  • Amazing!

  • I saw him recently at Ronnie Scotts. We had front-and-centre tables. At his age, I hope illl still be able to button my shirt, but he can still set the fretboard on fire..

  • When I look back, I can't help this feeling that John's acoustic solo in that period (such as Shakti) even has more fire, as compared to his recent works, albeit still excellent. Anyway, his playing has been evolving over the years, a Supreme Master, nonetheless. Thanks for posting.

  • I feel someone is walking over my grave, every time I here it. Thanks for this exceptional video!

  • Muy Bueno" La Musica , el Unico Idioma Universal" . gracias por el post .

  • AWESOME MUSIC, PLAYERS!!!! TOMMY CAMPBELL ON DRUMS!!!

    Katia on Keys is GORGEOUS!

  • Nice way to play the synclavier Kathia, John with a singular spanish guitar, what great is this my God!

  • Reeeeeeeeeeeeerrrgreat!!!!!!

  • Katia Labecque, JM's former wife on the Synclavier

  • John never ceases to amaze me with all the various types of music he can play and master ! Infriggingcredible ! Great video and composition ! thanks for the post !

  • Katia Labeque - Mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • What album is this from?

  • @ricaard from 'Music spoken here'.

  • @bazonics Thanks, I'm on it!

  • i love John's slutty shirt.

  • @underage4page yeah, nice observation!

  • Sweet video! great use of Synths and jazz guitar!

    A classic

  • John Improvises his solo- Katie plays exactly the same thing every time- John wrote out all her parts. The unison line he wrote in a cab on the way to the studio when they went to record this piece.

  • @neilslade Yeah sure. Another urban myth.

  • Yeah sure- Except I know the guy who rode in the cab with him.

  • And the fellow who moved into his ex-Grenich Village apt. when when he split NYC for France, and left his Gold Record for BIrds of Fire hanging on the wall- cause he didn't care for the music bus. in the grand USA

  • Pat Oliver was a school chum of mine at the University of Colorado at Denver. Among our fellow students was Bill Frissell, someone whom I played with from time to time, a graduate of East High School where I still live down the street. Pat and Bill both moved, Pat taking up in NYC where he became friends with Mitchel Forman, who eventually teamed up with John years later.

  • The thing was, Katia was a classical musician, unlike Pat and Mitch, and she couldn't improvise at the level John and all the other French musicians could, and so John ended up writing out all her parts, to the relief of all. If you listen to her solo and compare it with the record- same thing.

  • the piano would sound better if the chick was naked

  • His tone is better now.

  • i had this concert (UK ITV late night broadcast) on video at one time when i was about 11! I only knew him at the time for the Paco de Lucia trio. I taped over it with an AC-DC concert. I could have committed hari kari when i realised what a great musician he is. And what an insult snubbing him with AC-DC - what a foolish child!!!! I have never forgiven myself for this ...

  • Katia LeBecque

  • Katia Labecque...great french pianist(classical)

she often play with her sister maria

  • McLaughlin's on fire here. More so than usual.

  • who is the pianist?

  • Francois Couturier だよ

    ちなみに Bassは Jean Paul Celea

    Drumsはバークリーから青田買いした

    Tommy Campbell だ

  • Correct me if i'm wrong, but i think John's shirt cannot get any more undone.

  • @superhube who cares? he's soloing the hell out of that guitar and you think about his shirt?

  • One of the best things about music in general is pure freedom of artistic expression. The problem with today's mindset is that it has to be a contest. This whole "Who's the best" mentality is unhealthy as it stiffles creativity.Music is not a sport! Besides,it is not fact, but only a matter of personal opinion.Shouldn't every individual be appreciated on their own merits? That's the beauty of musicology...Must say that John McLaughlin is a master of the art,a true living guitar legend

  • that unison runs with piano are killing me..

  • fuck sake, are u guys actually comparing guitarists, not on music or style but on guitar tricks? thats pathetic and childish-"oo my daddy is better than ur daddy because he is taller.." if u are judging the merrits of a musician and decide to ignore his/her style and musical material (both are quite fundamental in determining how good the player is)then u deserve to be shot and ur ears shud be cut off because u dont deserve to listen to music at all. Good day

  • SRV has a style and JM has his "styles" but guitar ability? take "belo horizonte" and "A handful of Beauty", I think nobody has those fingers. JM is number one in guitar tecnique, thats very clear"

  • so...we're saying an apple is superior to an orange because of.....why?

  • Apples taste sweeter and don't have the acidic content that oranges do, that's the difference between SRV and John, John's the orange, he's good but can be to acidic, SRV is the apple, always sweet and always good.

  • are you guys serious? SRV's music has wayyyyy more high note bends and vibrato, so he is CLEARLY more emotional

  • stupid statement

  • oh facial expressions too SRV has better facial expressions! all hail blues god SRV!

  • müziğin müzik olduğu zaman.Çok sevdim

  • you can not compare two totally different musicians. Music is not about compatition anyway.

    (john McLaughlin is better!!!!)

  • John's the greatest but... who is she???

  • John is number one for spirituality, passion, grace and ferocity. Nobody goes out on a limb like this man.

