this kind of performance and composition is what America's all about. Most patriotic songs and their performances are extremely tonal, rigid, by-the-book, traditional, and cover no new ground anywhere. It doesn't make sense to express freedom and liberty that way; but THIS is true, heartfelt American music!
I must say I think Ives would have love this spirited and fun version of his pro-populist, anti-politician song. Above all Ives loved juxtaposing the profound with "burlesque" pieces intended to burst the bubble of pretentious art critics. Thank you SO MUCH for posting such a fun version of Ives' raucous song~!
What were these performers and posters thinking?! They turned Ives' sincerely held beliefs into a burlesk--childish, sarcastic nonsense. Ives was not a great singer (!), but I don't understand how these clowns didn't GET IT at all! Look up and hear the real Ives song here on YouTube, search THEY ARE HERE IVES. Sorry, kiddies, but Ives was not one of you silly lot, but a real man who actually loved his country.
@njsouthie: Hey now, who's to say these guys don't love their country too? The cover is a bit tongue-in-cheek, but it's sincere in a way Ives might well have appreciated. The original score to this song has none of the ridiculous mistakes Ives's own recording has—he disregarded his own notation in favor of a fervent keyboard-bashing fest. The way these guys slam-strum their guitars and scream is the same sentiment and approach, just filtered through today's popular music. It really works.
Oh man, I've been meaning to do a version like this of that song for years now, you beat me to it. Fantastic. I always considered that recording of Ives to be the first punk rock song.
I'm sure this would have brought a smile to Ives' face. Great, fun performance!

As an Ives fan, and after many viewings and much consideration, I believe this is my favorite performance of any song in the history of the universe.

The punk aesthetic is dead on. At first, watching this video, I thought, "oh, good grief." Then I realized Ives would probably be proud.
