It's great that you follow your beliefs every day, but some people need to be reminded why their beliefs are important, and others like to celebrate their beliefs with people who share them, and you can't do that every day. Delegating a specific day to a belief isn't making all other days against that belief, it's just a way to let people celebrate it. All the same I do agree that events like birthdays which don't involve beliefs are over-rated...
i agree with this. im the same way. i try to live the same way. a day at a time, and celebrate each day & appreciate each day. instead of only "worshiping" once a week on a specific day,i try to worship at every day and to enjoy & appreciate the life i am given.
i feel like alot of people are lost on the God factor when it comes to this, as if they compare living a "holy" or just life to religion or God, whether you have faith or not, we should all strive to be better human beings. period.
@swiftkaratechop I so agree! I know too many people that believe they cannot be better people because they lack faith in something greater. I believe people like that lack faith in themselfs as well, and thats why they act the way they do.
“There are only two ways to live your life. One is as though nothing is a miracle. The other is as though everything is a miracle.” ...right? XD
In my opinion Holidays are reminiscent of old time dogma. I celebrate birthdays by saying "Happy Welcome to Earth Day" because Im happy so and so, came here on that day, and I love them.
I agree with you Tay, keep up the truth communications brother...
From the rhythm of our breath to the alternations of a day, to the seasons of our lives. Connection is preserved by the salting of our devotion in rhythm.Without rhythm and time all the notes of our song would be played as one note.As the planet spirals around the bar of the sun so does the song spiral around its central meaning.
Interesting opinion, to say the least. But simply put, Birthdays, are merely a celebration of the Day someone was born, hence "Birth" Day. Holidays, in fact, come from the Old English words for Holy and Day, but maybe not so much to make one day more Holy than any other, but again to recognize a particular event in our history that helped to define our nation. I, personally, am glad we have the Holy Days because they seem to remind us that life isn't all about ourselves, and is a time for family
adam or tay what happened you started talking about your fear and your belifs next your gonna start talking about which murder cases you like most whats wrong ?
Why is his voice so fuckin' deep?He looks like a lil' bitch. He should have a girlie voice.I think his voice is souped up some kind of way. This can't be.
No one "believes in" holidays they believe in the attachment to the holiday, like Christmas, we don't believe in Christmas we believe in the religion we do "celebrate" Christmas but we don't believe in it, it's the same for every holiday. at least that's what I think.
It's not that you don't believe in what they celebrate during the rest of the year, but it's much more convenient for reminding people that forget about it, and helps celebrate it more effectively. For instance, you can be patriotic all year, but we still celebrate it every July 4th because you want to show your patriotism and encourage others to be patriotic too, but shooting fireworks at random times throughout the year would be a bad idea and not grasp people much.
I would easily put it that there is only a special day in any regard because of commercialism. The day is only so that artisians can push their goods more effectively on people. Birthdays probably developed out of admiration for heirarchy then eventually passed to all other individuals out of jealously, self esteem or good nature to each other. To shower with gifts would do well. The actual calender days for a religion still doesn't quite make sense. As you said it is a constant, why change?
Holidays used to mean "Holy Day" only for special religious days, but now it means special day of rest or relaxation you relax and in normal circumstances, enjoy the day depending on what it is.
I don't believe in the commercialisation of a Christian festival (Christmas) and I never ask for much at Christmas, but I would give gifts to people. Your birthday is an important day too, shows people care you were born or its a time to reflect on all your experiences you've gained since you were born
The holidays are a time to relax and let loose. I myself worship Chocolate rain, we eat chocolate and move away from the mic to breath. It's a GREAT religion my lord. ;)
WHY DO PPL NEED ANSWERS its a few days out of the year when ppl should try to be normal and just hang eat sleep and drink with there familys and try to be nice to enjoy the last lil memorys here on earth while it lasts try to pretend like theres some hope left
That's good for you, but for most people it is hard to be on top of your game ALL the time, that's why you set yourself one day where you make sure to work on something extra, it's the same thing as going to the gym, it's great if you can motivate yourself to go to the gym ALL THE TIME, but the reality is most people don't for whatever reason, and until they become enlightened it helps to have at least ONE set day a week to act in a certain way (less you burn in the eternal fires of hell)
