The drumroll in the beginning of the film kind of reminded me of the drumroll from the Octopus film & some of the organ music in this film, but then the cloud was creepy looking and that sun "HI OAK TREE REMEMBER YOU COULDN'T HAVE GROWN WITHOUT ME" YIKES OOOOOO I freaked out at this skit & the sun looked creepy too. This just like the Octopus film is the reason I liked the Electric Company & 321 Contact better. I of course had to sit through SS & Mr Rogers to get to these 2 shows.
Love this skit, but as a kid I was TERRIFIED of Guy Smiley....even had nightmares about him, lol!! He still sort of creeps me out, but God I love all these old Sesame Street clips!! It's like being 5 again!! :)
As an adult, I think this is a cute, funny segment. As a kid, it always creeped me out. While I liked learned where oak trees come from, the deep, odd voice on the oak tree, the booming, breathy voice of the rain cloud, and the maniacal, squinting look on the sun's face really weirded me out. I always worried that Guy Smiley would get poison ivy from those branches that LOOKED like poison oak.
Oh, my GOD. I've been looking for this scene for YEARS! As soon as I saw "Treebeard" in the Lord of the Rings, I KNEW that he reminded me of someone -- the tree in THIS skit!
This is why I could never take Treebeard seriously!
Now Sesame Street would have some sort of ecological "green movement" message instead of being realistic and practical when describing the use of a tree.
omg! GRANNY FANNY NESTLeRoAD! She does exist!! For yeas now I had this name stuck in my head...I even called my grandma, granny fanny sometimes up until the day she died last yea.
This segment always gets to me. I always get extremely emotional; especially when the tree is reunited with his 'friends' the table and chair and he keeps saying 'This is so unbelievable.'
Plus Guy Smiley's deep sincerity to the whole thing. All of it adds up to a touching sketch.
Really?!!!? This scares the shit out of me...I totally remember this when I was a kid. The table and chair were basically killed and now reunited with his friend. The sun/clouds look freaky.
Anyone remember the character that looked like Guy Smiley that played the piano and played the theme song and messed up and then hit his head on the piano? Please let me know! I've been trying to figure this out for years.
I remember a lot of Sesame Street skits that go as far back to 1974-1975 when I was three and four years old and it is one that brings back a lot of memories. The only thing that freaked me out about this video was the Cloud's face and the way it talked as well as the sun's face which looked a little scary and voice. Talk about creepy!
I remember this from childhood too. Its funny that it takes me 20 minutes to remember what I had for breakfast this morning but I see the clouds face and its like Im seeing my long lost brother I haven't seen for fifteen to twenty years but recognize right away. He scared (and kinda still scares) me too, dont tell anybody though or they could use it against me.
Wow, it's pretty rare to see Jim Henson voice female characters (he voiced Granny in this one). He didn't seem to do female voices as often as Frank Oz, Jerry Nelson and Richard Hunt did.
if you can find on youtube the addition game a female contestant towards the end is first voiced by frank oz but ended up voiced by jim when he said oh my goodness
I am loving this so much... I am opening old files in my brain that have been closed for nearly 30 years.... Thank you so much for the wonderful memories... Why did they change Sesame Street???????
Lots of reasons. Jim Henson's early death. Elmo taking center stage. and let's face it.. a lot of these old sesame street skits were either based on older pop culture or they were just plain creepy. (take a look at the Sesame Street News involving Humpty Dumpty or The Disco Frog or Casey Jones with Cookie Monster)
