I said the exact same thing on an Italian RPG Forum recently ("exploit the uniqueness of the Roleplaying Medium" as opposed to "copy other mediums into Roleplaying") and found myself practically slaughtered by the local Forgite community.
Luckily, there's someone out there with a little more authority than me who thinks in a similar manner.
There's got to be dilemmas to drive the PCs on every game, although not so frequently. Maybe one that drags for a few story arches, and a few others in between.

So did Schmiddy die protecting Nick? (As you mentioned Nick survived) Or did the prophecy turn out to be false?
In my games I've tried to make any prophecy true..but only for a given value of "true" like the old "If you go to Zaha Dun you will die" classic.

Cool episode.
Dilemmas. I think they're essential.
