also here is the break down of the cost according to Apple. This varies based upon what is wrong. The repair cost is $339 to replace the gloss hinge (without warranty). If the damage is internal it is (best case scenario) $377, worst case $525. You can get a PC with that money. It is frustrating!!!!
I had that issue and went in. The employee who took my computer was uncaring about my worries. The hinge is the weak point, the Achilles heel of the computer and easily damaged. I have an extended warranty on my computer, but the employee was basically saying it was my fault that the computer hinge was broken and that he thought I had dropped my computer (therefore negating the warranty coverage). I have the ID of the employee and I encourage you to stay away from him: 298502898
I totally ignored hinge noises like those until finally it completely snapped from the back cover.. The glass screen protector kind of detached from the screen itself and cracked..not good at all.
All you need to do is realign the hinge cover underneath the silver MacBook Pro logo. It isn't fixated by screws like on PowerBooks, it's loose so it can go left an right and that's what makes it crack.
@snoooters How did you grease the hinge exactly? Could you post your own video for that? Mine does this and I stripped the laptop apart (separated the screem from the base) and don't see a real way to get at the clutch/black hinge area to actually grease it). Thanks!
This is why they have the Apple Care program...I know its kinda lame to gamble 300 dollars away for 3 years. Especially if your Laptop has zero problems, but I'd pay the extra 3 hundred for the piece of mind knowing that if anything happens, The "genius'" will take care of it for me.
I feel for you dude! Mine makes a creaking noise which I can live with! But not as bad as that! Have you tried some lubricant were the hinge is??? I'm surprised they didn't do anything!
@PSPAditya Damn, this really sucks. Last week I went to the Apple store and one of the 13 inch Macbook Pro had that problem with the hinge. I felt it when I closed the laptop. The 15 and 17 inch models are perfect without any problems with the hinge to my knowledge. They really need to fix this problem and hopefully they'll redesign the Macbook Pro for the next refresh.
Mine does this when i open the screen... i push it back a little to open it then when i let go the screen makes a snapping noise FROM THE RIGHT hinge... so basically it happens when ever i move the screen back which is annoying. Also, without being dropped, i am noticing a dent or warp.. something sticking up a little.. just under the right hinge on the plastic above the F keys. whats going on :(
Can't believe there are many threads and videos over the internet regarding this, and Apple still doesn't do a damn thing about it. I had a 15" Macbook Pro with this problem and i recently i switched to the new MID-2010 17" Macbook Pro, hoping that they had fixed something, but i was wrong. Even mine has the same problem. They won't replace it, neither repair it because it regularly meets Apple's quality standards! I'm done with them and their "superior" quality stereotype.
This just happened to my 13" uMBP, I took it to the apple store, the tech said that they can't just replace the hinge, rather, they have to replace the whole screen. Luckily it was under warranty. I don't mind either, the top had an unsightly scratch that I rather my MBP didn't have anymore =3
Mine does exactly the same thing!! DOES anyone here on the left hand side at the back near the hinge have a larger gap on left (when it is closed) than on the right like in this video when he said it is angled?! When you are looking at it from the back it would be the right hand side. I am really worried and I am thinking of taking it to apple, I bought it is feb 10, would they do anything?! I know that it is still covered under warranty because I looked at support on the apple website!! HELP!
Also I have a fix (not fully but massively helps (ie the clicks are not anywhere near as loud) is to use a cotton bud/Q-tip (in the UK Q-Tips are cotton buds) and apply a _Small_ amount of petroleum jelly (aka lip balm) to the right hinge (with the laptop screen open) and work the screen back & forward. It works for me =D
Just add some lubrication to the right side of the hinge. I had the same problem, took it to the apple store twice and they didn't fix it. Added some lube and bam, problem solved.
mine does that as well but i was told to keep opening and closing the lid. apparently the hinges are self lubricating and if you keep opening and closing they self lube. i think the main thing is it does work. u just have to open and close the lid a lot of times.
hey for anyone out there who has a 13 inch macbook pro... umm when you pick your laptop up or move it does it make a clicking noise or chirping noise? i hear it at the right of my trackpad and i know that it's not my harddrive because they already replaced it once... so is it normal???
@geekint0sh wrong.... when i replaced the hard drive ( a different brand) it didn't make that sound anymore... i called apple about 3 months ago and they said some of their hard drives were faulty... tsk tsk..
The sound my MacBook Pro makes when it is suddenly moved (heavily), it makes a "click" sound. If it's moved like any normal person would move there's no sound.
mine too! the crrrr. i googled saying hinge noise.. but "crrr" sums it up perfectly. i was thinking its cuz i havent been wiping my screen down. for some reason. but uhh, did u get it fixed? mine does crrr every time. ONLY when its FULLY closed then trying to open it.
i know.. and plus if my mac was not working i would not worryed because i know that there is awsome CS and good polcies.. and with a shit PC i would be F***ED cuz the CS is shit and parts are made in so many places but i dont need to worry cuz macs rule and PCs suck.. ive never met one person who got a mac and wanted to switch back to PCs
Hmmm... I have a 17" macbook pro. Haven't had a single problem with it yet. (Sort of, its almost like thers paint on it and its peeling between the trgf keys, looks like white regular macbook plastic too...) Oh shit nevermind lol. Its just a bit of dirt and a really clean spot in the middle of it haha my bad. (Yay!) :)
hmm then y am i and tons of other people happy with our macs and would never consider another PC again?? hmm i wonder.. o yeah they r the best computers unless ur a hardcore gamer or programmer
Yeah, same thing happened with my compaq laptop. Now the clicking stopped, but the screen has no support and falls if it's moved a little. I'm gonna tear it apart and use it as a media laptop whenever I buy my new computer.
It could be lose and anymovement might be either losing it up either more or its just stuck... is it getting harder to open.. like it has more pressure holding it down/up?
