the vinegar the second time around but I still got a lovely crispy coating. And @HeresToARandomName if you can't use beer use sparkly water (Ben said so in the video too :P) you need the fizzyness to make the batter gorgeous.

  • BARRY IS SO CUTE <3

  • If you don't have a fryer, can you just fry the fish in a large, 2-inch deep pan ?

  • Is there a non-alcoholic substitute for the beer, for those of us with dietary restrictions? I've been craving fish and chips like mad but can't consume anything with alcohol ):

  • @HeresToARandomName i think you can just leave the beer out altogether i think google it but im sure you can just leave it out :-)

  • @matstar102 That's good to know! Thank you :D

  • @HeresToARandomName i might be wrong but im sure u can leave the beer cos i dnt wanna eat owt with alcohol in it too ;-)

  • @HeresToARandomName As they said in the video, use "sparkling water" as in carbonated water. The co2 in the beer and the carbonated water helps the batter to stay light and crispy.

  • For some reason, the fish and chips don't remind me of the seaside.

They remind me of getting off the bus on the way home from school with about four other people, it's dark and the street lights are on, it's raining, and it's freezing, and I get a cone full of fish and chips from the chip shop, which are hot.

    SO. GOOD.

Eh… seaside fish and chips will always be better, though. XD

  • do you have to use beer in the batter??? is there anything else you can use instead???

  • @HonorKicksButt Sparkling water :)

  • hi sorted.. can you tell us the best way to make a tartare sauce? :D

  • @ayinn111 We did a quick run through of a tartare sauce in our fish finger sandwich recipe, which you can find on our website :-)

  • @sortedfood thanks alot! now im sorted.. :D

  • "Dripping Bishops Finger" brilliant :P

  • @iRemixedxX Not originally... although we've kind of made it our own and you can now find a chip shop in just about every village and town!

  • @sortedfood You can also find an Indian curry shop in similar frequency, but it doesn't make you Indian :P

  • @sortedfood fair enough i guess :)

  • @iRemixedxX Most British food isn't really British, but they got recipes from all over the world because of their colonies... but you could say that "fish'n chips" is more British now while it is so popular over there...

By the way, I'm not British so I'm not trying to defend it, I'm just stating a fact.

  • love fish and chips but they have so many fat because of all the oil :( is there a more healthy alternative?

  • @Goanna1993 Of course, you can bake the chips in the oven...however the fish batter really needs to be fully submerged in oil to get the flavour/texture right.

  • @Goanna1993 GOOD fats are only a problem if you have digestive issues; if that is the case, the best alternative is to make a crispy breading and spritz (there are pumps that do it best; I do NOT recommend "cooking sprays" like PAM) oil evenly around... things like cornmeal&panko make a nice outer coating ... but it's still not going to be the fluff. What to minimize-what causes weight gain-are SUGARS,NO juice (min. alcoholic drinks=same problems+neural death). It's about OVERALL consumption.

  • brilliant. i've done this to chicken as well, for lack of fish.

  • I have made this with cod and it was absolutely delish. Thank you.

  • Fish fingers & custard > Fish & Chips

  • Comment removed

  • I see what you did there... Fish AND Chips, have a nobel prize.

  • can you make pancakes

  • Oh my god this looks Amazing!

Too bad I'm about to order Fish 'n' Chips from the takeaway ^^

  • I tried it, and it went really well, and I am not really the best at cooking, thanks guys!

  • GET SMOSH ON THIS PPPLLLLEEEAAAASSSSEEEE

  • Is it possible to NOT fry your fish and chips? Nothing against frying, its just that I want to make it for my mom but she cannot eat anything fried. Any alternatives?? (I love this recipe and so did she before she couldn't eat anything fried)

  • @PleineLaLune It won't taste the same, but you can always "oven-fry". Instead of batter, you use breadcrumbs, and you bake it in a screaming hot oven. I've made Chicken Parmigiana this way for a while, and if I recall that recipe correctly, it was at 425F for 15 to 20 minutes. You may need a little oil for flavor, but it is VERY crispy.

  • I vote you guys make a trifle sometime soon.

  • @holyking1100 they suggested that instead of alcohol you can use sparkling water

  • if you dont have any alcohol..what can you use?

  • Gonna try to do this recipe tomorrow! I have wanted to do a proper fish and chips meal for a long time but haven't found a good enough recipe until i saw this one. So wish me good luck and hope that i don't fail because then my english side of the family will be disappointed ;)

  • @LovelyChirrup Give it your best shot and I'm sure they won't be disappointed! All the best and let us know how you get on! :D

  • @sortedfood It went really well! I served it to my friend who had never eaten fish and chips, and he loved it! :)

So i can say I succeeded at making fish and chips. Thanks for the recipe.

  • Thank you for the recipe i did fish n chips today tasted AWSOME!!!

    Thanks from sweden! :)

  • is this like marco pierre white's version?

  • Making this by your instructions for my 4 roommates tonight. Much love from America!

  • @cydereal Awesome... how did it go?

  • @sortedfood It went great! As good as any I remember having in London. Twice frying the chips really did it too, that's a lesson to keep. About 45 minutes of cooking for 10 pieces of fish and a mixing bowl of chips for five hungry guys.

  • this makes me hungry...

  • Jamie has lost weight!

  • Ahhh, I'm from Britain too, and I used to eat fish and chips at a pier and watch the boats. XD Then I made this and it felt just like that xDD They tasted very traditional and really tasty. :D

  • Please make me some fish and chips. It's my birthday soon, I'll be 18 on the 10th. Love ya :)

  • Do you ever need to re- take any video?:D Like is fail and you have to remake something again?:P

  • @sortedfood can you also cook the fish in a frying pan?

