I just took that same model record changer out of a 1938 RCA radio. It wasn't original because the model was only available with a player and not a changer.
Those Philcos are a pig to work on. Bandersontv just did a video on his and showed what was involved in getting the board out of the chassis. Nightmare city.
Never seen a Zenith like that before--perhaps a retrofit from a Victrola?
That Philco would be great to have, but this one had parts missing and they wanted $500 for it. I saw no need to pay $500 for aggravation, I get enough of that for free. Yep the Zenith is some kind of retrofit. I thought the door modification for the knobs was interesting.
Friend, If you're ever in search of schematics for these old radios, contact us at Top TV and Appliance in Cleveland Ohio. We've been in business since 1949 and the owner here has Sam's Photofacts that go back to the numbers in the 100's. We also have crates of new & used tubes as well.
Thanks, I am thinking about videoing the next Ham Fest I go to. There usually is a large variety of equipment, new and old. I am interested in component parts, mostly.
You know I think I have to disagree that that is an original Zenith design. It looks to me to be an even older console record player that has had a radio installed. The radio looks to be a late 40's table model design while the cabinet looks like a late 20's early 30 crank record player. I could be wrong though. Does it have the original back or a model number?
It many not be a Zenith cabinet, I would have thought the Zenith emblem should be on the front. I mentioned that the knobs are original Zenith not the cabinet. However if it is or not they did a good job of fitting the radio into the cabinet. Could not get to the back. When Chuck gets into it he will know if it is all Zenith, but he really does not care, he just likes it. Thanks
Wish the chassis had a tag. Yes those knobs do look like Grigsby/Grunow Majestic design. And the speaker does look original the best I could see. If I would have been interested in it we would have taken a much closer look.
I should have put all my money into vacuum tubes. They have really increased in price.
Well the problem is storage. I have a Celestron Telescope that has been loaned out for at least six years because if I get it back I don't know here I will store it.
Yes they are fun. You just never know what you might find. And it is fun looking at all the other stuff too. Sometimes finding unusual items, like what is a cheese straightener?
I was curious about some of the prices they were selling or, especially the Philco TV. I've seen those sell for over 300$ in poor condition, and over 700$ restored - for a black and white TV! I also was curious aobut how much the Magnavox console was going for. IF that Zenith was less than 100$, I think is was a good deal. Did it work, or did it smoke? Looking forward to the next installment.
@weightfeather1
Yes, someone put it together. But they did a reasonably good job. But not really collectable.

The turntable in the Zenith is a Webcor from around 1950. I have one like it that has a 33 rpm speed.

The knobs on the unknown radio look like the ones on my Grigsby/Grunow Majestic.
I might have the 6DQ6 for that old Philco :)

Rick,
You should have gone for that TV. No guts - no glory...and it's only money.

John

Did not ask the price on the Magnavox. The Philco TV was marked $495. And Chuck did good $65 on the Zenith.
