@ShakeYourCarBass that's just one of jaco's signature basslines. if you listen to his early tapes you can hear how he slowly started using that lick. it's cool to hear how he got ideas that he used later on in his life from when he was 19 years old.

I've watched a lot of Pastorius videos now and I just don't see it. No groove, just fast widdly-widdly stuff and the overuse of harmonics. Like every bass virtuoso.
The interviewer is a better bass player. He demonstrates groove. I'm guessing only a tiny proportion of Pastorius devotees can dance.
@bjove Yep, that's more like it. More musical, less self-indulgent, it grooves, it has soul and is technical enough to appeal to those who rate technique above other skills (I realise many do). I could listen to stuff like that all day long. Thanks.
@Fungoloify No. You don't see it b/c this is close to the end of Jaco's short life. He was the SHIT, no kidding. But you are now seeing a guy who was suffering from Bi-Polar Shizophrenia and alcohol/drug abuse. He couldn't get a gig! That's why you don't see it-- he was one of those shining stars that burns to brightly too fast and dies. His old friend & bassist, Jerry Jemmott who interviews him here must have felt it. No question.
@Fungoloify no offense but are you really that stupid? can you not see the genius 16th note grooves and genius fills? it doesn't have to be slow to have groove, look at tower of power.
That is a LOT of time and tenacity right there ! Puts my 15 mins practice a day in the "try much much harder you slacker " category !!! .... what an inspiring and amazing guy.
...arguing over 'who is better than who' is as ridiculous as arguing over what the best plate of food is. Fact of the matter - its subjective. Always has been, always will be. Technique never equates creativity.
Allmusic and the like will often voice their know it all pretentious opinions but it NEVER takes away from the fact that the human race is unique and we like what we like regardless of the "experts" opinions.
I hate when people comment on a video that someother guy is better. And when someone is doing that on a Jaco Pastorius video like this, i just dont know what to say. He could play absolutely anything.
This all comes from an instructional VHS (then DVD) "Jaco Pastorius: Modern Electric Bass" which was filmed in the mid 80's just before his death. The lesson book came with the video which was the written music (no tabs) for each exercise referenced in the video. You can probably find it on amazon or ebay, if you're a bassist or into Jaco or jazz it's pretty interesting to watch/play along with or use as a practice tool which is pretty neat.

WOW!!! I listened to him years ago without realizing the amazing STAND-OUT talent he possessed. Truly one-of-a-kind...
I love his show of talent here, such as at 3:46 where he just seems to want to show what can be done. I think he knows he's past his time, but just wants to pass it on. RIP, Jaco. You should have had sooooooooo much more time...

Pete Wentz cannot play bass, its a crime against all that is good that his name is even MENTIONED in this comment thread. Jaco's favorite breakfast food was bacon, eggs, and a slice of Pete Wentz
It's because he is a "Doer" not a "Teacher." As the old saying goes, "Those who can, do; those who cannot, teach." I say that in jest, but sometimes, it's very true...which is how old sayings, become "old sayings" in the first place. ;)

then why has he been on the cover of bass player magazine like a hundred times?
cygnuxman 2 years ago
because he's popular. mark hoppus has been on the cover of bass player magazine.
TEgnoto89 2 years ago
not really. geddy is pretty under the radar in comparison to other popular musicians.

Popularity doesn't equate to talent.

He sure is, any bass player impresses me, as long as they can play in the pocket and hold a groove.

That's not Jaco then, his arrogance is legendary (Can't blame him though.)

bassplayer142,
I don't think so... this was filmed when Jaco was on his way down. The producers kept him in a hotel for three days before filming to ensure he wasn't drinking or doing drugs. RIP Jaco, he was a genius.