  • A recipe without beer? Please? Or something to replace the beer

  • that looks soooo goood !

  • Comment removed

  • @donbaza haha... if we let the camera run normally and left in all the boring bits (hand washing and clearing down mess) then it'd get kind of boring. But yes, hands are always washed before and often during filming.

  • Comment removed

  • @sortedfood Thank you for all your hard work!! Can I please request Cinnamon rolls?

  • Oh this makes me miss home on The Rock in Birmingham!

  • Can you bake this in the oven instead of frying? Or maybe pan frying? I love the look of this but I really wanted to avoid deep frying.. :x

  • dank

  • WHAT?! NO VINEGAR?! CRIMINAL!

  • @voguey123 haha I know rite! got to have the vinegar! & i never hear of this cones where im from we got our fish and chips in old news papers

  • How do you feel about Bread Flour for batters? Does it make it too gluteny?

  • @DeathAngelsFury that sounds delicious! I think i'm going to try chicken too!

  • Do you guys have fulltime jobs outside of this? I hope you'll be able to make a great living off of this soon enough!

  • Tell the guy in the middle, he isn't funny.

  • I was wondering, could I make this with chicken instead? I'm not really a fish person.

  • ok i saw you at green park today for the second time n i never say hello ¬¬ if i see you again its my mission to say hey lol.

  • @jameskiid haha... who was it you saw? Barry, Ben or Jamie? And next time please do pop and say hi.

  • @sortedfood it was barry and ben lol

  • does anyone know what appliance they're using here to batter the fish and fry the chips--looks so versatile? usually when my mom makes fries the oil splatters all over the place (Quite scary - -;)

    anyways. i want it *__________*

  • @many1mm Here in Ireland/UK they are called Deep Fat Fryers ... they have a thermostat to control the temperature of the oil!! They are really handy and do make great chips (fries) :)

  • In next week I'm going to make a three course menu for my friends and I, but I don't know how to put together a proper menu.. Can you guys please help me? (:

    Thx :D

Btw i'm 15, so it can't be anything with alcohol..

  • @mussaxoxo Hey there... I can make a suggestion... but it's all down to personal taste and what you'd prefer. how about "Cheesy Stuffed Mushrooms" to start, then "Chicken Tray Bake" and "freezecake" to finish. The freezecake can be made the day before and stored in the freezer to make the cooking easier on the day.

  • @sortedfood That's sounds soo good, thanks :D

  • I really like your videos ! - could you perhaps consider doing some vegetarian dishes? :)

  • Dear Sorted food, i haven't seen any chinese food nor do i know how to make any could you show how to make something chinese anything will do :D

  • Can i do this in a pan if i don't have a fryer? Or a pot? And how would I do it?

  • So we had chips today, and usually my nana just cooks them straight away, but I told her about the twice fried, and she decided to try it out. They were the best chips I've ever tasted. Thank you for the tip we definitely had some really tasty chips!

  • you guys should make an epic meal time parody

  • Have you ever tried Chicken Rice from SINGAPORE? I SWEAR you have to try it! Come to SINGAPORE to sort the food HERE! <3

  • can you please please please do a recipe for caramel shortcake bites. like the ones from sainsbury. i'm from malaysia and you can't get sainsbury here (obviously) and my parents brought these back and i'm seriously craving them right now.

  • I know the stove wasnt on, but every time he put his hand on it i got nervous

  • i have to stop watching you guys when i'm starving...

  • 0.59 you say plain flour but you recipe says self-raising flour (125g)

can you confirm which it is ?

  • @001razz Self-rasing actually gives you an even lighter batter... decided it was best after filming! :S

  • @sortedfood

thanks......thats dinner sorted when i get home.

keep up the good work guys

  • could you please make an epicmealtime parody? :)

  • Did you know? Cooking with alkaline water improves the taste and quality of foods and using acidic water when boiling eggs improves their quality... Visit my channel for more information!

  • do lamp chops.

  • how can it be a British Meal with French Fries??

  • @DonSleightholme firstly the brits call them chips, secondly french fries were made in belgium, thirdly chips are different to french fries - they are thicker and are made of REALLY good quality potatoes and lastly it didn't take an idiot to decide to fry potatoes so therefore there is no real origin of them LOL XD

  • DO MORE VEGETARIAN FOOD RECIPES :D

  • I watched this then only at the end remembered I had fish chips earlier tonight, nit the best still pretty nice though

  • Try to do a Venezuelan dish!

  • I hate bitter but in a batter it tastes so dapper I could eat a whole plater!!!

  • Everytime I heard "we in the UK do..." I was like "do we actually do that"???

  • now i want fish and chips lol

  • What if we aren't from Britain and cannot find these this "Bishops Finger" ale?? (from the US, california specifically). what kind of beer should we use?

  • @hijakaftoyl the alcohol type!

  • @hijakaftoyl Based on what I saw on holiday over there, best you could hope for is Samuel Adams Black Lager or Scotch Ale. But tbh, your probably better looking for another British Ale, Lager, Bitter or IPA (not Stout or Cider though). Particularly if you can find Bombardier or Punk Dog

  • @hijakaftoyl Just ask a local supermarket for a strong but sweet beer!!!

  • The video says to use plain flour, but the recipe on the website says self raising. Which should i use?

  • I actually prefer my chips with the skin on

  • I'm vegetarian, but for fun used your batter and made "British" Tempura. Used organic beer locally brewed, called Hoptoberfest, that I buy by the growler at a local organic bodega. Delish!