  • A friend of mine says that jazz guitarists are the best in the world because many can play different styles outside their genres, and maybe they are, but while john is good, alot of the times he's just speed picking, no real feeling therefore i say stevie ray vaughan will rule forever.

  • Friend:

The many styles of jazz that Mclaughlin plays and the many styles of blues and rock that Vaughan played are so different -- like comparing apples and oranges. Let's just say that both men are superb in their own chosen ways? I am happy when I listen to either of them.

  • Are you stuck on 1 kind of feelings? McLaughlin has tons...

  • I'm not disagreeing that McLaughlin has feeling in his own way, it's just something about someone playing fast that in my eyes doesn't give the player much room for feeling but is more of a thought process. In this song he just plays so fast, sometimes it's better to slow it down and let it flow out.

  • It's not like he doesn't do that. If I listen to SRV I get annoyed because doesn't have the abilities on the guitar. I love John Mclaughlin's music because it's John Mcalughlin's music not because it's like SRV.

  • wow you get annoyed listening to SRV? that's fine his music isn't for everyone, but just watch stevie's performance of texas flood at the el mocambo, and tell me he isn't an incredible guitar player and "doesn't have the skills on the guitar". Then show me John's best video here and compare guitar skills, not the music or the style, just the guitar ability.

  • wow you get annoyed listening to John Mclaughlin? that's fine his music isn't for everyone, but just watch john's performance of dawn at syracuse university, and tell me he isn't an incredible guitar player and "doesn't have the feeling on the guitar". Then show me Steve's best video here and compare guitar skills, not the music or the style, just the guitar ability.

  • Impressive - you took what i wrote, reposted it but just changed some words around, you must be some sought of genius. I watched the video and theres no way that was anywhere near Stevie's guitar abilities, Mclaughlin at his best wouldn't have been good enough to carry Stevie's suitcases to the airport let alone be compared to him.

  • Oh okay.

  • How ridiculous

  • SRV isnt comparable to the great john mclaughlin

  • The great Tommy Campbell on drums and cymbals...awesome

  • Has to be one of my favorite all time Mclaughlin clips. Katia sure is smoking! This is known as the Belo Horizonte band. Antibes, 1982.

  • lovely

  • Lovely simple, nice yellow shirt. John is simply "himself".

  • I wonder what sex was like between them?

  • lighting fast, but very long.

  • fantastic...John Mclaughlin is the best period! and his girlfriend is incredible as well...and cute as hell LOL

  • wowww, they both are too speedy

  • Katia and John were the perfect pair. Anyone who could reach McLaughling in speed could only be her. In some takes Katia looks like a vampire.

  • GOOOOOD...THANKS

  • HE plays fast because that's what the hell he DOES! Why do people want to go to where a guy plays a certain way and complain ALL the time? We don't complain about slow players, we just change the channel.

  • That just plain smoked!

  • He met the perfect woman - someone with as many chops as him.

She's great. Yeah, Syncla is a bit dated now but at the time was

    state of the art.

  • i have a 1 hour video of Mahavishnu he is one of my favorite guitar players, along with Scofield, Metheny, Jim Hall, etc...

  • putz...muito legal!

qual o nome da tecladista?? katia??

de que ano sera esse video ??alguem sabe?

  • http://www.katialabeque.com to hear what she's up to now. :)

  • Oh boy if my keyboard player looked at me like that (the one without the moustache) and played like that I would cut the long solos, play shorter sets and...

  • 'They may be lovers but the idea that you would know this from the video is preposterous'.

Chill out dude, just a light hearted comment.

  • I feel the passion between them.

  • thanks for this. katia playing a "first generation" Synclavier keyboard--not even velocity-sensitive. Synclaviers now in the dustbin of history. Helps that there are 3 other acoustic instruments to compliment somewhat crappy Synclav sound. Boy do they have chops! Great stuff, but why does Mc play so fast ALL the time? They may be lovers but the idea that you would know this from the video is preposterous.

  • "Power, Passion and Beauty: The Story of the Legendary Mahavishnu Orchestra" by Walter Kolosky.

    Allaboutjazz.com says:

"Kolosky has finally righted a wrong, delivering a book that is as factual an account of the group's rise and fall as will likely ever be published…”

Walter Kolosky says: …it is my turn to pay the music back. “Power, Passion and Beauty” is my offering."

  • WOWWWW!!! AWESOME! I am love with the Keyboardist.

  • I prefer Escalator over the hill and Lifetime!

  • they're both great, no problem. JM never stay's still though, always the seeker. I can't think of another musician who's been through the changes he has. Much better than playing the same old - once fresh now stale

riffs - for the last 30 years, no names mentioned. carlos s... oop's.

  • Ok, shure, I like this tune as well, was once in Spain and Belo Horizonte was the only tape in the car...so it reminds to Bilbao etc, those streets in the mountains in the night with the only thing visible the red lights of the cat in front of you

  • lol

  • Well I do. Judging from this video, I bet Katia would tear that arse up. Lucky John!

  • Nice job man! By the way, earlier I was trying to refer to Windows Movie Maker in order to edit stuff. I think its different for Apple...

  • Yeh, I love this period of JM's career. My MO files are all on 'VOB' and they're HUGE!, like approaching 1gig. I assume it's a 'lossless' format. Is there anyway I can convert them to something smaller? tks.
