Hoisin is an approximate spelling of the Cantonese word for "seafood." It was once a suace for seafood. Ngieen got the general idea right. It is totally NOT Thai. Neither is peanut butter (hardly ever used in Thailand)... Neither is the sweetness we associate with Thai food in the US.

what hoisen soauce has to do with Thai? its Chinese! and it has nothing to do with sesame seeds! it is made out fermented soybeans with the additional ingredients such of garlic, vinegar, and chili peppers.
