I don't know about embarrassing. I would stand to say more or less grossly misled. Thousand of years of human society based on a lie and fear.... Maybe in time intelligence and wisdom will win out. Maybe when we throw out religion and start anew.
He obviously has no concept of psychological development... comparing a 2 year old not being able to comprehend a 15 year old. *facepalm*. Eventually the 2 year old WILL be a 15 year old and understand it all. What a TERRIBLE analogy. Let alone the egocentrism of children doesn't allow them to do that.
I'm on your side this guy I awful. However, the 2 year old analogy probably does hold. If there were a god we'd have no way of knowing what it'd be like it be her - we'd also have something akin to the egocentric differences between a 2 and a 15 y/o except vastly exaggerated (I guess).
Wolpe is a great speaker, but his whole argument is undermined by the fact that faith is required.
Faith-based rhetoric will always fail in the eyes of those of us who see any position based in, or reliant on, blind faith and/or the personally anecdotal as invalid.
"do you share that intuition that there is something...."
stupid rhetorical questions, it's called wishfull thinking. Wolpe is only justifying god by the thought of having less responsibility for your own life and actions.
this is quite true and what i believe to be a dangerous element in religion. Accountability is dallied about to either god, it's son/ofspring what have you,or to forgiveness by muttering to one's self.this is why the criminal population is misled with religion as opposed to pursuing a productive vocation. this dogmatic nonsense teaches these individuals that a simple asking for forgiveness will allow them to still make it to heaven whilst continuing to commit crime.a fatuously perpetual cycle
Yeah Wolpe because competition has worked out really well with religion...is this guy on f'''n crack? How many religious wars have there been, even now? Like Muslims are really interested in the 'cross pollination' of ideas... i've seen up'teen hundred of these debates with hitch or others and still I wait for a serious logical thought that I can say yep that was interesting. Anyone who listens to this has to conclude either all religious clergy are terrible orators or its all rubbish..
I have also seen dozens of these debates on god and religion and I have to say I actually have seen some points which were serious and logical, and very interesting. The issue is however, those points never support the idea that god is real, or that religious ideas are true.
This is because the fact of the matter is that there is NO supernatural 'realm' or force(s). Things which are metaphysical are simply ideas, and have no effect on anything in the actual-physical world, outside of thought.
... I don't want people to think, by that, that I mean anything metaphysical can interject into people's thoughts to cause them to commit to certain actions, as in a 'divine revelation.'
There is no support for anything metaphysical, only the physical universe. If the 'metaphysical realm' was real, and truely existed, you would see some sort of effects of this, like ghosts manipulating things in the physical world.
The truth is, it doesn't happen... because it is simply not real.
Wolpe would not be able to "own" Hitchens, or any other non-believer for that matter, however hard he tries.
Hitchens could have showed up and just sat there, and he would still have 'won' the debate for the simple reason that he doesn't affirm the supernatural.
Now Hitchens is Bald and getting poison pumped into him. The irony... Long live the Hitch!!!

For a man so clearly intelligent, Wolpe falls into every logical fallacy going. Quite extraordinary. Hitch (as usual) wipes the floor with him.

So, Rabbi, why did god give you cancer again ? Part of his divine plan? A test of your beliefs? Please help me out. I need to know !!!!

@WhiteLakeDan
I think he would say that a perfect world would be one not worth living in. So thats sort of devine plan and sort of God testing him.

So Wolpe got cancer...therefore god exists?

So what Wolpe's saying is that it's all about private experience with a personal deity - so what exactly is religion for, again?
Oh right, so he doesn't have to get a real job!

wolpe pissed on his own feet when he said "all of this is possible because religion is not in the government"

I agree that it's a good analogy but I don't think it's a good one for explaining the difference between a teenager and a loving god.
15 year olds aren't responsible for the creation and maintenance of everything the 2 year old knows. AND 15 year olds are visible.
I think it's a good analogy to use in a conversation with a know-it-all teenager disbelieving the well-intended advice of an adult or parent.

Wolpe is kind of owning Hitchens. Hitchens put up a bunch of straw men and started counting bodies, and got slapped for those sloppy techniques.
His rhetoric and intelligence usually carries him through but not this time.
Hitchens is still right, of course...

I disagree, and I agree.
Wolpe is owning himself, and Hitchens is owning Wolpe.
