Brilliant....Guitar playing is fantastic. The drums are something too!!...I love the way they make them roll from left to right and right to left in the speakers. All the music is brilliant what a fantastic piece of music.
Years ago I saw Duane Eddy open a Ry Cooder show at the Catalyst in Santa Cruz, CA. 90% of the crowd came for Ry Cooder, but by the end of the night Duane Eddy owned 'em. Crowd reaction stuck with me. These two young kids (college age) were in awe of Duane Eddy. One remarked: "I never knew you get that kind of sound out of a guitar - How does he do it?" My reply: "One word kid: Talent."
this a prime eg. of why lil missi cotten (alone) is/was better than any army of peeps, drum samples...throw in the brass.??``..only good here, are the vocals(wink x2)
sry Brent bro, u got a grt channel but i just clicked to this from the original and am in a state of shock.
Duane Eddy's guitar -- always great. So much of what surrounds it on too many songs is, let's face it... CRAP. Overdone and generic-sounding. A simple tune like Freight Train does not need horns. Some '60s Chet Atkins is like this too. Really nice guitar, then a horrid burst of unnecessary 'Yakety-Sax.' Duane, Chet.. should be all guitar. The dated 'sweetening up' is hard to listen to.
Sounds like a 4 track mid-60's recording, everything's recorded in mono - including the drums - and simply panned during the stereo mix - though there's some guy twisting the pan knob during the 'The Quaalude Thunder'. ( Frank Zappa's term )
For sick fun, I should download said 'thunder', and jam it through stoopid amounts of compression and 'verb.
Les Paul had all his fingers. He was in a car accident and injured his right (picking) elbow, and it was basically bolted at the proper angle to play his guitar. That might what you're referring to. "After the crash, doctors told Paul that they'd have to set his arm such that he would not be able to bend it again. He had them position his arm at a ninety degree angle so he could still play guitar". (From Wikipedia)
No, Les Paul sure didn't invent the electric guitar. Not much invention there anyway...just put a mic (pickup) in an acoustic. But Les Paul did build one of the first solid body guitars, trying to get around...feedback. "In 1941, Paul designed and built one of the first solid-body electric guitars (though Leo Fender also independently created his own solid-body electric guitar around the same time, and Adolph Rickenbacher had marketed a solid-body guitar in the 30s)." (Wikipedia)
I read quite a while ago the Eddy was a pretty accomplished blues finger picker, in the John Hurt/Libby Cotten style. Just because that wasn't his bread and butter doesn't mean a musician can't do other styles.
I guess there isn't anyone out there old enough to have heard of a fellow named Les Paul. What makes them all great isn't whether they are better than anyone else, but that they all have their own distictive style.
I remember Les Paul and Mary Ford quite well..Les used to crack bubble gum sometimes when recording his music...It can be heard on some of his recordings as a loud crack in the background.
OK, so Duane wasn't the best guitarist around - but he made some great records; very much of the time but a great sound. No matter how many better guitarist I hear, Duane will still hold a special place with me and a special place in music history
actually duane was a very good guitarist if you listen to his chet atkins style of finger picking you will hear an exceptional guitarist...as for his twangy sound..well it made hime money..easy to play but it is what they all wanted to hear
@rotesvelles Duane is a good looking guy always dressed sharp acted in the movie the savage 7 played a biker named eddie [ a girl in my class thought duane eddy and duane dobie gilis hickman were the same person?].

Incredible tune! Have the "45". Who's the drummer? Is it Hal Blaine? Produced by the GREAT Jimmy Bowen.

I love Duanne Eddy & I love the song "Freight Train", but I'm not sure that the two go together. I'd much rather listen to the Nancy Whiskey version.

Elizabeth Cotten sure did write great songs. I'm not so keen on this interpretation though.
Xtalllll 3 years ago 2
i agree with you. it kind of takes the entire effort out of the song and just adds ALOT of reverb onto the guitar.. but oh well.

I think Les Paul is credited with inventing the electric guitar, and if memory serves he did not have all his fingers to play it with
