It's amazing when you think about it. Microsoft is a genius when it comes to marketing in the US. They've managed to make this console very popular despite the fact that it's inherently flawed. Kids and adults continue to buy this piece of garbage because "all their friends game on it". Just crazy....

PS3 is much more reliable and technically sound, so it's a far better choice indeed. However, real hardcore gamers game on SLI or Crossfire based PCs.

@XboxPerson No, I never said hardcore gamers play PS3 only. I'm not a PS3 (or console) fan boy in the least bit. I'm a PC fan boy I guess, as it offers a much better experience (by far) compared to either of the consoles.

All I'm saying is that the failure rate of the 360 is laughable. I have buddies that have had multiple units fail on them, each time with the same "General Hardware Failure" error code.

I'll admit most of the software for the 360 is great, but hardware wise it's terrible.

On christmas day i got the red ring of death(1) with e74 message. Before this the screen pixalated a lot. It only starts when playing a game, so i thought it was something to do with the motherboard and dvd drive connection not the HANA chip. I was right, when i took the console apart and came to the motherboard, i lifted the dvd drive up and found a wire loose. So i put it back in completly and put the xbox 360 back together and it works fine- and still does today!

Ive just taken mine apart and found out that if you push down the heatsink pretty hard it runs fine, so buying a new clamp i think would help!

yeah if you get a silicon heat trasnfer paist and just put it between the over head cooling systems and the GPU and CPU (Do it to both) then replace the metal washers with plastic ones, put the heat transfers back on top of the processors let it run for 20 mins without the fan to allow the soldering to come back together allow 10 min break period for it to harden, then walla, well for me, it works!... put everything back together and keep on playing fellow gamer, otherwise just smash it lol...

Yea a good way to avoid your xbox being switched is to copy down that serial code (back of xbox 360) and the date that your xbox was made. If they do send you a different xbox, you can complain to them and threaten them.

my elite has 1 red light and system error E74 as well which apparently means that the scaler chip on the gpu has broken off because it takes too much heat and cant cool down, rubbish soldering. Before it did it I got little black squares all over the screen when I was playin... COD5! The new consoles with HDMI have a "better" heat sink with a copper vein that leads to another smaller one, but they still get RRoD.

I fixed my E74 by disassembling the system and overheating just the GPU for like 15 minutes.

Unplug AV cable, Place one of the two fans on top of the CPU heatsink to cool it, turn on the system, it will auto shut off every 5 mins or so, just turn it back on. This is essentially just doing the towel trick, but it is much easier on the internals.