I really like these videos from you where you just sit back and talk. Where you share about yourself, your thoughts, and perspective. You've got so much to say and a wealth of insights - thanks for sharing!
I don't believe that it's so much as apologizing for an "unholy" life or anything of the sort. On the contrary, it's also a time to build a memory -- a time to do something for yourself or with others that you aren't able to do every single day. Some holidays like Earth Day should be something that is celebrated daily, but then you have conventions or other small moments that are just your time to break away from the average. It's not completely about belief or faith per se. Not completely.
Generic is fine but humankind wants, loves, needs, a reason to celebrate something. I think it's built in us. Only those who seem to consciously decide to NOT to celebrate are just trying to set themselves apart. Notice how most people love Friday afternoons & scream TGIF! while jumping up and down? It's my opinion that life to most is pretty boring if they don't have something religious or celebratory to look forward to. : )
Very well put. Keep up the great work! I do agree that people who hold some sort of purpose in life should stick with it, rather than just participating occasionally in order to comfort their conscience.
so what i gather from this is that everyday should be a holy day. thats pretty great. that is a great way to live life. i have always said live everyday like you last one and i kinda think the two click in an odd way. i like your perspective on it:)
I look at holidays, birthdays, anniversaries, etc as simply an opportunity/good excuse to actively express the emotions that you do have all the time. In the case of religious holidays its more of a time to refocus and remember whatever it is that the particular holiday is about. Sure these things can be done everyday, but then its just normal and you wouldnt have any specialness to it. As for having it all on one day, to me that's just for convenience sake.
Tay, some of the things like birthdays and anniversaries aren't about being holy. They are more about honoring a memory, a person, or a day. Take July 4th for the US. It's about honoring and remembering our turning point of independence. I wouldn't say there is anything holy. It's simply just honoring something. It's not like XXXmas or Easter which were set aside as supposed "holy" days. Where you have to be good and do the right things specifically at those times.
@Tayvox, I agree with you that many people use Sabbaths in particular in a "one day of being good" kind of day, and that is wrong. I appreciate holidays such as Easter, Thanksgiving, and Christmas because they serve as good reminders for me to be a better person. While I agree that maintaining your values in daily life is an excellent goal, and something that I strive for in my own life, as a human I understand that I am imperfect. But that's why there is repentance and redemption.
While I very much see your side, I also see big holidays as a time to remember or celebrate together in a world in which family and friends are often trapped under economic pressures. So while several do use them as "Okay, I'll be a good person because it's Christmas," my first thought is "Yay, I'll get to see family!" Although I admit your points are valid = ]
If I would be better in english and would know you, i would have really like to have a good conversation with you about everything! You look like someone really interesting!
That is a brilliant explanation for what holidays and 'Special Days' are- But if we made every day like a holiday- Wouldn't it get boring after a while?
I'm sorry but..are you smoking something? and also, birthdays are celebrated to celebrate the fact that one was born,it's not a religious thing therefore is not an excuse that we live an unholy life and we need this day to be holy. Birthdays are not holy.Besides think about it,if nobody cared about b-days maybe we would even forget the day or year of our b-day. We wouldn't know how old we are lol. But this is just my oppinion. :)
hollidays and stuff like that are usualy to celebrate something old, or like most people today its a time to have a bit of joy and to relaxe, birthays exists because we want to celebrate that we are one year older, that you have lived trough yet another year of your life, the only thing i dont understand about hollidays is that your not allowed to work on special hollidays like easter, i really dont see the point of that, you cant buy food or anything for a small period of time!
@ehop22 That doesn't really make it a double standard. That's being open minded to other peoples beliefs. It would be rude to not go to someones birthday because you don't believe in them.

You should inhale helium! Or maybe inhale sulfur hexaflouride, it makes your voice even deeper!

Very well explained, but do you not celebrate these holy days or holidays because of their seemingly counter-intuitive concept?

@VELOCIRAPTOR247 I partake in some such festivities. Understanding is not a prerequisite for action.

you dont celebrate yours but you go to other peoples? sounds like a double standard to me. Lol but to each their own
ehop22 2 months ago
@ehop22 That doesn't really make it a double standard. That's being open minded to other peoples beliefs. It would be rude to not go to someones birthday because you don't believe in them.
